Bohren & der Club of Gore

Surprised to see this band never mentioned before, especially after checking thier last.fm page (http://www.last.fm/music/Bohren%2B%2...ub%2Bof%2BGore) and seeing they had 47000 listeners on there! I mean, I'd never heard of them either, so that kinda shocked me. And they even have an album on Ipecac. ANYWAY...

Just acquired their entire discography and it's amazing stuff. Droney, dark lounge music with some very very dark jazz and occasional, very light doom and noise elements. Most of it sounds like music to Twin Peaks. Great shit...

"unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds" I'm sure fans of Robe. would enjoy it...

joe11121 01.20.2009 11:08 PM

yeah they're pretty sweet

atsonicpark 01.20.2009 11:12 PM

Also, they have a really awful name, really awful album titles and covers with skulls and "666" and upside down crosses and Bruce Lee on them and shit, but their music is amazing.

Everyneurotic 01.21.2009 02:06 AM

been listening to them for like a year.

their last album is pretty awesome, black earth bored me to tears but my favorite is the one with a german name, forgot how it is.

they are kinda like really good but mostly they are not that above background music, so they don't seem very relevant. when they're on, you like what you hear but you hardly get excited over them.

if you like them, check out the kilimanjaro darkjazz ensemble, they sort of have a similar vibe.

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 11:54 AM

My favorite is MIDNIGHT RADIO, which is like 3 chords for 2 1/2 hours. There's just something about it.

kilimanjaro darkjazz ensemble? Sounds right up my alley, thanks!

noisereductions 01.21.2009 12:31 PM

I only have the new album.

al shabbray 01.21.2009 01:38 PM

I was listening to them some years ago. they were a lil bit hyped by the music magazine I was reading that time. some amazing stuff.
the reference to twin peaks nails it somehow...
I hate their name, maybe thats the reason why they werent mentioned before, too

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 01:40 PM

Yeah... Within 1 minute of one of their songs, I instantly was like "holy shit, the red room music from twin peaks!"

al shabbray 01.21.2009 01:42 PM

yes!
I love everything angelo badalamenti did for twin peaks, and almost everything he ever did.
bohren & the most ugly name ever are like the rockish version of it. I think I wil dig them out again, in a few weeks when I am able to stop listen to grouper all day long, hahaha

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 01:44 PM

goood. grouper rules too!!

al shabbray 01.21.2009 01:52 PM

definately.
I only know "dragging a dead deer..." but I love it so much.
do you know her earlier (more noisy) works?
it sounds pretty rad, but they go on german amazon for about 28 euros each. and I really wanna check before ordering for such a high price

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 02:05 PM

Yeah I've heard everything, and I like it all, though Dragging a Dead Deer is probably the only, uh, "Essential" one thus far.

stadtgorilla 01.21.2009 02:16 PM

I've been to one of their shows here in munich and it was so cool. No lights except those little lamps on their notestands and a fluorescent skull on the bass drum. would have been too creepy without their sense of humour; one announcement was: "the next song is for people who like to ride on the highway with 40 km/h". a doom metal feel with jazz instrumentation at 40bpm. Very cinematic. Great band. Looking forward to hear their latest release.

If anyone wants an album...

TheFoxBen 08.10.2009 07:13 PM

"Sunset Mission" is my favorite jazz album ever.

atsonicpark 08.10.2009 08:02 PM

they rule so much

Derek 08.11.2009 10:55 AM

Definitely, one of the best atmospheres in a band ever.

DanielCarlson 08.11.2009 11:14 AM

I love them so much. Sunset Mission is probably my favorite jazz album ever as well, but almost everything from them are so fucking great. I'd love to see them live.

atsonicpark 08.11.2009 11:51 AM

they rule

atsonicpark 09.05.2009 08:23 PM

Been listening to their new one "Mitleid Lady" which is just one 10 minute track and it's MINDBLOWING.

One of the best, best, BEST.

More Bohren love! I listened to Black Earth again yesterday night, they're the best. I want a new album!

TheFoxBen 02.02.2010 04:03 PM

They must be a very good live band. They came here in Brussels in 2008... I hope they will come back !

atsonicpark 02.02.2010 05:31 PM

Hahah, they're one of my favorite bands but I can't imagine them being good live, at all.

DanielCarlson 02.03.2010 11:56 AM

I don't think they're a good live band in the usual sense, i.e. seen to stage presence and so on. BUT, in Bohren's case, I think that's how it should be. I doubt I wouldn't love them live, just them, their music and a dark venue with all lights put out. I think it would be quite awesome, and I've heard many great things about their live shows.

krugersoldier 02.04.2010 04:31 AM

They are superb live. I saw them when Sunset Mission came out. The DJ played Black Metal crap for about a half hour before they came on. This worked very well because the music was so soothing afterwards. They played the whole show behind a curtain of steel chains, amazing atmosphere. They are great players, i am a musician and i know how hard it is to play so slowly.

atsonicpark 04.14.2010 07:38 AM

TheFoxBen 04.14.2010 07:51 AM

SYRFox 04.14.2010 08:01 AM

TheFoxBen 04.14.2010 08:01 AM

No, I'm lazy.

SYRFox 04.17.2010 04:24 PM

the show was shit

TheFoxBen 04.17.2010 04:30 PM

Haha, dude, you weren't even there...

Well, the show tonight was... pretty good, the atmosphere was great, really classy and all but I was a little bit disappointed... Maybe I was expecting too much from them but yeah, I wish it was less repetitive and more diversified, in the sound. However, the sound of the saxophone was crystal clear... Too bad there was too much bass in the bass guitar and the Rhodes piano. Very good show nonetheless.

Also, Ignatz was pretty cool, you know him Adam, right ? Even live, he keeps the lo-fi aesthetic of the thing and he reminded me of The Velvet Underground... a lot. He played a great but short set.
