Thurston Moore - The Best Day [2014]

Looks like there will be another Thurston record in September. I'm pretty excited for this one, these new songs sounds pretty cool and they have sonic vibe, don't they?

e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUWVl1Fyoj0

mil_pl 04.02.2014 06:32 PM

two nights at the King Georg in Koln GER in trio with Steve Shelley and James Sedwards playing new songs from forthcoming record (due out late Sep). righteous vibes.

Rather_Ripped 04.03.2014 08:43 PM

Wonder what tuning he's using. Like the new songs.

cgdgbb, the old pavement tuning, I guess. Also looking forward to the LNOE-tabs

scott v 04.13.2014 08:21 AM

At least some of the songs are in CGDGCD, there is one song on a new youtube vid where he runs through the harmonics on the 7th and 12th frets and its def in that tuning. The use of the unison Bs is not obvious and by watching him in the vids it appears that the two high strings are more likely in C & D.

Also i figured out that heavenmetal is easier to play in CGDGCD and not CGDGBB, i don't see him using CGDGBB to play that song and he did play it live recently, also on youtube.

firstfan84 04.13.2014 01:10 PM

I think you are right...after a better look CGDGCD

Rather_Ripped 04.14.2014 12:16 AM

If you go to 50:06 you can see Thurston tuning up from the previous new song.

http://youtu.be/JeiI8ii5RPY

Chris Lawrence 04.14.2014 12:46 AM

I randomly clicked at 30:10 of that video and was like.."Thurston and Steve are playing Rain on Tin?!" buuuut..nope.

dasx 04.14.2014 06:52 AM

New song sounds good, yet incomplete. I hope Thurston manages to create focused, multi-layered and well-balanced album that contains something to more to explore than CLM album.

Mortte Jousimo 04.14.2014 09:34 AM

It seems there is coming lots of different stuff. Some of the songs reminds me Trees Outside, some psychic Hearts/CLM, some are really noisy. Maybe Thurston wants to put out album where are his every sides?

I understood first there are coming two separate albums, but it seems Detonation has changed to Best Day (like Benediction changed Demolished thoughts). It´s of course possible name changes again.

Rather_Ripped 04.14.2014 02:40 PM

Hey Chris, What tuning do you think "Speak to the wild" is in? You seem to be the master tabber. HAHA
Thanks.

Chris Lawrence 04.14.2014 03:19 PM

I don't even know what that is! Does somebody want to round up a list of all the post-CLM LP new Thurston tunes (including the ones that CLM were playing on their last tour)? Preferably with youtube links?

Rather_Ripped 04.14.2014 06:21 PM

Speak to the wild

http://youtu.be/aUWVl1Fyoj0

Chris Lawrence 04.14.2014 09:04 PM

The harmonics he picks at the start of the song are definitely CGDGCD.

guest 04.14.2014 10:14 PM

has thurston just changed the title from detonation or are these two separate LPs?

Chris Lawrence 04.14.2014 10:28 PM

Guessing he changed the title a la Benediction.

K, I watched this whole video and from what I can tell, the entire main set is in CGDGCD, then he retunes to CGDGBB for the encore. Any tuning he does during the main set is just because they've slipped slightly out.

Is this an accurate set, do we know the names of the 3 other songs?

Song 1 (I Love You Forevermore)
Song 2 (Speak to the Wild)
Germs Burn
Detonation
Song 5 (instrumental)
Heavenmetal
--
Ono Soul

Also, all the Chelsea Light Moving stuff (including "No Go" "Sunday Stage" and "The Ecstasy") is in CGDGBB. "Heavenmetal" seems to be the exception, but that seems to not quite be a CLM song anyway.

Rather_Ripped 04.15.2014 11:03 AM

You guys are awesome! Thanks! All kinds of goodies the past few days. I really like "Speak to the wild" and "Heavenmetal".

Chris Lawrence 04.15.2014 09:51 PM

I'm knee deep in this shit now, and I guess I have you to thank/blame! I was waiting to just listen to the record but now I'm kinda intrigued by the new Thurston live stuff. Catching up on some of Stu's recordings now!

Chris Lawrence 04.15.2014 11:40 PM

I'm not sure why I've done this since I won't be adding them to the Chronology, but here are some recent Thurston set lists...I didn't realize he was already doing these newest tunes back in October!

I'm guessing the new album will be:

"That's Why I Love You Forevermore"
"Speak to the Wild"
"Instrumental"
"Germs Burn" (re-recording?)
"Detonation" (re-recording?)

recorded 03/26/14 in London w/ Steve Shelley, James Sedwards, and Deb(?). i suspect they may re-record "Germs Burn" since it has a longer intro/etc now, but he may re-use the existing "Detonation". Who played on the original recordings of "Detonation" & "Germs Burn"?

since those songs are long as hell, add in some Chelsea Light Moving leftovers from last year (possibly even live takes, implied by Thurston?). "Sunday Stage" for sure, not sure about "No Go" and "The Ecstasy".

That's only 8 songs, have we heard of any others? Think he'll re-use "Heavenmetal"? The stuff with Sedwards is pretty long so I can imagine that being the bulk of the record.

I'll bet the instrumental is called "The Best Day".

mil_pl 04.16.2014 05:03 AM

Damn, I really hope there will be two separated albums. One with stuff like Detonation (which I personally don't like at all) plus the unreleased CLM material, and one with completely new songs like Speak to the Wild and I Love You Forever More, they sound fresh and I thought that Thurston is back with these. But probably we can only wish that there will be two albums coming out this year, eh?

Rather_Ripped 04.16.2014 01:00 PM

Is there a video for the 04/11/14?

Chris Lawrence 04.16.2014 05:01 PM

Maybe, search "sonic protest" or "thurston moore france" on youtube. I just listened to the torrent from dime.

Rather_Ripped 04.17.2014 06:47 PM

Hey Chris, Is there any Tabs for Thurston's Demolished Thoughts? I've only found "Benediction".
Thanks,
Andrew

Chris Lawrence 04.17.2014 07:10 PM

Nice to know your name! I haven't done any but all the tunings are on the site and I encourage people to submit any songs they figure out. I actually quite liked that album but haven't heard it in a while - you've put me in a bit of a "Thurston mood" though, so who knows...I think "Alighted" is the only CLM song I haven't posted yet (please don't tell me people want to play "Mohawk"), maybe I'll give DT a spin.

Rather_Ripped 04.17.2014 08:46 PM

I would attempt to figure the songs out, but I suck at that. I'm better at coming up with my own material. haha
Your efforts are appreciated!
:)

Chris Lawrence 04.18.2014 03:23 PM

I listened to Demolished Thoughts last night. I still won't be tabbing it but I did discover after 3 years that there is a CD booklet in the vinyl sleeve, so I got to read tons of juicy poetry.

Okay this is just my opinion but what obviously made SY interesting was the way Lee and Thurston's guitars interact sound-wise with each other while for the most part not matching note-wise exactly what each other are doing... Some of that is definitely missing in CLM and from what I hear on the new material. I don't mean to say that negatively about Keith Wood or James Sedwards as they are fine guitarists, but it could be how Thurston wants the songs to sound? Thurston definitely tends to lean on the "minimal" side, where Lee likes to layer parts and add overdubs.

chocolate_ladyland 04.28.2014 06:36 PM

Does anyone else think his punk/psych rock references are awkward as shit? Damn T, your like 70 years old, you don't have to be the coolest mofo anymore.

Still love ya buddy.

more older you are more nostalgia you get...like anyone of his age.

Rather_Ripped 04.28.2014 10:31 PM

Hey Chris, tried sending you a pm but it wouldn't go through, said your inbox is full. Anyone know where to find the tab for "Blood never lies"?

Chris Lawrence 04.28.2014 10:50 PM

You'd think a moderator could have an infinite inbox! I don't have a tab for that song, sorry. :(

I don't know, I don't think it bothers me that much... IMO his "beat poet" referencing tends to enter that sort of awkwardness, for me that is...

I thought he was still quite off the celeb radar since SY have ended, but last month's New York magazine has him as one of the current 26 musicians that have the most "relevancy to the NY scene". Though if you look at it a good portion of those folks they choose are older than him and the current crop to me isn't impressive (i.e. Vampire Weekend, ...ugh)

lee and thurston are the ying and the yang of noise rock.

Genteel Death 04.29.2014 03:51 PM

The four members of Sonic Youth were all as equally important, not just Lee and Thurston. I have no idea what it's like to be in a band, let alone in one that lasted for that long, but I imagine to be that good you'd need to share the sort of creative intimacy that wouldn't require just pushing someone out of bed so they can go out and buy new guitar strings.

Genteel Death 04.29.2014 04:09 PM

It should be noted that Sonic Youth closed their last album together with a song that sweeps the floor off your feet and particularly sounds like a group effort.

I just noticed this on the main page:

The Best Day – New LP/CD

There is a new solo CD by Thurston Moore to be released by Matador Records
USA/UK/Europe on September 23 2014. It is titled THE BEST DAY and is a
collection of songs both ravaging and thoughtful. Sweet, deadly and
furthering the wild style TM exhibited all through Sonic Youth and beyond.
Most of the songs feature a rhythm section of Steve Shelley (SY) and Deb
Googe (My Bloody Valentine) which = magic, and the guitar action of London
boy James Sedwards, As well as a few songs recorded with the Chelsea Light
Moving crew of Samara Lubelski, John ‘Sunburned’ Moloney and Keith ‘Hush
Arbors’ Wood. Produced by Thurston Moore in London Fields.

Mortte Jousimo 05.23.2014 06:39 AM

So Chelsea may not be totally buried...
