Girls - Album

I'm just finishing listening to it for the first time and I'm digging it. I don't see any threads about it which surprises me. I mean, I imagine I'm going to get shit for listening to them but there are a lot of fairies on here I thought'd like them. Anybody else heard it?

davenotdead 10.15.2009 12:43 PM

crypto loves it.

i like a couple songs... but it got old on me real quick

Derek 10.15.2009 12:49 PM

For some reason I can tell pitchfork likes this and this is the first I've heard about them.

Nothing against them, just an observation.

9.1... man I'm good!

atsonicpark 10.15.2009 01:01 PM

I've never said this, ever:

The name and the album title make me not want to check 'em out.

I mean, I will eventually, I'm sure, but that has to be the worst band/album name combo ever.

erm... the video's cool I suppose

AllHandsOnTheBigOne 10.15.2009 01:38 PM

I don't really find much to enjoy from Girls. It sounds very... Pitchfork though, so, if you like things that sound like things Pitchfork thinks is cool then have at it.

Derek 10.15.2009 01:44 PM

Honestly, I could tell this was a pitchfork band just from the band name, title and album art. Boring.

vulva 10.15.2009 02:00 PM

that song in the video was awful =(

Derek 10.15.2009 02:02 PM

After looking at the videos on youtube... I'm not motivated to listen to the album.

I might give it a better chance at some point maybe.

Mote = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymop5IaNst8

davenotdead 10.15.2009 02:06 PM

the best songs are headache and morning light.

really, the guy mostly just cops ariel pink and roy orbison and shoegaze stuff.

headache has the Orbison vocals... probably why i like it. and morning light is the shoegazey one. they're both good songs... just not at all original in any way.

the vibe is so weird that i guess its kind of original in some way... its weird

atsonicpark 10.15.2009 02:17 PM

Listening to "Lust for Life".... shit kinda sucks.

Listening to "Morning Light"... Is this a Mote cover? Homage? Ripoff?... this doesn't sound like the same band as the song above and it's actually pretty decent enough song but um... sounds a lot like MOTE, too much for comfort.

Listening to "Hellhole Ratrace". This is the worst thing I've ever heard.

This band promises nourishment even while they conjure up thoughts of emaciation -- easy listening for people still not ready to put on their Wavves Pull-Ups yet.

This band sucks.

Seandi 10.15.2009 02:24 PM

nigga, please

atsonicpark 10.15.2009 02:28 PM

Hey, guys, I just heard that figurative painting is dead. Time to fragment the image!

Alex's Trip 10.15.2009 02:33 PM

Too catchy to turn down.

There have been too many bands in the last three decades called Girls or The Girls. And none of them hold a candle to the best moments of the band from Boston in the late 70s/early 80s. Therefore, I also run the other way from any new band that makes a radar blip with that name. It happens every five years or so. The last Girls were a Seattle band on Dirtnap. Pretty mediocre.

Trasher02 10.15.2009 02:50 PM

Doesnt' do much for me. Pretty boring to be honest. Also the Mote rip-off wtf?!

automatic bzooty 10.15.2009 03:10 PM

wow, it's like every other shoegaze/shitgaze/lo-fi/whatever band around right now! except not as good! i'm amazed y'all.

mote is a fucking excellent song, but if you have to resort to ripping it off... no. just no.

That's true. I thought it was a bad name but it is one of the strangest and genuinely interesting pop release of the year.

TheFoxBen 10.15.2009 03:20 PM

I loved this album from the first listen so I'm digging it yeah, "Laura" has to be one of my favorite songs of the year.

Really? It seemed rather run of the mill to me.

Yeah, outside of his voice, which sounds like an effeminate take on Danzig or something, I didn't notice anything even remotely weird about it.

HaydenAsche 10.15.2009 03:40 PM

I don't know. There just seems to be a strange feeling behind the music. It's probably all in my head. I still haven't listened to it without doing hot knives and bong hits first.

greedrex 10.15.2009 03:47 PM

exploding plastic candle 10.15.2009 05:53 PM

I like the song Laura. everything else is just completely mediocre

dionysusundone 10.15.2009 09:44 PM

I really like this album. I must be getting more P4K friendly in my old age, between this and the XX

Decayed Rhapsody 10.15.2009 11:47 PM

If you want POPPY stuff, you MUST MUST MUST get King Tuff - Was Dead. Production, hooks, songs, the glammy nasal vocals. It's all there.

Satan 10.16.2009 12:08 AM

girls are fucking stupid

Absolutely agreed!

But will any of our Pitchfork-kneepads-wearers listen to King Tuff?

I guess just being a really, really awesome band in Vermont that is not playing whiteboy reggae is not as interesting a story as a band's lead-singer growing up in a cult, such as with this Girls band.

Of course, the other thing is that the tiny Colonel Records label that put out the King Tuff vinyl and the small-change Burger Records label that put out the cassette version has no money for the "pay-to-play" game which ultimately decides whether Pitchfork gives you special attention.

If you knew how dirty Pitchfork is with the pay-to-play scheme, then you might get disgusted and finally stop using them as a roadmap for building a record collection that you will wanna bulldoze by your mid-30s, if not by next year when you realize how little staying power this fluff actually has.

Sadly, even a respected news figure gets dragged into this morass...

You're totally right, brosef. I do need a collection that has staying power. Not a collection that I, you know, enjoy or anything.

Derek 10.22.2009 03:54 PM

That's not exactly what he means.
