Question about EVOL LP

hey guys, i have a quick question about a copy of EVOL which i just got on vinyl.

It is BFFP4, but it is red vinyl and there is NO locked groove on expressway to yr skull, which goes against what is said here http://sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/lp4.html

also, the vinyl was still in shrink wrap which i found odd for a record that has been out of print for forever...

anyways, i was just wondering if this is possibly a scam ebay seller who presses his own rare vinyls and sells them, and if you guys think its possible i could get a few bucks back from him...because if this is fake, its not worth what i paid for it.

noisereductions 08.19.2009 07:03 AM

hmmm. Interesting. I wonder if it's a recent Blast First repress that no one knew about. But why no lockgroove I wonder?

nicfit 08.19.2009 07:06 AM

are there etchings on the sides?

noisereductions 08.19.2009 08:21 AM

another thing; does it indicate ANYWHERE a country of origin? IE: Where was it pressed?

radarmaker 08.19.2009 01:02 PM

Got pics? I'd love to see it.

Do you have an original BF copy to compare it to? I've picked up (presumably) bootleg copies of Goo on clear red & marbled blue vinyl over the past year, and the sleeve & label quality is noticeably inferior to an original when compared side-by-side.

And yeah, post the matrix code exactly as they're printed/written - if it's genuine, they should match up with existing BF copies, unless entirely new masters have been made. I'd strongly suspect it's a boot though (albeit a pretty cool one :) )

Oh, and what about the inner sleeve? Printed on shimmery paper like the originals, or just a plain white sleeve?

radarmaker 08.19.2009 01:04 PM

oh, and who was the eBay seller? PM me if you don't want to make it public, but I can prob tell you if it's the same person as either of my coloured boots.

eternal 08.19.2009 04:25 PM

the seller is heyzeus-chreenst and his store is the CO-OP DUDE.

EVERYTHING is identical to what is posted in the first 6 pictures here: http://sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/lp4.html

i dont have an original EVOL on black, so i cant compare but everything looks identical except that it's red and no locked groove, no listing of a country except that Blast First logo on the back cover that says London underneath it. the insert is on glossy, thick paper like most records.

etched arounnd the label on the vinyl is BFFP 4 A/B in like a handwriting sort of font.

thanks in advance for any help. if it is a bootleg, any suggestions if i can/should take any action?

Rob Instigator 08.19.2009 04:55 PM

you should instantly snail mail that shit over to rob instigator.

radarmaker 08.19.2009 06:12 PM

The full matrix code my Blast First original reads:

Side 1 (machine stamped): BFFP-4 A-2U-I-
with "A Porky Prime Cut" hand-scratched below it.

Side 2 (machine stamped): BFFP-4 B-2U-I- with EVERYTHING TURNS BLACK TO BLUE hand-scratched and "BILBO TAPE DIR" hand-scratched in smaller lettering further around.

I don't know that seller, but I'd certainly lean towards yours being a boot (as I would with just about any previously undocumented coloured LPs that show up out of the blue, given the avalanche of similar boots for other artists that's appeared over the past few years). Doubt this'll be the last SY one either.

You can try asking the seller for a partial refund, but I wouldn't get your hopes up - if this is the one you bought, it did say "reissue" in the description, and $30 isn't too bad a price - I paid almost $80 for the blue marbled Goo when that first appeared :/
I'd offer to buy yours if I was a little more flush, but can't really justify it right now I'm afraid..

radarmaker 08.19.2009 06:22 PM

Oh, and the fact that there's a white inner sleeve & separate printed insert is another giveaway - on original copies, the inner sleeve itself has the printed design that's on your insert.

noisereductions 08.19.2009 06:26 PM

boot or not. That shit is hot.

radarmaker 08.19.2009 06:28 PM

Damn straight :)

eternal 08.19.2009 08:23 PM

oh ok, i didnt know that the original innersleeve had the lyrics and stuff on it, i thought it was just a side insert (like on a thousand leaves?)

rossboss 08.20.2009 07:59 AM

I wonder if this is from the same 'batch' ?

radarmaker 08.20.2009 12:59 PM

Almost certainly. I don't think any Blast First stuff was officially pressed on coloured vinyl.

eternal 08.20.2009 03:18 PM

i messaged the seller, he offered an $11 refund. so i basically got this sweet looking copy of EVOL (that sounds great and is in mint condition) for only 15 bucks. To say i'm pretty happy about it is an understatement

there were some pink pressings i think
or maybe those werent sst?

scott v 08.20.2009 03:22 PM

I'd say its definitely a reissue and not a bootleg...

I believe SST initially pressed some pink/white swirled versions, then the std black... but all of the original SST LPs have the locked groove Expressway...

They were SST, same as the purple Sister (both of those were limited reissues from around 1990, I believe)

Based on what?
The non-matching matrix & plain inner sleeve with printed insert is the same deal as with my bootleg Goo, there's no mention of a reissue on Mute's Blast First site, and coloured vinyl bootlegs by all kinds of artists have been appearing over the past few years.
I'd bet good money that the print quality of the sleeve & label will be inferior to that of original copies too.

It was just a hunch but you have more info, based on what i you just stated i'd now agree about it being a boot, interesting that someone or some company would go through the effort with recreating a version with colored vinyl... but maybe not that much of a big deal. I'd wonder what the fidelity is like also...

xfoliate 10.17.2009 04:11 AM

I can tell you guys that all the colored vinyl on SST (At least for Sonic Youth) were reprints. SST reprinted a BUNCH of albums on colored vinyl in the early 90's I think? This part I'm assuming but I would imagine that any albums that came out around that time would be first pressings on colored vinyl? I dunno. But The Sonic Youth stuff were pressed in the mid to late 80's and all first pressed on black vinyl. The way you can tell is that the first printings had NO barcode on the back while all the colored vinyl editions had barcodes on the back. That goes for all of those SST reprints. They're ALL still ridiculously rare though. Seems like they're more rare than the first pressings or collectors don't give those up as readily.

From all I've seen there's only a Pink Marbled edition of EVOL and a Purple Marbled edition of Sister. I've seen other bands like the Screaming Trees have multiple colors on SST but in all my years looking I've never seen any variation on those Sonic Youth SST records.

Hope that experience helps the hunt for everyone.

DanielCarlson 10.17.2009 06:05 AM

I've found a blue/grey vinyl, what's up with that edition? It's a reissue as well then I assume?

greenlight 10.17.2009 07:30 AM

For and SY fan looking for locked groove records, THE essential purchase is Lee Ranaldo's first solo album, From Here to Infinity. A whole album of the most completely lush locked grooves, on clear vinyl with this great Savage Pencil etching. Issued by Blast First. It's reasonably possible to still find I think. So so good.

thanks! will search for it! (have it on cd, but yeah, vinyl with this kinda artwork and locked groove would be so deadly in my tiny collection)

SonicBebs 10.17.2009 01:39 PM

Yup.
As well as the pink EVOL & purple Sister, SST also pressed the Starpower 10" on at least grey, purple, yellow & brown. The yellow & brown ones hardly ever turn up though.

All the "Blast First" coloured copies are boots though.

musefreek 10.18.2009 10:57 AM

what about this one? do you think it's the real deal or a fake?

Looks OK to me. Not worth the asking price though.

krischanski 11.17.2009 04:27 AM

I got one greenish grey marbled copy of Evol LP on eBay. And one Goo in the same color.

hirsute_biped 11.18.2009 12:07 PM

i jut saw a new copy of EVOL in a local shop for $29.99 yesterday, on Blast First. I think an "import" sticker was on there, and the shrink wrap was loose, though still sealed. I'm guessing boot. In any case, the cover was nicely printed, not totally obvious bootleg cheap-ass printing. Not sure on the details of the disc though... I refrained from purchasing as I got the SST edition at home. I've been seeing EVOL turn up in shops a fair amount recently actually
