Finland's noise rock/sludge metal shit.

Since I saw Hebosagil yesterday I figured maybe I should start a thread about them. And all the ugly loud noisy bands this country has to offer, because there are plenty.

And nobody starts threads about bands on this lonely forum anymore.

I've seen Hebosagil a bunch of times and they kill everytime. Their album 'Lohtu' is absolutely amazing. Super heavy sludgy noise rock with, hmm, sonicyouthian guitar drones.
I think some of you might dig it: https://hebosagil.bandcamp.com/album/lohtu
Here's a great live a few years back to give an idea: https://youtu.be/F5gYBN-7oZ4

Throat are another favourite of mine. Very much in the vein of Unsane, Helmet etc. Seen them many times, noise rock is their game.

FUN, the band I've seen live more than any other band. Probably 11 times or something in the last 13 years.
They totally ripped off Albini, but pulled it off well. https://noisecorewalze.bandcamp.com/...klarska-poreba

Similarly, Baxter Stockman, who are now defunct, did the same thing. I managed to see them a few times.
Here's a video for their super mega hit song 'Labour':https://youtu.be/z5mtKjXlddc

Sokea Piste. Noisy punk rock, served with healthy cynicism.
This one's a great album. https://sokeapiste.bandcamp.com/albu...seen-maailmaan

Kantamus. A fairly new band that i've seen three times this year. I was pretty much blown away when I saw them the first time, without hearing a single note from them before the gig.
a three piece sludge punk fuckery: https://kantamus.bandcamp.com/album/tarinoita-suosta-2

There's more but I'm too busy getting drunk and typing is tedious.

Whattya think of Avarus?

Savage Clone 12.01.2018 06:35 PM

Oranssi Pazuzu are finland's best export these days IMO...

Happy Finnish Independence Day!

Phlegmscope 12.07.2018 04:28 PM

Yes, finland in the year 2018: the fucking neo-nazis were having their flag waving independence march.

As for Avarus, I was into that stuff around ten plus years ago. Might have seen them live, can't remember. There was a scene of that kind of freefolk freakout stuff back then... Kemialliset Ystävät, Lau Nau, Islaja, Fonal Label etc. Then it sort of died out.

Oranssi Pazuzu sort of slipped my radar. I've heard a bunch of stuff, but never a full album I think. And they're pretty big. There's related bands who share members with pazuzu along with each other like Overdose Support, Atomikylä and Dark Buddha Rising. DBR were great, I once saw them opening for High on Fire and their synth dude was doing pretty massive sub bass drones that were resonating throughout the venue. A hungoverish friend of mine was at their bands rehearsal space in the basement of the venue and thought about coming to see DBR but the huge low end volume was coming through two floors and he figured he probably cant handle it with his concurrent state.
They were indeed louder and heavier than High on Fire, who aren't exactly the quietest of bands. Occult hippie doom shit from the dark side, Manson would approve.

I saw a bunch of those forest hippy bands back when they were a thing and they all sucked live

This is true.

Phlegmscope 12.15.2018 05:34 PM

Yes, I can totally understand that. I never saw those bands that many times so I was never really disappointed. Kemialliset Ystävät were always good though. But yeah, there's a limit to what hippies banging broken toys thru loop pedal can take you.
I sort of lost my interest to that stuff many years ago. I just cant be fucked anymore.

One artist who sort of emerged from that scene that I've seen in the last few years is Pekko Käppi, who plays jouhikko, which is a bowed lyre from many many centuries ago. He was great when I saw him opening for The Ex.
You should check out this live clip from Supersonic fest: https://youtu.be/Ng4pJUNgIH8

Moving on back to heavier stuff.

There's another band from the city of Oulu (alot of these off beat noise rockers are from the city of Oulu): Stolen Kidneys, who are kind of brooding in your face noisy sludgy posthardcore. Everytime I've seen them live is been fucking awesome. Had to go and comment on the unwound shirt the guitarist often sports, cool blokes too.

A couple older bands from the nineties who no longer exists:

Sweetheart. Klanky birthday party influenced screech. Few of the members now play in Circle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN-eleW4uaA
Their albums are impossible to find but someone uploaded them to youtube.

Forkboy (from oulu). I didn't even know this band ever existed until Jukka from Throat put out their entire discography on a cd comp on his Kaoskontrol label/distro.

Submerged (from Oulu, obviously). Finland's Fudge Tunnel.
They even made a couple of silly clearly low budget music videos:

This 7" is pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ksQVpdfrWk

The Oulu thing is funny because so many of the bands of this ilk are from that city in northern finland: KTMK, Radiopuhelimet, Hebosagil, Kantamus, Viisikko, Renate/Cordate, VENE, Boar, the Bad Vugum label, and the bands I mentioned above.
