going to new york city...

hi

i'm going to new york city next weekend, and i was wondering if anyone here had any good suggestions on where to eat, shop or any good museums/sites to see

i thinking about going to the museum of modern art and maybe some other museums, and planning to shop at store like Alife, Atmos, etc... But that's all i have, so does anyone know any good record stores, and i mean good not big, i don't want to go to some virgin megastore or something. or any good clothing stores, preferably cheap, like some vintage store.

i only have a weekend so i don't have much time...thanks for all the suggestions

MoMa is the shit. As for record stores I like Academy Records. And even though they don't have the BIGGEST record selection I really like Other Music which is fun because it's down the street from The Public Theater and right by Astor Place and St. Marks Place which is endless fun. And, because I'm a geek I do suggest that while you're in New York you see a Broadway or Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway show. You'll be glad you did.

check out the guggenheim its amazing

For Food i loved Ellens Stardust Diner in Times Square, it was my favourite place to eat.

For Records i spent $140 in Bleeker Street records when i was there, so thats a definite good place to start.

MoMA is shit??!

screamingskull 01.05.2008 07:05 PM

I know I'm quoting myself but I don't care. I have suggestions if you so choose too venture to some New York theater. These are my fave shows:

Speech & Debate (Off-Off-Broadway, 65 person black box theater)
Saw it twice in previews, it's been extended twice because it's AWESOME. Small intimate theater, awesome show.

Spring Awakening (Broadway, 1100 person theater, still surprisingly intimate)
Seriously, do yourself the favor. It's a rock musical about sex. Student rush tickets are only $26. It won eight Tonys this year, including best musical. For $30 you can sit ON the stage, next to the actors. Seriously.

thanks so much

also, what's like the legal age for smoking and drinking? i heard it was 18 for smoking and 21 for drinking? and if there's a show at bar or at a club do you ushave to be 21 to get in or do some places have like wristbands for the kids

woops! has been a long day..... sorry!
if i were in new york right now i'd go to The Kitchen - it's an art space in brooklyn and there is regularly stuff on. i know this because i get email updates in case one day i decide to buy a ticket to new york city.

Ripchord 01.05.2008 09:26 PM

If you wanna look at galleries, just walk around Chelsea.
And then see Spring Awakening, have I mention y'all should see it? Ya should.

You big Apple residents are lucky bastards.

uhler 01.05.2008 09:53 PM

i just got back from brooklyn. go to the cake shop. it's in the lower east side i think, and they sell records and stuff. plus, they are named after a swell maps song.

also, go to the bars that give you free pizza if you buy a drink. you can't beat pizza and beer.

drrrtyboots 01.05.2008 11:40 PM

www.ohmyrockness.com

It lists all of the concerts in mostly smaller, GA standing room type venues in manhattan and brooklyn. Most of the venues will let you in at 18.

as a new yorker, i'd be interested to know where these bars are:) i've been to one in williamsburg but that's the only one i know of.

if you want to check out an off-broadway show, check out fuerzabruta. i haven't seen it yet, but it's by the same people who did de la guarda, which was awesome. it's also only in town til february. http://www.fuerzabruta.net/website/fuerza_eng.html

Cantankerous 01.06.2008 01:02 PM

if you can afford it, my favorite store is poppet on east 9th st.

m1rr0r dash 01.06.2008 02:25 PM

my brother and i just checked out the new museum of contemporary art on bowery. the current exhibit is

Unmonumental: The Object in the 21st Century

some of it was less than impressive, but there were some mexican sculptors with interesting stuff, and some former saatchi artists up to their usual antics.... and the new building is awesome. at the book shop i got a signed mary kelly (http://www.x-traonline.org/vol9_4/images/Wack29.jpg) exhibit catalog for 18 dollars.

the whitney didn't seem to have anything interesting, so i skipped it this time, but you judge for yourself:

http://www.whitney.org/www/exhibition/index.jsp

i was only in the city for an afternoon so i didn't do any gallery hopping, but i usually like to check out david zwirner, gagosian, and deitch projects. i've also seen good shows at the chelsea art museum.http://chelseaartmuseum.org/

further down the bowery from the new museum (but not all the way to canal street) was the best bowl of Phở i've ever had.... ever.

Go to the Cloisters in Uptown Manhattan for fine Mideval art you'll find Robert Campin's altar piece there also, Jammyland records for your reggae needs. Go down Bleeker for other genres you'll also find some basement record stores in the vicinity plus the Movie Poster gallery if you want the Italian poster to Once Upon a Time in America. Go to 42st a block past Virgin then turn the corner go a block down you'll see a place that sell Kung Fu & Flicks all in the same spot. Get yourself some Chinese food Uptown while you're @ it, it's some of the best.

tesla69 01.07.2008 11:20 AM

yeah if you want the official corporate avant-gardey definitely check out MOMA.

Personally, I'd recommend the Merchants Captain Museum and then the Tenament Museum. But for art stuff, go over to the White Box Gallery and then right nearby explore the 100's of galleries and studios in West Chelsea.

I don't know much about used clothing other than Saturday I tried to sell some used Levis at the Buffalo exchange in W'burg (9th & Driggs, easy trip on the L train to bedford).

amyvega 01.07.2008 12:53 PM

Moma is pretty awesome; they also serve the best sundaes I've ever had in their little cafeteria.

I went to the Met last weekend and saw Damien Hirst's shark in formaldehyde. Not sure if that's your kind of thing but there's a lot to see there and you 'donate' however much money you want for admission.

I'm biased but I think just hanging around the east village will satisfy you with enough cool bars, record shops, and restaurants that are affordable.

EMMAh 01.07.2008 01:10 PM

I want to go to NYC.
