Japanoise Appreciation Thread

Nobody does it better.

Merzbow, Boris, Gerogerigegege, Corrupted, CCCC....just for starters.

It's pure and clean, innit?

Discuss.

summer 05.23.2009 12:17 AM

I tried listening to Merzbow. It was shit. I love Boris though but.. they're rock music? Are those other three more similar to Boris or Merzbow?

IMHO, the 5 that I listed are all unique and quite different from one another. Perhaps we shall investigate/discuss this much further.

Boris...yeah....maybe "noise rock" or "superdoooooom"....I dunno.....labels labels labels. Absolutego, imho, is one of the all time greatest recordings ever made.

PS: I love Merz. We must agree to disagree on "it was shit".

summer 05.23.2009 12:37 AM

Hmmmmm I'll check out all three of them then. I like Absolutego, it's nice to sleep to haha

I have a 4cd CCCC box. Oh how I adore it. Gerog and Corrupted are definitely mysterious. Some of their work is very quiet / ambient / found / natural / field noise....but Noise all the same. Noise need not always be "intense".

Oh God...kill me now....I did not mention Incapacitants, Hijokaidan, Acid Mothers, Hanatarash, Fushitsusha.....5 others whom I adore.....and again, all unique.

Skuj 05.23.2009 12:47 AM

Absolutego makes me think of a Diplodocus stuck in a tar pit. Cavemen come and throw spears at it. It dies. Eventually.

otearai 05.23.2009 02:11 AM

i love cccc.
it'll be nice to mention pain jerk and his so dynamic noise.
gomikawa fumio consisting the members from incapasitants and pain jerk.
junko herself - a challange with her screams.

Hanatarash.

The Earl Of Slander 05.23.2009 05:03 AM

This thread has gone on too long without mentioning my very favourite Japanoise king, Keiji Haino! For shame!

It's difficult to mention a specific release by him, because he's possibly the most eclectic musician ever. Plays like 40 fucking instruments. That said, my constantly hyped favourite is Affection:

Although only turns into noise rock by any stretch of the term at about 20 minutes in, having been quite and haunting up until then. Keeps switiching between the two extremes. But he's got some of the best "proper" noise stuff out there too. The Merzbow collaboration is actually pretty great...

Hence this thread.

Yeah, Keiji Haino (sp?) is God. I have a couple of his lengthy meditations.

Aube, anyone?

I do adore Acid Mothers. Their prolificness must not be equated with garbage. I love the attitude and energy. I want to hang out with them. Always.

Glice 05.23.2009 11:24 AM

I've really gone off noise the last few years, but I used to be quite heavily into it when I was a teenager. When I was into it, I found Aube quite insipid. Every now and then I get the urge to listen to Frequency LSD, but I don't really care for noise these days. I'm not saying the genre's bad, it's just not for me right now. I will say though, the Japs do do it better than the Yanks (and definitely better than the Brits).

I quite like that noise is quickly becoming a global enterprise - there's noise coming from China, Africa, Russia, most of Europe, South America, Australasia. That's not to say that it's all good, but it's nice that it's not another Anglo-American dominated thing (maybe it was always thus?)

[Sandbag] 05.23.2009 11:36 AM

'there's more than merzbow in japnoise, you know, but not much more'
:P

demonrail666 05.23.2009 11:52 AM

I've not listened to that much but haven't really liked what I've heard. I do find it really interesting though and I'm convinced that there's more to it than I've sampled (some Guitar Wolf (which I just thought was pointless) Boredoms (I liked Vision Creation Newsun when i first heard it but got bored with it almost immediately afterwards) and a few snippets of other artists off of Youtube). I'll be reading this thread with interest though, hoping to be introduced to other stuff.

atsonicpark 05.23.2009 07:46 PM

guitar wolf rules. It's not... Japanoise, but...

You may be the Earl of Slander, but you are also the Duke of Knowing Great Japanese Noise Musicians....

ok, that was stupid, but you are right, Haino must be mentioned...

eX-Girl!

batreleaser 05.27.2009 02:28 PM

half the bands named in this thead arent remotely noise.

with that said, my five japanese real noise artists are incapacitants, solmania, controlled bleeding, hijokaidan, and violent onsen geisha.

batreleaser 05.27.2009 02:31 PM

its pretty easy to tell when people have read about noise on wikipedia once and decided they love and know the genre.

japanese music in general is just great, their genres tend to be really fucked up, noisy, and sometimes artsier versions of thier western counterparts. when the us was still freaking to hendrix and all that great heavy psych, japan had already birthed les rallizes denudes, a band that blurred the line between avant composition techniques and scorching western psychedelic rock. japanese hardcore was basically noise but played in standard punk rock lineups; confuse, g.i.s.m., z, gai, etc... even thier free jazz, with stuff like kaoru abe, took the noisyness of ayler and just freaked it out of space.

Keeping It Simple 05.27.2009 02:32 PM

One of those guys has a bullet belt for a necklace! If I wore one of them, I'd get arrested!

Ahem, this might come as a surprise to the most-certainly-not-japanese Paul Lemos...

Glice 05.27.2009 04:35 PM

Where did you read that Melly, a record sleeve or something?

It really is almost impressive the amount of utter shite you spout.

batreleaser 05.27.2009 04:48 PM

oh?

Glice 05.27.2009 04:55 PM

Well, LRD are doo-wop basslines with excessive solos. Not much avant-composition about that, unless you know precisely fuck all about 'avant-composition'.

batreleaser 05.27.2009 06:13 PM

well yeah sure i agree with you, but i mean they had serious ties with avant garde theater groups, so certainly not avant-compositions but they definitely had rooting thier. ive always thought thats what made them special, thier wierd and artsy psych band that still fucking rocks like few bands ive ever heard.

fugazifan 05.27.2009 06:35 PM

you gave the example of hendrix as if he were the only one around in the late 60s. im pretty sure that the US had a pretty impressive avant garde scene at the time

bloodcrystallisetosand 05.27.2009 09:44 PM

though not strictly 'noise', i love the stuff like AMT and aural fit which has come from the noisy velvets/blue cheer/can/hawkwind route but just makes it even more deranged.

les rallizes denudes are ace and the dude rocks a pair of shade like no motherfucker that side of the pacific.

personal fave are tsurubami, one of the innumerable kawabata makoto sideprojects. i'd tell you how the guitar washes over and destroys you like a tsunami, how the bass is an anchor caught in the tsunami's inexorable pull and how the drums splash and accentuate the music like the deft flecks of an abstract impressionists brush but, you know, i'd get called a cunt so i should probably just leave it.

Masonna's split with Violent Onsen Geisha. Both sides are God, and it's easy to find online. Check it out.

Hybrid Noisebloom by Merzbow doesn't waste any time.
