John Zorn And Thurston Moore: “@” [#7643]

Screeches, Scratches, Knocks, Bangs, Explosions and Howls in the Night! “@” is a fabulous studio recording of duo improvisations from two downtown masters, each responsible for some of the most dynamic music ever to come out of downtown NY. Both long-time supporters of extreme music and proponents of free improvisation, John and Thurston are brilliant improvisers and have worked with everyone from Derek Bailey, Milford Graves and Evan Parker to Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith, Han Bennink and beyond. Exhibiting a deep musical connection, they come together here for the first time to create a fabulous program of varied and powerful duo improvisations. “@” presents the community of NY’s Downtown scene at its collaborative best.

Have any of the SY crew ever done anything with Zorn before, live or recorded?

Thurston Moore certainly has performed with John Zorn in recent times. He was part of the line-up for the 2011 Annual End of the Year Improv Party, and played with John Zorn and Sylvie Courvoisier. There's a brief excerpt on youboob:

More action by the duo of Moore & Zorn in this video (recorded at Le Poisson Rouge, in 2012):

There's a new Caught On Tape release currently in the works, judging by a post by Sonelab Studios on facemook:

(J) after a week recording in NYC, I back at the lab with Caught On Tape tracking some amazing improvs. If you haven't heard of them, look 'me up! (Note the huge monolith of gear at the end of my console, too!)

Further update, from Thurston's Chelsea Light Moving facemook (I mean, it must be about this):

tm and moloney cut new 'caught on tape' lp (straight jacket) for northern spy today.
Tomorrow Chelsea Light Moving cut 3 new jams for forthcoming 12" maxi

Picked up the new Kim Gordon record from White Columns, "Walks with Men". It's pretty sweet. They were selling regular and signed editions for $20/$100. There were also T-shirts for the Design Office art show.

According to Rockdelux, a new book on Sonic Youth, "Estragos de una Juventud Sónica", by Ignacio Julià, is just right about to be released (Thanks to sergisonic for the heads-up):

Also, I thought this should be mentioned: Whereas Tzadik has not made it available yet, Orkhestra from France apparently is now taking pre-orders for John Zorn & Thurston Moore's "@" already (which means it's very likely just around the corner):

Most places are showing this as released on 30th September (although the date is still TBA on Tzadik).

This release seems to be going largely unnoticed. Are any copies finding their way into shops or online stores?

As far as I know it's only available from White Columns. No online ordering that I know of.

You're welcome! the book is really excellent, Ignacio Julià is the co-author of highly recommended 'I dreamed of noise' book, too.

His last book was the excellent deluxe reedition 'Feed back: The Velvet Underground, legend and truth'

Take a look (pictures, with Thurston holding up a VU & Nico LP)
