one of the bast sy records

greenlight 09.03.2006 07:21 AM

sy on their way to peak (hehe). great album. each songs deserves 9.8 at least. espec. shadow of the doubt, in the kingdom #19, green light, death to our friends and express way to yr. skull.

What's everybody's problem with Bubblegum? Kim Fowley oughta bust yr heads!

One of my favorite albums as well...

atari 2600 09.03.2006 11:16 AM

I think Bubblegum is a decent song but it ruins the mood. The vinyl is way better then the cd because
1. It sounds better
2. Expressway To Yr. Skull loops at the end and in order to make it stop you have to physically remove it

Out of their 80's it's DDN > EVOL > CIS > Sister >>> BMR

BMR is kinda charming, but it's really obnoxious, and obnoxious being a bad thing for SY is really bad because SY is probably at their best when they're obnoxious (see Rain King).

CIS is their most charming record, not that it's the best. They couldn't quite articulate what they would in the EVOL - DDN but the songs are just amazing, it's all noisy pop, and atleasy 7/9 songs on CIS are > 9.1 but overall it's a 10.0 record like EVOL or DDN

Sister is definetly around 9.5 but it doesn't reach the perfectiong of the other albums, but it does well enough to be an outstanding album, one of the best albums of the 80's still; kind of like a worse Smiths record.

and to say something I didn't about EVOL already Expressway is completely amazing because of how it relieves you after a few tense dark songs (bar the first 5 songs).

btw I wonder what average people find more inaccessible, original Sonic Youth EP or BMR.

schizophrenicroom 09.03.2006 11:46 AM

asim- bmr is more inaccessible. the ep is really easy to sit down with. the drums are funky, and the production's more clear. bmr is something i have to be in the mood to listen to.

Gainsbarre 09.03.2006 12:29 PM

I just listened to BMR and am almost thru EVOL.

God I love these fucking records!

Gainsbarre 09.03.2006 12:32 PM

Expressway...

It's almost painful to listen to it's so great...

The vinyl is where it's at, but I still like Bubblegum gotdammit!

Anyone a fan of "Outrageous" where Bubblegum originates from?

satirejohn 09.03.2006 02:41 PM

aha! maybe my favourite album ever!

Tom Violence - 10 (best song on the album)
Shadow of a Doubt - 10
Starpower - 9.9
In the Kingdom #19 - 8.5
Green Light - 8
Death to our Friends - 9
Secret Girl - 9.5
Marilyn Moore - 9
Expressway to Yr Skull - 10
Bubblegum - 6 (it's okay, but definately doesnt fit the album and shouldn't be included)

satirejohn 09.03.2006 02:41 PM

Starpower probably should be a ten'er also....

CHOUT 09.03.2006 05:19 PM

Listening to EVOL for the first time was one of the most magical listening-to-an-album-for-the-first-time experiences ever. I felt immediately connected to it.

I might change my mind on this or do it out of 100. EDIT thats more accurate i think

How would, say, 8.5 out of 10 be more accurate than 85 out of a 100???

Lurker 09.04.2006 11:36 AM

I didn't say it would be more accurate, that was referring to somthing else. I changed my scores.

it's a lock-in groove at the end. how annoying. i have an L7 single that does that as well.
you don't actually have to pull the arm up, you can just press the stop button.

DoubleNickels 09.04.2006 01:26 PM

When I was ripping all my CDs to digital (Yeah yeah I know, shut up) I left Bubblegum off the album because I felt it ruined the flow so bad.

Cantankerous 09.04.2006 01:36 PM

i think it's great, it's like a little surprise at the end of expwy. in fact, i like their version much better than the kim fowley version.
