How many freaking side projects....

whorefrost 03.08.2007 06:51 AM

Moshe 03.12.2007 01:12 AM

Now it is confirmed. This release is the first out of 3 coming on Smalltown Superjazzz!

Moshe 03.15.2007 08:02 AM

Wow! Ive just heard it and it melted my head. This might be Thurston's best side project ever!
Yes, even better than the Diskaholics or Dream Aktion Unit.
The recording is from 30th of September 2005 in Teatro Aristo, Reggio Emilia, Italy and it sounds so good.
Just imagine Borbetomagus with a killer rhythm section!!

The first track is 14:21 min long and it is all explosive. The second track is 46:04 and it moves from quit atmospheric moment to pure sweet noise.

Mats Gustafsson is just amazing. Sonic youth should ask him to join them instead of Jim!

pokkeherrie 03.15.2007 08:12 AM

sounds good... another addition to the shopping list. they're releasing stuff quicker than I can buy it.

Moshe 03.15.2007 08:18 AM

This is not just "good". This is a true masterpiece.

28.03.2007 THE FIRST ORIGINAL SILENCE

A monster is born, a clash of the the titans! Original Silence is the new band of: Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Terrie Ex (The Ex), Jim O`Rourke, Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Paal Nilssen-Love (The Thing, Atomic), Massimo Pupillo (Zu). The album will be released in April worldwide on Smalltown Superjazzz. The band was put together by Mats Gustafsson, known from his work with Sonic Youth, Peter Brotzman, David Grubbs and groups like Diskaholics Anonymous Trio and The Thing among others. The recordings on this album was recorded live on the Original Silence Italian tour, the 30th of September 2005 in Teatro Arisoto, Reggio Emilia, Italy, to be more specific. This is the first in a series of recordings from Original Silence. There is obviously lots of early Sonic Youth, The Ex and Scandinavia free-jazz in this album. But you can also hear their many influences from Black Flag, to drone rock, to Albert Ayler, to Boredoms, to noise, punk, Dead C, Merzbow, 1960s minimalism and The Stooges et al. In other words everything we love, all mixed together! This is 100% improvised rock. A spontaneous, monumental, raw and harshly beautiful out-rock masterpiece!

Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke Turn Noise Into Silence
Form avant supergroup with members of the Ex, the Thing, others

Picture Ornette Coleman sitting in with the Stooges (the old Stooges, that is) as they tear through "L.A. Blues" and you'd be in the neighborhood of free jazz/noise rock/construction noise hybrid Original Silence.

This ear doctor's dream come true-- made up of producer-of-strange-things Jim O'Rouke, Kim Gordon's husband Thurston Moore, Swedish hornblower Mats Gustafsson, Terrie Ex of the Ex, Paal Nilssen-Love of the Thing, and Zu's Massimo Puppilo-- will issue their inaugural tinnitus-inducing screed April 23.

Squeaks, squalls, and saxophone calls abound on the totally-improvised, two-track The First Original Silence LP, committed to tape at a September 2005 concert in Reggio Emilia, Italy and due from the Smalltown Superjazzz label. The First is the first in a planned series of Original Silence releases. We've heard it. It's loud.

The two tracks are called "If Light Has No Age, Time Has No Shadow" and "In the Name of the Law".
Some other band Thurston Moore's in will be playing through their magisterial Daydream Nation in a few spots in conjunction with All Tomorrow's Parties' Don't Look Back series, not least of which being our Pitchfork Music Festival. Wait, you're kidding, right? You're not?! Score!

I think i might have to agree, i just heard it and boy its a dandy!
Alot more "rockin" than i would expect for an free/improv noise album, some great moments of intensity where all players are on the same page but each adding unique soudn and their style. Nilseen-Love is a great drummer saw him in the Brotzmann Tentet and this recording reconfirms that, Massimo's bass work is nice too since never having heard him before i think i need to pick up some of those Zu recordings. Plus the recording quality is quite great, the rhythm section sounds strong! i think at times it seems thurston is missing in the mix because i'm quite used to him being really apparant and in your face but he's mixed at a good level and complements well with Terrie Ex's guitar playing... i think right now this is definitly one of the top releases of avant/noise/improv of the year.

i like this comment: "Kim Gordon's husband Thurston Moore" instead of "Sonic Youth member Thurston Moore"
