Kool Thing

It's the quintessential Sonic Youth song. It represents them in the height of their glory...They had passed through the mire of such badly made albums as Sister and finally started making albums that were more catchy and well-produced. They should have gone even more "pop" oriented after that.

Daycare Nation 06.11.2006 02:16 PM

No, I haven't heard all of it...But yeah, what I heard totally rawks! I can't wait to declare that it's better than everything else they've ever done. I also love the cover art.

Daycare Nation 06.11.2006 02:21 PM

You would be in the majority then, along with the other sadly mistaken folks on here.

king_buzzo 06.11.2006 02:22 PM

yes kool thing is amazing

I got red rep from the commie bastards for saying that. Better watch out.

PunkerViolence 06.11.2006 02:30 PM

HaydenAsche 06.11.2006 02:43 PM

Kool Thing isn't a very good song.

finding nobody 06.11.2006 02:45 PM

i love the song, and the album. but why does sonic youth spell like pre-schoolers?

I like the video...and that guitar part that repeats after the section where Chuck D says "let everybody know." It makes me want to go into a mosh pit, go crazy and knock saturnine and assblaster down on the ground again and again.

HaydenAsche 06.11.2006 02:47 PM

Haha. Saturnine is a bizdill.

hah! it's true. but this is just one of the many examples of how they cant spell. here's some more
tuff gnarl, becuz, self-obsessed and sexee, master-dik.. just to name a few

PunkerViolence 06.11.2006 02:52 PM

Just a different way of spelling, still pronounces the same word...

acousticrock87 06.11.2006 02:55 PM

I like Kool Thing, but My Friend Goo is one of my least favorite SY songs. I'm not sure why.

Savage Clone 06.11.2006 03:08 PM

Mote is the only song on that album that I like.

Magic Wheel Memory 06.11.2006 03:24 PM

Kool Thing is great, but I think Schizophrenia is the quintessential SY tune. Not necessarily the best, but if I could play only one song for someone to show them what SY is about, that would be the one. It incorporates so much of what makes them a great band: dissonance, unusual composition, dense, blurry chordal riffing, soft, beautiful harmonics and both Thurston and Kim on vocals.

noisemachine 06.11.2006 03:26 PM

I would say the quintessential SY tune is Teenage Riot. Its probably the song theyre most well known for (among non-fans, at least) and its probably the song they play most often at their shows.

king_buzzo 06.11.2006 03:42 PM

i loooooooove kool thing live

noisemachine 06.11.2006 03:53 PM

sadly enough, in the two times ive seen them, they never played kool thing. I know a lot of the people here are sick of seeing it live, but i really hope they play it this time around.

screamingskull 06.11.2006 03:56 PM

if there is one song that sums up sonic youth in my mind then that would have to be sugar cane. i don't know why its one of the first songs that i ever heard by them and i really love it.
