psf records

i know it's a great label, but i don't know where to begin. help me, please.

Phlegmscope 05.27.2008 04:29 AM

Not that I know most of the artists on psf, but fushitsusha, all haino and high rise are probably the most well known on that label.

I'd love to invest in those Tokyo Flashback compilations. They'd be a good starting point I reckon.

d!o!d!o!d! are fantastic, kousokuya are legendary.

hat and bread 05.28.2008 05:17 AM

whale, this is hard. Browsing through the catalog these are some of my favorites.

High Rise - 2nd
Fushitsusha - PSF 15/16
Fushitsusha - Pathetique
Nijiumu - Era of Sad Wings
Keiji Haino - Watashi Dake
Keiji Haino - First let's remove the color
Keiji Haino - Yaranai ga dekinai ni natteyuku
Masayuki Takayanagi - Call in Question
Shuji Inaba - Land of Prayer
Acid Mothers Temple - Troubadours from another Heavenly World
Kousokuya - First
Toshiaki Ishizuka - Drum Drama

I find it hard to recommend any specific Kan Mikami or Kazuki Tomokawa albums, but they're all great. Barking Practice is a definite Mikami favorite.... eh, get them all.

blunderbuss 05.28.2008 08:19 AM

cool - thanks, guys. i'll have a browse on some of the online stores and see what of those i can find.

batreleaser 05.28.2008 11:48 AM

i love kazuki tomokawa. easily one of the best singer songwriters (if you wanna call him that) japan has ever produced. his lyrics are sooooo fucked up, and his vocal style is just nuts. they call him the "screaming philosopher". his work for takashi miike's films was amazing. check out his boxset if you have the cash, its fucking huge, most of his records and 3 cd's of unreleased music, everything you need to hear from this guy.

masayoshi urabe is incredible too. one of the most physical and extreme saxophone players ive ever heard, i could listen to the sounds this guy makes for a whole day and not get bored. he reminds me of john zorn, if john zorn could do backflips while busting out 7 minute notes. for his solo stuff, my favorites by him are all his "V.A." records. cant go wrong with any of them. for his collabs, check out his work with hiroshi hasegawa (C.C.C.C.), some of the sickest sounds ive ever heard. hes also just started a new band with mikami toshi ishizuka called sanjah, check it.

acid mother temple guitarist + high rise bassist + drum dude = rock n roll chaos

DNAINTHEDNA 05.29.2008 08:29 AM

high rise is great...still love fushitsusha

Semperet 05.29.2008 08:45 AM

I'd begin with the two Fushitsusha double live records (3-4 and 15-16), but they're both way too expensive to take a chance. Why not get your little tootsies wet first with the Canadian live release "Withdraw this Sable Devotion" on Victor records? It's got some nice stuff on it, the highlight being Pathetique. And it won't cost the earth. The Pathetique album on PSF is also fantastic, but I wouldn't go for Allegorical Misunderstanding or The Caution Appears until you're really certain that Haino is God--an epiphany which will come if you spend enough money on his records.
I don't really like the mix on the Acid Mothers stuff that early, but it's still Acid Mothers. So Pataphysical Freak Out Mu for me (although now I'm not sure whether it's on PSF so I might be slightly off-topic. So I'll stop.

DNAINTHEDNA 05.29.2008 08:49 AM

I've really been into these PSF records as of late

agreed, i wouldn't recommend their 1978 album as a first buy either.
