Metallic Falcons
Red Transistor

There are more but thats all I can think of at the moment...

Congratultions on growing to like Angels of Light, Johnny. It's a real shame that they still seem to be looked upon as Michael Gira's post-Swans band rather than as a bloody good band in their own right.

...I'm so pleased that I got to hear them properly this year and I fucking love them. After a lengthy hiatus I'm pleased to say that Michael Gira is back in my life!... I stopped listening to him after Children Of God... so we're talking the late 80's!!!. I love the Akron/Family so when I heard the split album with AOL it really piqued my interest so I took a chance and bought Sing 'Other People' and I've never looked back... my next purchase was 'Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home' and I now look forward to exploring all of the other material... what do you think my next move should be?

I'd go for "How I Loved You" or one of the Michael Gira limited solo CDs that he has for sale on the Young God Records website. Or "Songs For A Dog" on Lumberton Trading (which features some highlights from the aforementioned solo CDs) if you fancy vinyl.

toxic johnny 12.15.2006 08:08 AM

I always fancy vinyl... so I'll go for 'Songs For A Dog" next... thanks Sonicl.

The Carpenters went from something I enjoyed to one of my top 5 bands this year, accompanied by my new found ability to swoon dramatically at middle-8s.

Hank Wangford and Gene Autry have done a lot for me this year, where previously they haven't. Meatloaf also. I finally got into the Kelly Clarkson record. I found myself enjoying the Yeah yeah yeahs, Planes MFS and MCR a lot this year. Opera has taken an upswing in my tastes. I've enjoyed it for a while, but I've found listening to complete operas all the way through in one sitting difficult in the past. Wartime pop/ jazz is probably the biggest thing for me this year, it's the first time since I was about 13 that an entire era/ 'genre' has caught me so absolutely.

Nutbush City Limits by Ike and Tina Turner had been a revelation for me this year. I think I had previously only heard some later Tina only version which was shit. So I always thought it was a shit song but the original is really great. Either that or I just had a messed up memory of the original...

Glice 12.15.2006 09:15 AM

Nah, the Tina version's gash. You're right about the Ike and Tina one though. Patchy, patchy history that woman (musically speaking).
