One band/artist you feel weird for never having picked up on

Notice I didn't say guilty. I don't believe in guilt when it comes to appreciating things like music, art, and literature. But you know, what do you think it's weird that you've never listened much to or added to your collection? For me, it's the Smiths. I finally bought my first Smiths record last year, Strangeways, and while I thought it was okay, it didn't exactly light my fire. Similarly, I've listened to parts of the debut and Queen is Dead and just kind of went, meh. But I keep hearing how great those albums are, and I look at my collection and wonder why I don't have them.

How about you?

shellac

Rob Instigator 08.27.2008 05:53 PM

I own no radiohead

gmku 08.27.2008 05:56 PM

*gasp*

What is worse, then? No Radiohead, or no Smiths? A toss-up?

EMMAh 08.27.2008 06:00 PM

I'll have to think about it.

gmku 08.27.2008 06:05 PM

don't think too much on it. tell us the first thing that comes to your mind.

Rob Instigator 08.27.2008 06:06 PM

everyone has told me that radiohead would be right up my alley for years and years and years but I hate when people for whom radiohead is the weirdest band they listen to tell me what they think I will like.

stupid I know.

gmku 08.27.2008 06:09 PM

Radiohead is rather "normal" compared to a lot of my favorites, but I still think they're pretty good.

Nothing comes right to mind.

I've thought about this before though, so I know there are several bands.

Danny Himself 08.27.2008 06:17 PM

'essential' bands that i find boring or clichéd but people always tell me i'd like

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 08.27.2008 06:19 PM

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin

I think it's good that we don't automatically "get" the "essential" bands just because we think we should. Nothing wrong with not liking the Stones or Beatles or Radiohead or anybody if you don't really feel them.

pantophobia 08.27.2008 07:05 PM

unwound, for whatever reason put off checking them out for such a long time, but after listening to new plastic ideas i feel like a fool foro waiting so long

gmku 08.27.2008 07:16 PM

Sometimes it's like that.

Agreed, everyone rates them as being the greatest fucking thing ever, I find them totally boring. In a way, because EVERYONE tells me I should like them, I'm reluctant to even give them a proper chance.

cars_willkillyou 08.27.2008 08:55 PM

i never really liked the stones either. Or the smiths.

And i cant stand guns n roses.

a lot of my friends are into portishead though, and i just cannot get into them at all.

and while I respect Bjork, i cannot listen to her music and enjoy it.

Sonic Youth 37 08.27.2008 09:00 PM

Frank Zappa.

batreleaser 08.27.2008 09:01 PM

the cure, fugazi (i love the arguement, but have never been obsessive over them like a lot of people i know), sleater kinney, the yardbirds, probably lots more.
