Congratulations. You all officially have "really good" taste in music.

I'm "fed up" with feeding and clothing my family with my hard earned money and now want to start spending my money on listening to some new music. I might even venture out to some "concerts (gigs)" if I can.

The next stage is up to you all. Recommend some good new "music" to an old man out of touch with anything and everything that has happened in the music "world" in the last 5 years.

You are the only ones I can trust with this important task. If anybody else feels the need to recommend then feel free. The "ignore" facility is hugely underrated in my mind.

Sorry if I've forgotten anybody else who doesn't have shit taste in music.

_slavo_ 04.17.2012 05:01 AM

Thanks for the honour.

I don't really know what kind of music you're into, but i'd try and listen to Julia Holter's new album called "Ekstasis". It's somewhere in the realms of ambient folk with weird song structures and very fine female voice.

To level things out, I'd recommend trying Pharaoh Overlord's "Lunar Jetman". It's heavy, yet enternaining. Space/stoner rock from Finland. One of the top albums of 2012 for me so far.

Pookie 04.17.2012 05:14 AM

What an excellent start. I see good things coming from this thread.

To be honest I'm not really into any particular type of music. I've always liked a wide range of music but always liked listening to something new.

And quite frankly I'm boring myself with my music at the moment. If I do buy anything it's just always the same type of thing. I found myself looking forward to the new Doseone album but at the same time thinking there must be something way more interesting than that to spend my time and money on.

You and all the others I mentioned always talk about new interesting sounding music.

EVOLghost 04.17.2012 05:29 AM

LOL! Thanks. Uhhh you might have a change of heart after this post(about my "not shit" taste in music), but....lately, I've been just into k-pop and some j-pop(thanks to Ghostchase!)

That's my playlist for pop. Which is basically the list of groups that I've been exclusively listening to.

I'll get back to work now.

SonicBebs 04.17.2012 05:34 AM

the new One Direction album is amazing

Pookie 04.17.2012 05:57 AM

I forgot Nefeli!

Genteel Death 04.17.2012 05:59 AM

I know you like hardcore/punk, and I listen to tons of it, both the modern kind and from the past.

I'll make you some mixtapes (please send me your address via pm) and put them up for digital download.

In the meantime, here are some bands/records you might like.

CONDOMINIUM - Any of their singles (''Gag'' above all) and the ''Warm Home'' LP. I love the song ''Teeth'' in particular because it reminds me of both The Who and Husker Du but way more aggressive and tight than those two bands.

The now defunct DRUNKDRIVER - S/T is a great album but ''List of Profound Insecurities'', their collaboration with Mattin, I think packs in more punches and surprises for a hardcore band. Also, check out Veins, their ex-singer’s Michael Berdan current band.

BLUES CONTROL & LARAAJI's recent ''FRKWYS VOL.8'' is also pretty inspired, just like most music Blues Control are involved in. Not sure if you are familiar with Laraaji's records already. If you're not, do check out ''Celestial Vibration'' and ''Vision Songs’’. Celestial indeed.

Genteel Death 04.17.2012 02:39 PM

I'm making you a mixtape as well as coming up with a playlist for a DJ night in a Dalston pub and doing some artwork for my tape on TBR. This is how productive I am, really.

blunderbuss 04.17.2012 11:22 PM

Rock-wise, there's not an awful lot that's getting me excited these days, but The Men and Sunflare get big thumbs ups.

In a more poppy (Blondie / Shop Assistants) vein, Dum Dum Girls is cool - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52xJk2VA5Bw

I'm liking quite a lot of what the genre-namers are calling dub techno, especially BVDub and Echospace.

And finally, my current obsession, if you want to shuffle awkwardly from one foot to the other on the edge of a dancefloor, I highly recommend Astral Social Club's recent output, notably this: http://astralsocialclub.bigcartel.co...ct/happy-horse, and pretty much any of the "technoise" that gets a mention in this article: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1524.

Oh yeah, and I'm quite taken with Motion Sickness of Time Travel.

I'll try and get round to posting some youtube links some time.

Anyway, how's the family? May I remind you of the existence of this thread: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=8662

Murmer99 04.17.2012 11:30 PM

I'd recommend a few but I have horrible taste in music. Please forgive me and good luck getting in touch with everything around you!

Thanks for this and thanks in advance for the mixtape! I'll pm my address as soon as I find it.

I've been enjoying Get Drunk & Play Records as recommended by you.

That would be good but at the moment I have very little that would be worth putting on a mixtape. And I was rubbish at organising it anyway. And I can't record onto tapes at the moment!

The family are all really well. I was listening to some Steve Reich recently and it reminded me of our jaunt to see Steve Reich at 70 at the Barbican with porky. I remember talking about the imminent birth of my second child and now that second child is a galumphing 5 year old. Having children definitely makes time pass much more quickly.

I've never been massively taken with AMT. Tell me an indispensable album of their's and I'll check it out.

Glice 04.18.2012 11:50 AM

I'm struggling to think what to suggest. It's all jazz, classical and 'world' stuff round here of late, plus a lot of music by people I know.

I'll tell you what, the Bang the Bore 6 CD compilation (here) is well worth a punt - several hours of top quality stuff ranging from EAI, free improv, olde-timey noise, Psych, sound-art, folk-hybrid stuff, laptop squiddle - well worth a punt. And hopefully I'd say that even if I didn't have a vested interest.

One of the best things I've heard recently is an archive programme from BBC radio 1 of Andy Kershaw in Zimbabwe in 1988 - here. Really, seriously worth a listen, it's kind of touching and features loads of great soukous, which is always good.

Glice 04.18.2012 11:53 AM

Oh, and Hardcore Heaven from last year - apart from Joey Riot being SHIT now, it's one of the better Hardcore collections I've picked up of late.

blunderbuss 04.18.2012 01:23 PM

in all seriousness, some of you are the most boring people I've ever bothered to give my attention to, and the fact that there is such a thread honoring a miserable bunch only makes me want to kill myself even more. Thanks.

yeah, some horrible music posted on this thread.

We don't care. Did you not get it yet?

Murmer99 04.19.2012 05:15 AM

despite my lack of concern about whether anyone cares or not, it's nice to see that you can speak on the behalf of everyone else. "WE" don't care. Ok. Just further reinforces my point.

Genteel Death 04.19.2012 05:19 AM

Ok, now you know.

Murmer99 04.19.2012 05:20 AM

I'm just being a patronising cunt. It's my nature, did you not get it?

Genteel Death 04.19.2012 05:25 AM

Ok. You are a patronising cunt then.

Murmer99 04.19.2012 05:31 AM

Ok. And a noob, too. I joined two years ago instead of three, Goddamnit.

Glice 04.19.2012 11:29 AM

Don't think it's worth getting het up about it. Pookie's been here yonks and trusts the tastes of the people he named. Largely because they've also been here yonks, under various names.

['Yonks' is a British slang term meaning 'an indeterminate long time]

Bless you all. Not all of you obviously.

Tomorrow I have most of the day to myself so I'll listen to some of your recommendations whilst eating cakes.

Never mind the music, how were the cakes?

EVOLghost 04.23.2012 06:32 AM

In for some softer sounds? Ai Aso. Her album Chamomile Pool is beautiful.

here's one track from it.
