autechre - exai

anyone on here a fan?

an absolute fucking trip, certainly one of the better records Ae have ever released. it can be seen as a culmination of their post-2000s work: the knotty, subtle rhythmic pulses of Confield; the somewhat organic electronics of Draft 7.30; the full-on aural assault beatwork of Untilted; Quaristice's collage-like feel; and Oversteps' beautifully intricate and intimate atmospherics. its closest counterpart though would probably be Gantz Graf, just total (structured) annihilation.

conversely, it's their most unified record sound-wise. the record as a whole is tied together by this fucking monolithic low-end, certainly the bassiest and most percussive record ae have ever done, much of it borders on hip-hop at points.

the most accessible Ae LP in ages, probably their most instantly gratifying since Chiastic Slide, but it is still imbued with their signature abstruseness.

this bastard will destroy live, mark my fucking words.

He'll yes I'm a fan, but I haven't kept track of them in a few years. Oversteps was the last album I knew about.

I will have to look into this ASAP.

it's not traditional hip-hop, no, due to the warped (hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa), amorphous nature of the beats but they are imbued with a similar sensibility.

pad_023 02.18.2013 01:36 PM

Listened once, really dug the first side especially the track bladelores but man this is a long record. Think i'll be dividing it up into listening sessions next time I listen.

Diesel 02.19.2013 02:36 PM

Sounds like they've just dangled a bone above a synth and teased a dog into jumping on the keys randomly. Then they press play on their random beat making machines/plugins and there you have it: a modern day Autechre song.

I thought you did the same?

Diesel 02.19.2013 03:01 PM

These days I just take a massive dump on the keys and hey presto!

Genteel Death 02.19.2013 03:11 PM

can i hear some of that shit?

Diesel 02.19.2013 03:36 PM

Semi-retired. I'm still trying to put something together and still have the file you sent forever ago. I've been sidetracked by other rubbish time consuming addiction things.

stellar album. it's unusual for an act to be putting out fresh material like this after decades of constant, varied output.

Severian 03.09.2013 11:48 AM

I have been playing this album pretty consistently over the past week or so, and I think it's excellent. Probably the best album I've heard in the greater genre since Mouse on Mars delivered their one-two punch in 2012.

new record incoming soon I gather

Severian 05.15.2016 07:29 PM

Yeah, let's fucking hope so. "Feed 1" is just a crazy ass, insane, beautiful ambient mess. I love it! The beat just never quite catches up to anything. It sounds a bit like Cities Aviv or some shit that's been ducked in the ads and thrown into a blender!

[EDIT: Haha, "ducked in the ads" ... obviously I intended to type something very different, but I like "ducked in the ads," so we'll stick with that.]

more nasty new ae debuted on alaskan radio this morning https://soundcloud.com/warp-records/...wsua-radio-rip

features some ideas explored on in sets from the last couple of years, so unsure as to whether it's another ae_live drop or a proper record with motifs derived from the sets a la quaristice/versions/quadrange. exciting nonetheless, remarkable how they're still so far ahead of the game

Severian 05.19.2016 08:30 PM

Holy shit, new Autechre album out NOW?!

whatever. blunts, acid tabs and shrooms.

selkcip 05.22.2016 02:39 PM

sharp, ultra-crystalline sound shapes materialising in the room.. stilted rhythms and wild, shuddering reverb. it's got synesthetic qualities, and melody. this is some of the finest sound art available nowadays

Agreed. But I've only listened to part 1. Have you hear the whole thing?

Who the fuck releases what essentially amounts to FIVE new albums at once? This is fucking crazy. But I love it.

Somebody who makes albums by pressing go on a random sequence generator.

Aren't you the guy who oncr said that every time you clicked on a link I recommended you stopped paying attention immediately because all you heard was bleep/bloop/synth?

What the hell are you even doing in an Autechre thread?!

You said you always hold onto hope that it won't be some "electronic garbage"'or whatever, and are always disappointed. Well, if you don't know Autechre, your head's missing. Stop your trolling, you whiny little toilet.

I don't think I would have said that, I might have said something about you enjoying the sound of your own typing though.
I liked Autechre, LP5 and bascadet in particular. But they lost the plot big time with Confield,

SYRFox 05.28.2016 05:35 AM

Confield's my favourite Autechre album

selkcip 05.31.2016 04:34 PM

Draft 7.30 is a big favorite.. honing the unearthly textures, and approximating the sonic characteristics of a wooden sea vessel (Xylin Room)

guest 06.01.2016 08:52 AM

I do sort of miss that approach they were applying into the early-mid 00s where there was something more architectural to their sound, I guess? as if they were working with similar sounds/melodic structures/constructions but testing them texturally and through the prism of different spatial concepts, obviously reaching a peak in draft (untilted with a very dry, live sound, confield something slightly more evasive in description but hitting that distinction between hyper-mechanical and striking naturalism). the recent output (oversteps and thereafter) seems quite insular, like they've worked out what they want to be doing and are burrowing deeper and deeper into that. they've achieved the sound and are now rolling all these different angles together into a hulking mass; similar atmospheres but progressively eradicating the notions of structure and overall presentation. they seem to be at the end of their trajectory and know exactly what they're doing and have the means of achieving it, like the last 25 years have been a process of discovery and they've finally worked out how to distill their collaboration into discrete parts. magnificent to watch them going at it the way they are right now.

I managed about 40 seconds before skipping through and finally turning off. meh.

Anvil Vapre EP was the pinnacle for me, well half of it....all of two songs.

^ this.

Really though, I love it. I love Elseq. I'm not sure I prefer it to Exai necessarily, but I don't think the comparison really needs to be made. It's very much its own thing.

The NTS Sessions say hi.

Thanks for reminding me to listen to Exai again. I like them, but struggle to recall most albums in my mind.

The best thing AE have ever released is the Anti EP, but I also love Amber* and AE_LIVE.

*Thanks a lot, free Internet Archive downloads.

choc e-Claire 10.24.2018 12:28 AM

Okay, I'm relistening to Exai and it is phenomenal.
