top non "proper" album songs and releases

i think there's a lot of people like myself who are only really familiar with the self titled to rather ripped side of sonic youth - and feel confused when it comes to all the side projects/collaborations/15,923rd thurston solo noise jam he recorded in his sleep last wednesday.

so what stuff do you think is worth investigating for those of us who like the poppier side but arent averse to giving the more freeform noise whatever stuff a go?

HECKLER SPRAY 06.18.2008 02:37 PM

Psychic Hearts maybe ?

Hmmm, perhaps some of their soundtrack stuff (Made In USA, Demonlover), its still noisy experimental loveliness but shorter, more varied tracks. I think alot of people who aren't used to it get bored/overwhelmed/threatened by a track thats over 8 minutes in length, so perhaps they should steer away from SYR initially. Certainly if I'd heard SYRs when i first heard Goo and Dirty i would have been so like totes wtf?, foresooth?

dim stars!

HECKLER SPRAY 06.18.2008 03:20 PM

Free Kitten !!!

Rob Instigator 06.18.2008 03:39 PM

any Free Kitten output is good stuff to check out.

thurston;s solo stuff, psychic hearts and trees ....academy are also good, though both vare different types of albums

Sonic Death is pretty fucking awesome, if that counts.

acousticrock87 06.18.2008 03:47 PM

Oh I didn't read the part about poppier stuff. Maybe it's awesome.

nicfit 06.18.2008 03:49 PM

Suburbia soundtrack

uhler 06.18.2008 03:49 PM

sonic death is poppy as hell. even more so than rather ripped.

xxlouiisxx 06.18.2008 04:08 PM

sonic death is pretty boring

Rob Instigator 06.18.2008 04:17 PM

not the backwards second side on the acssette!

live sonic always rules

ni'k 06.18.2008 04:25 PM

actually i should have made it more clear - ive heard all these releases. i meant stuff a bit more obscure than that- i wouldnt mind giving some of the solo noise stuff a go but theres so much of it

Rob Instigator 06.18.2008 04:31 PM

ahhhh! You gots to give us specifics!

acousticrock87 06.18.2008 04:31 PM

The best thing to do with a band like SY is to pick randomly. Taste varies way too much. Not everything they put out is good, but it's all good to someone. Just be spontaneous about it.

noisereductions 06.18.2008 04:34 PM

hurricane floyd

ni'k 06.18.2008 05:07 PM

ok - stuff thats like karen koltrane - stuff that might have more hooks than just random noise - or possibly unrandom noise my ears just cant understand yet -

whorefrost 06.18.2008 05:44 PM

Thurston Moore - Klangfarbenmelodie
Lee Ranaldo/Birchville Cat Motel - 30th December 2004
Lee Ranaldo - Amarillo Ramp

whorefrost 06.18.2008 08:16 PM

Also, the Bark Haze CD on Important would be good for testing the waters of improv/sonik skronk

ni'k 06.18.2008 08:17 PM

cheers. love amarillo ramp already
