the constantly-bumped "great releases of 2013" thread

I know it is only the 3rd but I thought i'd start the '2013' thread

I really enjoyed listening to Broadcast's Berberian Sound Studio earlier.
It has a similar vibe to Investigates Witch Cults of the Radio Age so fans of that will definitely enjoy this one.

It is available to stream here

I fucking love Broadcast. I have for some time, but rarely meet anyone who shares my enthusiasm. I don't have the album yet, but it should be arriving shortly. Haven't listened to a second of it. I'm going to treat it like a late Xmas present.

Roy Montgomery's Music from the Film Hey Badfinger.

Fictional soundtrack to a movie about the band. It's great this guy is releasing stuff again. I have always really his stuff whether it be solo or with The Pin Group/Dadamah.

Really excited about "Peter Brötzmann -Long Story Short", a 5 CD boxset documenting Music Unlimited Festival 2011, curated by Peter Brötzmann; including recordings of performances by Full Blast, Hairy Bones, Chicago Tentet, Keiji Haino, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Okkyung Lee with Xu Fengxia & Michiyo Yagi, and a lot more awesomeness...

Palm Desert - Rotten Village Sessions (Stoner)
Traumahelikopter - Traumahelikopter (Garage Rock, sort of Cramps-like)

Severian 01.11.2013 10:22 PM

Yo La Tengo, Broadcast, and Low (yes, I listened to it) are early front runners.

batreleaser 01.17.2013 08:24 PM

I like the new Widowspeak a lot.

hirsute_biped 01.18.2013 12:16 AM

Hopefully the new Black Sabbath album 13 featuring 3/4 original members to be released in June is worthy of the original lineup's output.

pad_023 02.04.2013 12:22 PM

New Robedoor is pretty rad.

This is pretty great. I've just got this and their first LP and early 7 inches within the last few weeks. This new one has some Morricone-like parts, which sort of related to the Broadcast record mentioned above (which I havn't heard yet) though I suspect the soundtracks they are referencing are quite different. Also, gotta love Thrill Jockey's policy of posting full track length streams for every release.

Fender just released a new version of the Fender Bass VI guitar, which was unavailable for a long time and very high priced on the collectors market, and which is played all over these records, for a non-outlandish price (still too much for yours truly at the moment). Coincidence? So want one of those...

SYRFox 02.05.2013 04:56 PM

the new faltydl is pretty good. thought it was a letdown at first but eventually it feels like a solid album.
ben ufo's fabriclive mix is amazing as well but that's not surprising considering the permanent quality of his sets

Mortte Jousimo 02.06.2013 04:31 AM

There is coming another "new" Hendrix album:

How do they keep releasing such great albums?

pad_023 02.23.2013 09:23 AM

New Thought Forms is great, they have made a big step up from their debut which is good.

pad_023 03.06.2013 07:38 PM

Two new releases I have been listening to a lot include Blank Realm Go Easy and Filthy Huns S/T. Blank Realm are some weirdo psych garage band from Australia. They released some pretty cool stuff in the past on NNF. There seems to be a lot of awesome aussie music around at the moment. Filthy Huns is also pretty rad, all the characteristics of a classic NNF release.

Hendrix People, Hell, and Angels:

A lot of the posthumous albums for Hendrix aren't necessarily better then previously released versions. My favorite was the MCA Box Set with four discs of live material and unreleased studio cuts. Everything that has been released in the past 13 years are just differing versions of the tracks from this box set. I did pick up Valleys On Neptune, which initially I didn't particularly like because I don't like Noel on the bass, I prefer Billy Cox. Later that album grew on me, and it was decently mastered (though Eddie Kramer is a shit engineer, most of his "official" Hendrix mixes are shit). That being said, this album is all Billy Cox and Mitch, which is my favorite Hendrix group. I think that Mitch and Jimi had great chemistry, and Billy sealed it. I listened to some samples and streams of these tracks, I dig it, so I will probably pick it up. Of course my love of Hendrix makes me move in slow motion to get new purchases, I really like the versions of all these same songs which I already have..

I'm still waiting for Shannon Wright In Film Sound to come out next week, and I will also think about getting the Atoms for Peace but I don't dig full on electronic Thom Yorke. I didn't like the Eraser at all, the live versions though from the tour with this Atoms For Peace band are pretty good, I have some bootlegs I am really into so if the mix is ok I might get it..

dressedindreams 03.07.2013 04:33 AM

you all need to hear the new Drones album, I See Seaweed.

I don't know how well known they are outside of Australia, but this new album is a masterpiece, and I think all sonic youth fans would love it

Who's number 13? Iron & Wine?

hirsute_biped 03.17.2013 04:12 PM

Looking forward to Black Sabbath's 13 in June, w/ 3/4 original lineup, all preliminary reports suggest a return-to-form raw 70's style album.

batreleaser 03.18.2013 05:41 PM

the new black sabbath will not be good. drunk old men with shaky hands looking for a pay day. Doom/stoner/slow metal has been done by a million other bands at this point some of whom have done it a lot better. Sabbath's influence looms large but I have no desire to hear new material.

Mortte Jousimo 03.19.2013 01:50 AM

Well, I think it´s stupid to say about anything it can´t be good before hearing a single note of it.

batreleaser 03.19.2013 07:57 AM

in this case im fairly certain. then again, i thought bowie was long down for the count and his new record is fantastic.

more good ones; inter arma "sky burial", purling hiss "water on mars", chelsea light moving, i think the new foxygen album is my favorite of this year at this point

batreleaser 03.19.2013 07:59 AM

oh and i really like kavinsky "outrun", maybe just because of the connections to Drive

pad_023 03.19.2013 10:10 AM

Gnod Chaudelande

A collection of 2 records they put out last year. This album is awesome, really heavy psychedelic maybe a little similar to White Hills, they must be great to see live.

who has done it better than the original Black Sabbath lineup did?

This.

There have been times where I've though 'hmm, I wanna hear something like Sabbath'. I listen to bands like Orange Goblin etc and at the end of it I think 'nah, I'll just put some Sabbath on'. Nobody does Sabbath better than Sabbath.

Ok, all right. I can see the two of us getting along pretty well.

Foxygen is great and their new album is so FUCKING infectious I think Im starting to pass it to my sexual partners. Is it me or does it sound like the perfect 21st century reinterpretation of The Kinks, late 60s Stones, and ... Shit, I don't know... something similar to but far better than Belle & Sebastian....?

Yeah, Im blown away by it. I forget about it when I try to think about my favorite records of the year.

Sleep. I love Black Sabbath, but i cant in good conscience support this reunion.

GravitySlips 03.22.2013 08:26 PM

Sleep are obviously great. A different animal from the original Sabbath though, though the influence is apparent.

If Sleep made a record as good as Master of Reality (or any of the first 5, really), then I must've missed it.

The reunion can fuck off, though. Not interested at all.

batreleaser 03.23.2013 10:17 PM

Agreed. I know I'll get shit for this but I go back to Holy Mountain more than any other Sabbath record. These days when it's Sabbath I listen to specific songs more than the full records.
