Last night was not a concert. It was a nice curse. Sonic Youth in La Molina, Lima, Peru for the first time. And last. It was an eventful and fateful evening that seems to warn about the end of one of the most important bands that rock has been light in its history. This small South American tour could be, really, the agony of the group that taught us that music will never run out of repetitions and the sonic youth, their youth, can last even against chronological logic (excuse the ugly rhyme).

VIOLENCE AND REVOLT
That the band's classic boot with Tom Violence and was a sincere confession. The peace would not prevail . And least some signs of carelessness of some organizers who did not measure the magnitude of what was to come: a crowd of ecstatic fans overwhelmed and under the power of noise and energy. Neither well into the second theme, the grand -Schizophrenia , everything had to stop at the request of the vocalist and bassist Kim Gordon , who did well in calling for calm to avoid any unfortunate outcome. A single fence, very light, separating the audience from the stage. And only three members of security that could not with the onslaught of a hundred young (in age or spirit) delusional.

Runs revolutions, everything went as it should be. "The power of pogo" , stuck to that the other leader, Thurston Moore . But the madness continued, a hit here, down there, some flattened . All injected with distortion. Sacred Trickster and Calming the Snake , both songs from their latest album, deafened and sweetened. But at another classic, The Sprawl , begin the 'show' of Moore.

THURSTON AGAINST THE WORLD
Another problem of organization (or technician, I know), I blew the speaker and the patience to fifties artist. The smile that started left. Annoyed, he threw the guitar and disappeared from the stage. All these concerts as cursed, culminating abruptly. Kim, again, putting out fires, and passing the microphone to the audience to "ask questions". And Lee Ranaldo going to the dressing room to convince Thurston to return.

Moore returned 10 minutes later. And apologies for the incident came with a vengeance. It was he and his guitar, which later took what seemed doomed to misfortune. Possessed of there until the end of the concert, he faced all (I stole the phrase from a friend) as if you lived a second youth .

And is that the quarrels in the band are evident . And much more those of Moore and Kim Gordon, his former wife now, who gave back almost all the time and only turned to him with disapproval by his 'excesses'. Thurston overshadowed his colleagues with his usual gadgets with the guitar, to the overflow of fans. And also caused problems when he almost throws the mass of people and when they climbed on top of two speakers that amplified his natural height. Neither the security guards could stop him in his delirium.

FINAL AND FAREWELL
So between that tense but fascinating environment, were succeeding Stereo Sanctity , Sugar Kane , the deadliest ever Death Valley '69 -here the legs only resisted by the grace of adrenaline-and, after a first encore ( back on stage), Drunken Butterfly , with Kim, sensual as ever, flapping his wings and clothing , and the frantic 100%.

The final closure after a second encore, could not be more ideal than with Teenage Riot , the classic that everyone wanted to hear . The bodies together, jumping and chanting. I do not know what happened in the back of the room, but the 100 or 200 that we agree on, at the feet of idols, we lived like a sonic apocalypse, an extension of five minutes of sound, and a memorable guitar crossing between Thurston and Lee.

It was a concert that smells definitive end . The incidents, Moore's outbursts, the tension of Kim, who left before completing the last song-and the momentary loss of control of the public, added that aroma of banned performance, end in advance. From here, the band will go through Chile and Brazil. After that nobody knows what will happen. What we saw, heard and night sweats may be one of the last appearances on the scene of a group, it seems, no longer works for more. And he had the spirit of wild and violent death of a band that will stay young forever. Unmatched.

thank you l'voyeur and sergi for the post, which is, yeah, informative and upsetting. Everybody on the board oughtta read it, funny translation and all. The mood here sure seems to have gone to hell. An angry kind of mourning, I suppose, but geez. Maybe Sonic Youth will go with a bang, not a whimper.

hirsute_biped 11.15.2011 09:08 PM

here is a video of part of the scene described above. seems kinda chaotic, hard to tell what happened before. Lee and Mark seem jovial enough, but maybe thats just a permanent condition. Kinda awkward.

The peru21 review is great...I like it...but Thurston don't threw their guitar...I was in first row at that moment...(later I ended in 2-3 row) ...he just left the stage...he was a little mmm tired for the situation...but just that.

A song later of that...Thurston was like "presenting the band" I mean he was presenting every band member....(but he maded that in a ironic way...maybe like that stadium bands) ...that was a bit confusing for the others members of the band (specially for Kim).

It seems Thurston's amps blew up during the song, He ended up leaving the stage for a while. Congrats to the peruvian friends. The feedback from the audience was amazing.
