Scotland to secede from UK?

I don't know a lot about this issue, but am curious what the Scotsmen of SYG think. Obviously a momentous decision, and apparantly could go either way. Has anyone interviewed Mogwai about it?

_tunic_ 09.14.2014 04:51 PM

they are in the Yes camp according to this article

This seems like one of there really great "feel good" political decisions that may have the kind of economic ramifications that inevitably make a lot of people feel really bad about it. To be sure, if that is what Scotland wants they should do it, and "Empires" in the 21st century seem like an anachronism to say the least, but smart economics are smart economics and I'm not sure Scotland is in a position to fend as well solo as they did as part of the United Kingdom.

really? seems everywhere like it's a close call and nobody knows for sure.

NATO doesn't really want this so i'd expect some tampering in the name of "global security." the british nuclear fleet is based in scotland so this isn't just some castles the queen would have to give up.

anyone here ever watch costa gavras's "Z"?

Derek 09.15.2014 11:33 AM

hi. i am a strong yes voter, as anyone here with left leaning politics should be.

LifeDistortion 09.15.2014 02:11 PM

If Scotland isn't indépendant then why the hell did I watch "Braveheart"? I did like that clip that The Simpsons put out with Groundskeeper Willie.

maybe canada will follow their example and get away from the queen too. i don't want to see her face everywhere unless i'm on vacation in england or something(not to say that england should keep bowing down to this silly family either)

Not so. Those I know think a united working class is more important than Salmond's view of independence.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.16.2014 02:13 PM

Get away from the Queen? I understand that even if Scotland secedes they are still going to have the Queen as the official Head of State..

Pookie 09.16.2014 02:25 PM

As do 16 other countries.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.16.2014 02:35 PM

Yes, I get that, its how the Commonwealth works, shit she is still nominally titled "the Queen of Jamaica" but some Scots seem to be a bit more pissed off in their drive for secession so it seems almost quaint that even after independence they'd more or less keep the Queen around ;)

Scotland's economy has more in common with that of Ireland and Portugal at the start of this century, when both countries' economies seemed to flourish and progressively improve in competitiveness. The yes or no vote to me has more to do with deciding on which financial pact to anchor yourself to when it comes to the two mainstays of financial matters in this part of the world, mainland Europe or the London- dominated UK version. The Queen herself is still safe and certainly not bothered by the outcome unless some peasant manages to sneak into her Holyroodhouse residence and strangle her. One thing the growing of a country’s economy can’t stop now is that in order to keep up the pace their working class need to grow in numbers, so it really doesn't matter to most of us anyway if the vote is yes or no. It’s only going to make the life of the average Scot worse if they’re poor and a bit worse if they are on the way to get better. It may placate a few shouts but ultimately it won’t change much in terms of people remaining poor and hungry and pissed off.

i thought that at international level england is the upper class and scotland its servant-- or its cash cow.

is this all about oil revenue or is it also about something else though? i'm curious to know.

the american media (e.g. the washington post) obviously has a very pro-union stance. e.g., in today's front page: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/...92f_story.html

speaking of the UK I found this shit recommended online from a website in the UK for some bird shit etching on the paint of my car (I know, I totally should have washed it off right away but I was exhausted from working all day with the flu on 4 hours of sleep from being up too late doing homework for university) and motherfucking shit it actually worked!!

it was the price of a fucking carwash and SAVED my fucking fender from two huge bombs of shit that totally fucking made obnoxious and depressing etchings..

it's about a lot of things. we are consistently governed by a right wing government when the majority of people here are left leaning, as the english middle class outweigh our vote. our left wing party labour has also been a centrist party since tony blair since they also need to cater to the right wing middle classes, so we are left unrepresented and totally disenfranchised. england is also slowly privatising public services and it will soon be too much of a burden for us to have things like the nhs and low tuition fees as england falls further away from such things.

i'm voting yes because i'm a young student who has trouble finding work and has absolutely zero hope for the future. independence won't be perfect but we need something other than the status quo and independence is rich in opportunity that westminster doesn't provide.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.16.2014 09:56 PM

I understand Scotland makes it money doing a lot of international banking while also selling oil, electricity, and off-shore fishing licensing.. Those are short-term commodities which may not last beyond a few decades so IF Scotland secedes it would be wise to remain in a very friendly and close relationship with Britain as a major trade partner?

Now, if Scotland remains in the Commonwealth, is this all just really much to do about nothing?
