Why Syr3,6,7 & 8 are e.p:s and 9 isnīt?

I think this is a question to Chris, but if someone else could explain, I will be glad. Of course this is not very important, but I am just person who is interested about details. So is it just that unlogical world of Sonic Youth that I like a lot or is there some reason? Is it just because SYR 1 is about 20 minutes, so almost all the rests are e.p:s (SYR 2 is already almost half an hour and the rest are at least 40 minutes long). Or is it the number of songs (there is two to three "songs" in the rest of the SYR`s but more in the SYR9). Or is the reason price (maybe some retailers wouldnīt have been selling them so cheap, if they were named lp:s)? If somebody knows, tell me please.

I consider only one (SYR1)--two at most (i.e., SYR2)--of the SYR titles to be EPs.

Where is the distinction you're referring to being made? I know on my site, I classified 9 in the soundtrack section* - the rest, I guess it was just the amount of tracks qualified them as "EPs" in my mind, though I guess I didn't put the 2-track "Sonic Death" under EPs, so who needs consistency?

*Huh, just checked my site - it's indeed under albums, which seems kind of stupid. Then again, "Made in USA" is under albums too, so I guess my train of thought was that as a sole Sonic Youth release, it belonged more under albums than soundtracks, where-as something like Demonlover is not entirely SY? Consistency...

I donīt think itīs just in your mind, because when I ordered SYR 1, 3 and 7, my retailer said theyīre e.p:s. And he also said SYR 5 is double-e.p! And he got his information from his wholesale. I also remembered thereīs some review in your sites from SYR3 where somebody is wondering why SYRS are still calling EP:s. So I think this comes also from SY-members.

Well, I donīt need consistency, I am just curious.

As far as I'm concerned, discographical consistency with their catalog went out the window when they tried to pass the first EP off as a "mini-LP"...it pains me to no end to list it under "ALBUMS" on the site.

I can see where you're coming from. The idea of calling something like SYR3--which clocks in at over 50 minutes, I believe--an EP seems ludicrous in light of the fact that many old LPs by The Who, The Electric Prunes, MC5, The Misfits, etc only clocked in at 25 to 30 minutes.
