10 best british musical entities of the last 25 years

make a list of them!

here are the rules: you can include bands who came out prior to 1981 on the condition that the majority/most highly acclaimed section of their output was not released prior to this year. that way you are allowed to include the fall, but aren't allowed to include the sex pistols or the rolling stones, for example.

please make list, NOW!

The Cure
Oasis
Radiohead

I don't care after those three.

Glice 08.19.2006 12:49 PM

Are MBV not Irish then?

The Fall, Ashtray Navigations, Monkey vs Robot, Sclub7, Mogwai, Urusei Yatsura, Lolita Storm, The Country Teasers/ The Rebel, AMM, Derek Bailey.

*Edit - I assume AMM and Derek Bailey don't count. But balls to you, I likes 'em.

Kate Bush (not a band, but definitely an entity hehe & primarily known after 1981)
The Smiths
The Fall
The Cure
The Police
Radiohead
Love and Rockets
Duran Duran
Arcadia
Soweto Kinch (again, not a band, but a contemporary jazz saxophonist)
New Order
The Jesus & Mary Chain
aren't The Birthday Party transplanted from Australia but still kinda British?
if forced to name a DJ, Mr. Scruff

I suppose Wire, Buzzcocks, Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Clash & Sex Pistols are a bit too early. And from a period even more previous, Nick Drake, Roxy Music, T. Rex (Marc Bolan), Syd Barrett, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, The Who & Pink Floyd would get mentions.

Everyneurotic 08.19.2006 01:10 PM

hmm:

-venom
-the fall (did you have to say it?)
-discharge
-vibracathedral orchestra
-the smiths
-napalm death
-spacemen 3/loop/spiritualized (tied, they complement each other)
-radiohead
-aphex twin
-massive attack

hard and approximated, as i said on the u.s. one, there's a lot more than 10

pokkeherrie 08.19.2006 01:35 PM

i'm a bit tired at the moment so i'm probably forgetting a lot of stuff, but these 10 would be contenders for me

stereolab
vibracathedral orchestra
massive attack
skullflower (based on 1-2 albums)
spacemen 3
pj harvey (despite her latest stuff)
jesus and mary chain (based on 1-2 albums)
the cure (not sure on them because their best stuff was until 1982)
the fall (don't have anything past 1985 though)
leftfield, but only their first album
radiohead, although i never really listen to them anymore

this somehow seems much easier for bands before 1981.

pokkeherrie 08.19.2006 02:44 PM

- the birthday party are 100% australian, but they were based in both london and berlin for a while.

- i didn't count my bloody valentine as british, otherwise i would include them.

- stereolab wouldn't count as 100% british either, but if they have any nationality as a band then it's definitely british.

porkmarras 08.19.2006 02:45 PM

This will take me quite some time.

porkmarras 08.19.2006 02:50 PM

porkmarras 08.19.2006 02:57 PM

I aint think so.

k-krack 08.19.2006 03:33 PM

Mogwai
The Smiths
The Cure
The Fall
Radiohead
Aphex Twin
MBV
don't remember many right now.

Tokolosh 08.19.2006 03:50 PM

The Police
Portishead
The Jesus and the Mary Chain
Aphex T
Depeche Mode
David Sylvian. With and without Japan
Radiohead
The Clash. Just
Bauhaus. Does it count?
New Order

Atari, Soweto Kinch is very cool. I've got one of his cds. He's originally from South Africa.

atari 2600 08.19.2006 04:35 PM

Conversations with the Unseen is one of the better jazz releases these days. good Portishead mention.

no mention of Beth Gibbons solo...or Morrissey solo by anyone yet.
Spacemen 3/Loop was a good choice nailed by Everyneurotic...Spiritualized...
pokkeherrie got Stereolab & k-krack named Mogwai...Maybe Broadcast are list-worthy.

XTC could arguably be included even though they formed pre-1981.

o o o 08.19.2006 04:54 PM

Autechre
Aphex Twin
The Fall
The Smiths
The Pastels
Dizzee Rascal
Vibracathedral Orchestra
Nurse With Wound
Stereolab
Broadcast
Spacemen 3
Jesus & Mary Chain

I will stop thinking it over, because I already wrote 12 names, and I must have forgotten some and I do not want my brain to fight over who to eliminate to come up with a list of 10...

acousticrock87 08.19.2006 04:56 PM
