Bands that cover Sonic Youth

Signed or unsigned, member here or not. Know of any?

BootsyGraham 01.30.2009 01:25 AM

I got this cd a while ago, but I didn't find anything that blew me away.

scissor shock - skip tracer

atsonicpark 01.30.2009 01:30 AM

As far as that cd goes, racebannon did an excellent cover of death valley 69 but none of the other covers particularly impressed me. Also see their great cover of "electricity". They're not that good of a band, and their singer specifically annoys me (and somehow I've seen them live 4 times for whatever fucked up reason) but they do damn good covers.

Dead-Air 01.30.2009 02:17 AM

Seek out William Hooker's version of "Becuz". Absolute godhead.

Camper Van Beethoven's country version of "I Love Her All of the Time" is a classic.

Wixel's cdr of Sonic Youth covers is really cool mostly ambient versions of stuff. "Shadow of a Doubt" is actually still pretty rocking though, and may be my favorite of them.

repeater 01.30.2009 02:45 AM

Letīs not forget the wonderful "Halloween" by Mudoney

deflinus 01.30.2009 08:29 AM

cat power covering psychic hearts was pretty cool

1. Cat Power's cover of "Schizophrenia" is great.
2. Beck supposedly covered "The Diamond Sea" acoustically at some shows.
3. The String Quartet Tribute is quite nice.
4. What was William Hooker's "Becuz" on????????

SonicBebs 01.30.2009 03:48 PM

the go! team did Bull in the Heather which was ok

blunderbuss 01.30.2009 03:57 PM

Ladies Who Lunch (one of Lucious Jackson + one of The Breeders) did a 7" called Kims We Love, which included a cover of Bull In The Heather

The Blur guy, if it's who I'm thinking of, did Eliminator Jr. Beck I think has done Diamond Sea in some form or another. At Lollapalooza or something.

EDIT: Graham Coxon - Eliminator Jr.

Have you got it? Can you upload it? I'm still trying to get it myself. I played it (both versions) several times on the radio in Olympia years ago, and all I have is old cassettes of those radio shows. I'd love to have an mp3 as much as everyone else (at least until I can afford the record, which I've wanted for years).

blunderbuss 02.01.2009 02:31 AM

The lack of mention of these is a crime in certain states:

Mike Watt - Tough Gnarl
Rapeman - Kim Gordon's Panties

I have it somewhere... unless someone beats me to it I'll dig it out and rip/upload it somewhere in the next few days.

On topic, I don't think I've ever heard a SY cover that I really enjoyed.

was this a cover? ( I Never got the Rapeman album!)

blunderbuss 02.06.2009 11:20 AM

It wasn't a cover, but it contained elements of Schizophrenia, mainly lyrical.

noisereductions 02.08.2009 01:05 PM

I never knew that> I should get that record.

Derek 02.08.2009 01:21 PM

Yeah that Rapeman record is a very good slice of punk rock. Basically Big Black with live drums... but still very enjoyable!

Rob Instigator 02.08.2009 01:58 PM

yes

just got paid is fucking a great cover of zz top on that rapeman too
