Legend.

Savage Clone 08.10.2007 04:04 PM

Wow.
I didn't even know he had cancer.
RIP, and thanks.

Pookie 08.10.2007 04:08 PM

Neither did I.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of any of the music he was involved with. But you can't deny his importance.

And he was a real character on British TV through the 80s and 90s.

jon boy 08.10.2007 04:12 PM

very sad indeed.

sarramkrop 08.10.2007 04:18 PM

I'm surprised that he lived with cancer for so long. Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about that on the personal side, but I think that in music terms he's always been way too revered. Whichever the case, RIP Anthony Wilson.

For 24 Hr. Party People, he was determined to get a Boethius reference in there. And he did. Who can replace him?

Everyneurotic 08.10.2007 04:23 PM

wow, that was surprising.

important guy, certainly.

I ask myself that when it comes to John Peel., but Tony Wilson?

Everyneurotic 08.10.2007 04:34 PM

he was important for his time; peel, on the other hand, never seized to be on the frontline, the vanguard. different people, different lives.

Rob Instigator 08.10.2007 04:44 PM

both were asskickin

No Tony Wilson - no Factory Records.
No Factory Records - no Joy Division, no New Order, no Happy Mondays, no Section 25, no A Certain Ratio, no Hacienda, no Durutti Column, no James, no OMD, no Stockholm Monsters.

All of these artists had, and continue to have a profound effect on my worldview.

Tony Wilson may not have been everybody's cup of tea as a person, but his label and the bands he signed produced some of the most important music of the last 30 years. The man was a genius, and I hope that he and John Peel get to share a curry in the afterlife.

fugazifan 08.10.2007 06:33 PM

wow, everybody is dying.
this is a really bummer.
RIP

Toilet & Bowels 08.10.2007 07:29 PM

i always found him intolerable. and if factory hadn't put out all those bands someone else would have.

Hip Priest 08.11.2007 04:04 AM

As news journalist, quiz-show host, record company boss and radio presenter, he excelled; Anthony H Wilson is someone who I admired my whole life. Decent, clever and witty, and always the one with the best suits (and he was always the nice, clever, witty one with the best suits, right up until the end).

That's not necessarily true. And even if it were, I can't think of ANY label at the time besides Factory that would've given them the same amount of artistic liberty.

Factory still inspires me far more than any other label. To fail because of big ideas is far better than to succeed because of modest ones.

The world needs more people like Tony Wilson, now we've got one less. That's fucked.

sarramkrop 08.11.2007 09:31 AM

People, say what you like. Joy Division are no more than music to self-harm to. I like some of their music, but still.....

Palmer Eldritch 08.11.2007 10:51 AM

i worked with tony and he was a friend. a lovely man that our city owes a great debt to. when i found out he had cancer i wrote him a letter in hospital and he told me to fuck off and stop feeling sorry for him like all the other c**ts. it made me laugh out loud. he's th reason i moved to manchester. and one of the reasons i remain here.
