Do you suppose I've gone a bit overboard?

Glice 03.03.2009 06:02 PM

Which one's the best?

greedrex 03.03.2009 06:04 PM

Super band
ahead of their time.

Dead-Air 03.03.2009 10:30 PM

Is that your personal collection??

Best as in quality of music or quality of recordings?
Well everyone has their own favorite line up but mines the David Cross, Bill Bruford, Robert Fripp, Jaime Muir, John Wetton line up that ran from October 13 1972 to July 1 1974.
The officially released - commerically distributed or collectors club mail order or dgmlive dowload - obviously have the best sound, Fripp and David Singleton can really work wonders on old tapes, as for the regular bootlegs well people weren't exactly using DAT recorders in 1973 but most are still alright, I prefer not to keep the really awful like one I recently came across (and promptly deleted) that sounded like it had been recorded from inside a suitcase full of wool blankets.

I was at this show ! I have the bootleg too. How 'bout them Texan accent's of the recorders ? What a drawl.

There's screaming version of 21st Century Schizoid Man, Fripp really wails !

Nice collection there Lamont. Do you not have the Heavy Construction live set from 2000 ? I think that's a great one too.

Wow!
Yeah I've got Heavy Construction and all the other similar sets but didn't list them (except for one case). And yeah you're right towards the end of the '74 tour the music was getting really outstanding. The last 5 days have all be released by DGMlive and the Collectors Club, makes for a strange but great listening experience.

atsonicpark 03.04.2009 07:45 PM

That's a fucking amazing collection.

Crimson is one of my all time favorite bands. I seem to be one of the only people who rate Lizard and Power to Believe as amongst my favorite Crimson releases.

Though Red's my favorite.

Derek 03.05.2009 09:06 AM

King Crimson is one of my all time favourites also. Red, Larks Tongue and Discipline are some of the greatest albums ever!

Lizard is damn good, especially Cirkus (definitely in my top ten KC songs.) Power to Believe is solid, but it's not something I throw on too often. As far as overlooked Crim albums go, my favorite is Islands.

Very very strong discography overall. The only KC album I dislike is The ConstruKCtion of Light.

atsonicpark 03.05.2009 02:31 PM

Really? I love Construktion of Light. The guitar interplay is mind blowing.

the red terror 03.09.2009 10:12 AM

Cool list. I've long been looking for their Toronto show on the Three of a Perfect Pair tour, can't remember the exact date, but presume that 1984 Montreal show might've been the day before-or-after.

I also love Fripp's "Blessing of Tears" from the mid-90s Soundscapes-period...

Derek 03.31.2010 10:37 AM

Best band ever.

atsonicpark 03.31.2010 10:43 AM

they're up there. I seem to love their less-appreciated albums more, like Lizards/Construktion/Power. Though Red will always be my fav.

Derek 03.31.2010 10:48 AM

Top 5:
1. Red
2. Discipline
3. Larks Tongues in Aspic
4. Beat
5. THRAK

A lot of people don't seem to like Beat. I don't why, I think it's a brilliant piece of work with fantastic guitar interplay.

SuperCreep 03.31.2010 11:17 AM

top five for me:

1. larks'
2. red
3. ITCotCK
4. discipline
5. islands

i dig beat. i think people think of it as a lesser discipline and it's definitely more dated compared to that one, so maybe that's why.

man, when is this band coming out with a new album already?

Derek 03.31.2010 11:26 AM

All their 80s stuff is kinda dated but I don't think that takes away from the impact it has on me. Nice list though.

chicka 03.31.2010 12:16 PM

I just want to thank you folks for getting me back into listening to them.
I absolutely loved In the Court but somehow I didn't follow that up. I'm listening to Red right now. Needless to say it's excellent

Derek 03.31.2010 12:35 PM

Red is indeed one of the best albums to grace my ears.
