I would love to ask him if Siamese Dream RAWKS or not.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 01:18 AM

Not to mention Kim produced one of Hole's albums!

...Hole, Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney, and L7 are all bands I'd file under "nothing special" though each one has songs I REALLY like. I'd say Bikini Kill is the best of those bands, if only for that one song that goes "AIN'T GOT NO CANDY FOR YOU!" not to mention that song about the guy who died of AIDS or whatever.

uhler 02.26.2009 01:58 AM

i like "live through this", but bikini kill blows both hole and shit 7 out of the water. even if i didn't agree with most of what bikini kill have said (and that tobi vail is my rock and roll crush), i would still think that way. sleater kinney are filed under "ok band, but their past bands were so much better."

nancykitten 02.26.2009 04:23 AM

On the contrary, I always hated Bikini Kill. But I hate that poser Kathleen Hanna, so maybe that's why. Live Through This was a record that meant a hell of a lot to me when I was younger, but everything else Hole did fell short (Beautiful Son a notable exception). L7 were fun but nothing special. Sleater-Kinney are one of the most overrated bands ever.

Sonic Youth and Courtney had a falling out in the mid-90's. Up until then they liked one other. I think it might have been over Courtney punching Hanna's lights out at that Lollapalooza.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 04:26 AM

Haha. Hanna is the worst person ever. Courtney is a close second though.

blunderbuss 02.26.2009 04:31 AM

I think there was more to SY and CL falling out than KH getting hit, although it suits CL for it to be about that because it's something she can blame on someone else. Reading the Lollapalloza tour diaries, SY became progressively more tired with CL's primadonna behaviour as the circus moved from town to town.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 04:36 AM

SY are just mad because Courtney never returned Kim's thongs.

Before Courtney punched Kathleen Hanna, did she say, "Someday you will ache like I ache... and that day is today!!" *bam*

i wouldn't say courtney punched her lights out. more like a sucker punch. but yeah, i agree that kathleen hanna is pretty damn annoying.

Have any of you guys heard The Hot Rock by Sleater-Kinney? I love their other albums but the Hot Rock is at another level. Even if you're not a fan of them, if you like Sonic Youth, you probably will dig it.

Getting back to SY and Albini-I'm from the Chicago area and was at the show that was recorded and released as 'Hold that Tiger'. Here's my take on the relationship based on what I know. The show was at the Cabaret Metro which was a popular place for punk bands to play in the '80s. SY had played there the year before on the EVOL tour and possibly on earlier tours. Albini didn't like the way things were run there and/or didn't like the owner Joe Shanahan and he said so to great extreme in an interview in a local 'zine which I believe was called Wholesome(I still have a copy somewhere). This resulted in him being banned from the Metro. I was very surprised to see him walk out on stage and introduce the band(Richard Kern and Blacksnake-the kings of cough syrup--let's start ROCKING!!!!!!!) I remember SY and Albini as friends back then and I assumed that they used their "clout" to get him in there for the intro and to watch the show. I also thought that the 4 song Ramones encore was for him because he's such a Ramones fan. I'm pretty sure that any other Ramones encores were only 2 songs.

radarmaker 08.25.2009 06:32 PM

Heh, nice. Guess that explains the "No-one is more surprised to be here than me..." intro :)

Here's some stuff:

Quote:

Impose Magazine: Sonic Youth
Steve Albini: Durable. Very durable band. Seems like they’ve been around forever.

Quote:

How do you feel about the route that the eighties band took. Steve Albini: A lot of them, in my opinion, have given up the very qualities that made them distinctive in the first place. The Swans, for example, when from being one of the most Monolithic, Powerful bands in the world to being a maudlin cabaret. I haven't heard a Swans record that i liked in a long time. Sonic Youth, are a really sad story, because they were an amazing band during a period of their existence, and that was a very poorly documented period. From their very beginning to the period that they released EVOL, that era of the band was enormously infuential, I think they really covered a lot of ground, the distance that they have gone since then has been a very small distance indeed. Basically refined a very few notions and turned some of them into downright parodies and their current tack is very insubstantial. They are pretending to an extent that they are still the band they were seven or eight years ago and the way that they do that is by sort of presenting themselves as a more lighthearted jocular version of themselves with their tongue in their cheeks they are slowly dismantling their reason to exist. They still occassionaly write a good song, to use terms that they would appreciate, there is an occassional that you listen to and think that that is a pleasant enough song but they don't ever have the sort of spellbinding, scare the shit out of you quality that they used to.

Basically, Steve likes ultra-RAWK stuff. I know a few people in Chicago who hate his guts and say he's not/never was representative of the true "scene" or whatever goes on out there. Speaking of Chicago.. Is it true that Jim was booed by some people when he first played with SY in Chicago? I think playa-hating like that is dumb.
