While I can say that Tortoise have done some work that is definitely better than say, Godspeed You Black Emperor, I still don't take much notice of them.

Allow me focus my discussion on their "song", "Ry Cooder" from their debut album. They thought his name was funny because it sounds like "wry cooter" & not many people that might buy their records even know who blues guitarist Ry Cooder is &, you see, Tortoise are most likely stoners who are really too stupid to be smoking pot. They had some tape lying around of them walking through the house on the hardwood floors & drinking beers & smoking bowls or whatnot & just named the seven minutes of banality "Ry Cooder" because they thought that would be so fucking cute & cool, provide some dynamic to the record, & also function as filler material as a bonus.

The truth of the matter is these people are just insanely (insanely because they are not even conscious of their envy) jealous because they will never in a million years have the patience, intelligence or skill to learn to play like the actual Ry Cooder, so they mock him. Before Mick Taylor supported The Stones, it was Ry Cooder that played on Let It Bleed. Ry Cooder masterfully plays the slide guitar on "Sister Morphine" on Sticky Fingers. Ry Cooder played with The Magic Band. He is perhaps best known for his work on the Crossroads & Paris, Texas soundtracks. Tortoise, since their music is airy, would love to be on movie soundtracks like Ry Cooder, but they know that they never will & blame it on society. Maybe one day they'll record themselves taking a shit while someone meanders on a piano & call it "Nicky Hopkins."

Alex's Trip 08.26.2006 09:16 PM

When someone mentioned that name to me, I said "Who's cooter?" I didn't know who he is. I still have never listened to him.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 09:54 PM

Is it that you just can't decide which of my "assumptions" to try & dismantle first?

er...

...because you are compelled to do it out of dislike for me even though you yourself strongly averred that Tortoise weren't "all that"

you just seemed to jumping to a lot of wild conclusions solely from the title of a song. plus, at least two of tortoise are highly accomplished musicians as far as technique goes. i think that track (djed) is good, i just don't it is unparalleled.

anyway, you don't inpsire anything as strong as dislike from me atari, you just make yourself a very easy and deserving target for mockery.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 10:28 PM

p;',pkp]k

how do you know how I came to write my statements?

It seems that it is you that is making the assumptions.

Toilet & Bowels 08.26.2006 10:37 PM

i'll take it back if you can site a quote from the band that forms the basis for each assertion you make about them.

and i reckon it's far more likely to be the case that they would title the song ry cooder out of respect rather than scorn.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 10:41 PM

well, one would assume that to be the case if they have never listened to the "song" because the "song" is just some recording of basically nothing, so it's not "far more likely"...not at all.

It's certainly no homage to Ry Cooder considering his work.

It's no John Cage. It no John & Yoko "Two Minutes Silence" even. It's no "John & Yoko" (the song) which is like 20 minutes of them saying each other's names back & forth in every inflection (which gets really tripped out after awhile too).

What it is

is just what I described earlier.

what the hell does it even matter. talent does NOT (told you i would say it again) warrant any goodness, at least in any given persons opinion. i do know who Ry Cooder is, and i really don't care all that much. i don't like much blues and i really hate the sound of a slide gtr. what are you bitching about so much, quit jumping to such inane conclusions and enjoy whatever music you wanna. if you don't like tortoise, whatever, what does it matter.

"ohh haha Tortoise will not ever play on a soundtrack and Ry Cooder did! hah! they must really suck!"
that was me, paraphrasing you...

do you like SY? yes. do you like John cage? probably. both of those bands/musicians have recordings of nothing, literally. did you get upset about there use of the words and numbers "4" 33'" and "(silence)"? did you read those and think "oh no! now i can't say those words without keeping my credibility as a music snob!"

sorry to be a dick, but get over it man.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 10:49 PM

You get over being a fucking dick. Read my fucking post you illiterate fool.

atari 2600 08.26.2006 10:50 PM

atari 2600 08.26.2006 10:56 PM

go fuck a duck & blaze some krack

k-krack 08.26.2006 10:56 PM

k-krack 08.26.2006 10:57 PM

atari 2600 08.26.2006 11:03 PM

If you were folowing me at all (you weren't...you have average intelligence at best) then you would have not been such a dick.

period

Toilet & Bowels 08.26.2006 11:08 PM

incase anyone is wondering, this "recording of basically nothing" sounds just like a tortoise song.

someone needs a nap.

k-krack 08.26.2006 11:28 PM

oh yeah, back on about tortoise, clearly there is no talent in that band. everyone knows how incredibly easy it is to play a vibraphone and melodic basslines. what a bunch of talentless goofs!

Daycare Nation 08.26.2006 11:31 PM
