Drive Like Jehu/Rocket From the Crypt/Hot Snakes

So I just got two Hot Snakes albums: suicide invoice and automatic midnight. i also have yank crime by DLJ. these albums are simply amazing. i wanna get the rest of both bands catalogs as well as rocket from the crypt. anybody have particular favs from these guys? i know some members are in more than one of these bands. great stuff.

HaydenAsche 05.03.2006 06:15 PM

I pretty much love Jehu and Hot Snakes. Great bands.

Never heard RFTC.

TheDom 05.03.2006 06:20 PM

Drive Like Jehu only has one more album. Get that. While it is not as good as Yank Crime it is still very good.

I guess this post doesn't help much...

RockerNino 05.03.2006 06:26 PM

John Reis (Speedo) who is in hot snakes and DLJ was also in rocket from the crpyt. they released stuff between the early 90s and early 2000s. more recently he started a band called the Sultans, but i havent heard much from them. they have been a great passion of mine lately. can anyone think of similar bands that i might like?

Pax Americana 05.03.2006 06:58 PM

I was actually just listening to Drive Like Jehu the other day. They're awesome.

nomadicfollower 05.03.2006 07:05 PM

I bought Scream, Dracula, Scream (Rocket From The Crypt) and never really enjoyed much at all. In fact I haven't listened to it in months.
It sounds like party-college rock...or something as annoying.

I make it sound like it's horrible, it's not. Some of you would probably like it. Just not my style.

Hot Snakes "Audit In Progress" is also really good. I dont think RFTC are as great as Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes.

The bass player from Hot Snakes has a band called Beehive and the Barracudas or something like that. I've only heard a few tracks but they were really good.

Yank Crimes is one of my favourite albums ever but I still haven't gotten around to picking up the first Drive Like Jehu album.

Also check out ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS, the band ROCKET FROM THE CYRPT got there name from. They are a Cleveland punk band whose members went on to form Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys.

That one Jehu song, "Turn it Off", is fucking intense.

Richard Pryor on Fire 05.03.2006 07:57 PM

I have a friend who's been really recommending me Hot Snakes, and Jehu saying they draw some influence from SY so I think I'm going to do it. I had Scream, Dracula, Scream and it was ok, but seeing RFTC live was cool.

HaydenAsche 05.03.2006 07:59 PM

Damn, dude. Jehu and Hot Snakes will change your life. I'm spinning my Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice vinyl right now.

Everyneurotic 05.03.2006 11:36 PM

the first jehu is different from yank crime, but it's still awesome.

rocket is kinda ok, scream dracula scream starts really good but then falls flat halfway thru. i've heard some songs from group sounds and they sound better than dracula.

hot snakes, simply get everything.

similar bands to jehu and the snakes...hmmm...unwound, polvo, shellac, trumans water; if you are into the punkier aspects, then check out heroin, antioch arrow, angel hair, swing kids, clikatat ikatowi...

Rocket from the Crypt played in my living room way back in the day.

The "party/college-rock" thing does describe pretty well what they do, and a couple albums such as "Scream..." are not particularly great. "Circa Now" is widely considered the definitive album to get, though. My favorite RFTC record was "The State of the Art Is on Fire"...available on 10" and CD from Sympathy for the Record Industry.

There was a pre-RFTC/DLJ band called Pitchfork. Their album is still in print, as their Swami label reissued it about 2 years ago. You might as well get that while you're at it.

These guys make it fairly easy to get all of the RFTC family tree stuff...check Swami Records website.

I love all of Jehu's output.
ALL OF IT!

check out ENIAC
and THE RED SCARE as well

1. Pitchfork-this was the band John & Rick(jehu/hotsnakes) were in BEFORE Drive Like Jehu or RFTC ever existed. I heard there was a PITCHFORK REUNION recently at LIVEWIRE(a bar in SD)...that really pisses me off.

The album is Eucalyptus and if you want a more melodic Jehu, Pitchfork is right there, I think I will always feel impartial to Pitchfork only because they were one of the first SD bands I got into when I grew up.

2. Drive Like Jehu also did the "BULLET TRAIN TO VEGAS" seven-inch, which is fantastic.

3. The S/T blows away Yank Crime by a mile. Anyone who got into Jehu with the 1st LP before Yank Crime will always side with the S/T...it was a much better album. Yank Crime seemed a bit unresolved, actually Yank Crime was considered a "let down" by most locals in SD, but that's just how it was back then. Yank Crime did have Rob Crow(Pinback/Heavy Vegetable/millions of other bands) sing on "Luau". To me, "Do you compute" just didn't really belong on the album, New Math & Rome Plows are the 2 best tracks...I would say there were probably 2 songs on there that I just did not like at all, but on the S/T one, I can't think of a dull song on there.

4. Hot Snakes > Jehu live...without question. Gar on bass made things much more fun and interesting than Mike K did. Hot Snakes looked like they were having fun, I never saw Rick have so much fun live, not even when he was in Jehu.

5. Gar Wood was in a band called FISHWIFE, who were truly amazing. If you get a chance, check out "RETALIN"...that album was incredible it was their last real official album before Ryan Foxe(singer) moved to NY and started a band called THE LET DOWNS. Fishwife did release a compilation of singles after "retalin" but it wasn't as good. Fishwife's 1st album "SNAIL KILLER" is brilliant as well.

6. TANNER-this was the band Gar, Matt, and Chris started after Fishwife, basically the same band except Gar took vocals and stayed on guitar. Personally, I always thought their 7-inchers were better(especially the GUARD DOG one). Very cool band if you're into those SD guitar hyper bands.

7. Gar > John (as a guitarist), but that's just my opinion.

8. The Sultans are fucking great! I like some of the Sultans stuff more than some of the Hot Snakes material.

9. Back Off Cupids-it was an early John sideproject, not a very good one though.

10. RFTC-Paint as a fragrance and Circa Now! are always going to be my 2 favorite. Paint as a fragrance was very different though.

OK, now I'm waiting for KKKCHRIST to make his, "oh, I live in SD" comment!

Blah blah blah.

Rocket from the Crypt - Group Sounds
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice

THree of my favorite records ever. DLJ and HS don't have many releases so you might as well get 'em all.
