Wooden Wand Plans To Collaborate With Lee Ranaldo

Wooden Wand plans on collaborating with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo this winter for an album set for release in 2007. Wand will also make an appearance at All Tomorrow’s Parties, curated by another Sonic Youth member, Thurston Moore. Wand will play that on Dec. 10 in England with Gang Of Four, Deerhoof and Six Organs of Admittance.

It was ok, I had to force myself to go out with the lousy weather. Zaimph replaced GHQ as opener which I was a little bummed but even on her own Marsha builds a dense ear crushing drone from layered and sampled vocs and guitar, for about 20 minutes. Within 10 minutes WW was on the stage, his wife sang a couple tunes with him but mostly it was him and his guitar, playing mostly songs from a new album he said (not sure which new album he means), he's really become an amazingly confident and skilled songwriter since I'd see him playing in the Golden Calves, and I think "singer/songwriter" is a curse, so thats high praise from me. I do prefer him playing with the bigger ensembles, vs the solo thing. The Charalambides started with Tom playing some free guitar while Cristina sang, then they did what I think was a Cat Power cover, then Cristina started playing guitar and the two went into some long instrumental nuttiness, and then she ended up singing/yelling trying to keep up with Tom's really loud guitar. But there was a lot of bleed thru from the other spaces during this set that was distracting, not sure how the recording will turn out. Would have been a perfect lineup at Tonic...or the Issue Project Room. At any rate it was a good night and early, out of there by 10:30. Did you see the wallingford show?

Wooden Wand - Portrait in the Clouds

10/11/06
We all know Wooden Wand never rests. Wand plans on collaborating with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo this winter for an album set for release in 2007. More details will be available soon. If you think his involvement with Sonic Youth members ends there, then you are wrong. Wand will make an appearance at the Thurston Moore curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in England on December 10th, 2006 with Gang of Four, Deerhoof and Six Organs of Admittance.

If you haven’t heard enough Wooden Wand, then you can check out his new track on the EP release Hours of the Horizon (Three Lobed Records) and a Velvet Underground cover song for a limited edition vinyl single on the People In A Position To Know label. Follow these links to listed to Wooden Wand’s cover of “Run, Run, Run” available exclusively from Pitchfork HERE and his tune “Wand, Arise” from the Three Lobed release HERE.

Unlike the May 2006 reissue of the Wooden Wand solo album Harem of the Sundrum and the Witness Figg (5RC/Soft Abuse) and his free-form folk work with the Vanishing Voice, Wooden Wand utilizes The Sky High Band to play a more straightforward brand of songbook folk on his current album Second Attention. The man himself describes his new record this way:

“There’s a famous rock and roll legend of questionable origin that goes something like this: one day in early 1967, during the recording of what was to be Gene Vincent’s self titled album, Gene and most of his band were shanghaied on some interstate with car trouble, and failed to notify the studio that they would not be able to make the recording date. An enigmatic young band called The Seeds happened to be in town, and seized the opportunity. The band entered the studio in Gene’s place, and before the engineers and studio hacks knew what had happened, the tape was rolling and The Seeds had effectively commandeered the session. The band left with a reel of music that has been described by the ludicrously few who’ve heard it as ‘obscenely great’ rock and roll.”

This story, along with the now well-worn tale of Jandek’s note-for-note cover of Between The Buttons, might be the only things to adequately prepare you for Second Attention.

For those in the NYC area, be sure to catch Wooden Wand live at the Knitting Factory on November 8th, 2006.
