Shooting at Virginia Tech campus

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/16/vte...ing/index.html

on a personal note, my nephew just got accepted to this school.

jennthebenn 04.16.2007 12:05 PM

now reporting at least 22 dead. crazed.

jon boy 04.16.2007 12:06 PM

another reason why guns should be illegal.

Rob Instigator 04.16.2007 12:15 PM

This was crazy to read about. they say 22 dead and over 20 more injured. Insane. The shooter is dead, according to police.
The problem in all this is not guns or weapons or firearms per se, but the inherent lack of respect and care and sense of the worth of human life. People that do this are socipaths. They do not feel guilt, for whatever reason, for their actions,a nd they do not feel remorse at killing an innocent human. Life means nothing to them.
we, the USA, are breeding 90% of the world's sociopaths. something in our culture breeds this. We have more serial killers, mass murderes, etc than the rest of the world put together.

what a horrible way to start the school day. 7:15 AM.

I agree.

if they were to actually outlaw guns, only the people that fully intend to break the law will be able to get them. getting a stolen gun takes no time at all if you know the right (wrong) people.

jon boy 04.16.2007 12:45 PM

to me it seems a pretty pointless argument. ban sociopaths, people will get them anyway etc.

true people will be able to get them i not saying they wont but what about kids finding there parents guns etc.

i remember when hurricane katrina happened and people were shooting back then.

jon boy 04.16.2007 12:51 PM

what is americas fascination with guns?

that is just a question not an accusation as some will have it.

ALIEN ANAL 04.16.2007 12:53 PM

is their footage of this? like in school cams?

29 people? Surely the only thing that can carry out an attack of this nature is a gun. Apparently he lined them up in a classroom and shot them excecution style, surely anything that makes carrying out something like this easier is indefensible.

screamingskull 04.16.2007 12:56 PM

21 dead, 22 being treated in hospital, it happened on two different dorms. Fucking Crazy,

CNN are calling it the deadliest school shooting in american history!

OUTLAW GUNS FFS!
I know what you mean though, theres not much chance it would ever happen. This whole "guns dont kill people, people do" thing is just ridiculous. Of course people kill people, but people kill MORE people MORE easily with a gun. Its all about the distancing effect a gun has, its a million times easier to shoot someone in the head than beat them to death or stab them, not just physically but psychologically.

(CNN) -- A lone gunman is dead after police said he killed at least 21 people Monday during twin shootings on the Virginia Tech campus -- the worst school shooting incident in U.S. history.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said during a news conference in Blacksburg.

Police believe there was only one gunman, Flinchum said.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)

The shootings mark the deadliest school shooting incident in U.S. history, topping attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966.

The Associated Press quoted officials saying more than 20 people were wounded. A hospital spokeswoman told AP that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in nearby Christiansburg, Virginia, told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene )

The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a four-story coed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Student reports 'mayhem'

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs )

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top-story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its more than 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

Last August, the first day of classes was cut short by a manhunt after an escaped prisoner was accused of killing a security guard at a Blacksburg hospital and a sheriff's deputy.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said. (Watch the police chief explain where bodies were found )

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

Before Monday, the deadliest school shootings came in 1966 and 1999.

In the former, Charles Joseph Whitman, a 25-year-old ex-Marine, killed 13 people on the University of Texas campus. He was killed by police.

In 1999, 17-year-old Dylan Klebold and 18-year-old Eric Harris -- armed with guns and pipe bombs -- killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves.

well, those things happen in places that dont have the easily available guns too. Those things happen where i was brought up, but as i say, pulling a trigger is very easy psychologically, you have to be pretty messed up to be able to kill someone using your bare hands or a sharp/blunt instrument, but anyone can pull a trigger. You sound pretty scared, if i may say.

floatingslowly 04.16.2007 01:11 PM

if they outlawed media attention of these things....the crime rate would go down.

not that I agree one bit with limiting the "free" press, but attention-seekers are always have the bar pushed further and further toward attrocity.

shooting up a school is the new way to reach Valhalla for the insane.

screamingskull 04.16.2007 01:17 PM

BBC's saying it's 32 now!!

SynthethicalY 04.16.2007 01:18 PM

Wow which one is right, we won't know till tomorrow.

screamingskull 04.16.2007 01:18 PM

The families and other students only thought it was 1 dead and 1 injured until the campus had a meeting and announced it was 20 dead, and you should see the footage of him saying that there was 20 dead and the reactions of the people watching.

lots of countries have many social pressure on people.. for example in the eastern europe are poor countries and there is a huge unemployment and low education. and they don't shoot in schools..

screamingskull 04.16.2007 01:19 PM

Apparently the shooter was a asian man in a black leather jacket, they don't know if he was a student yet.

In that case you are insane:). I dont know what id do in that situation, thats another matter though, when someone comes into your house, what rights do they forfeit. But they could just be a stupid kid who made a bad decision, and if you could maime them for life or kill them then youd have to live with it.

No but do many countries have social pressure, from your peers to be a certain way, from your friends, your family, the media, goverment, I mean if you would live here in the US people have so much pressure coming from all directions. Let's say something bad happened to you, it is still the same puritan belief(which hasn't left this country at all), it just mean that if you did something bad, god or some entity is punishing you. I mean I don't know how it works in Europe, but the US works this way.

Self-defence is self-defence. Whichever gun you are using has the potential of being lethal for the intruder.

A lot of things are wrong with America. The last school shooting I remember was the one in Tacoma, WA early this year. I was shocked because I know someone from there.

Then before that there was that shooting in the Amish school...
