Niiiice. Seeing J on drums sounds fantastic.

Brett Robinson 05.30.2006 04:46 PM

decent venue.

i saw wolf eyes and whitehouse there a couple months ago. its low-key, theres a restaurant attached, nice decor, and the soundguy let me film the show from his exclusive balcony perch while others were writhing in the sweaty mass of boys on the floor below.

Savage Clone 05.30.2006 04:48 PM

Does anyone know who is in Blue Cheer right now?

DJ Rick 05.30.2006 04:59 PM

Dickie Peterson has kept the band going since 1966. They never really broke up. But Paul Whaley no longer plays along (since 10 years ago) and Leigh Stephens has been on non-speaking terms with Dickie since the 70's.

Expect mediocre biker rock at best...caveat emptor!

I've got a lot of hometown pride for Blue Cheer, and this current county-faire-caliber version of the band doesn't do anything to imperil that, but seriously...here's a band that should called it quits 35 years ago.

My advice is don't waste your money.

Savage Clone 05.30.2006 05:00 PM

That was what I wanted to know.
I don't think it's Yoder either.

DJ Rick 05.30.2006 06:42 PM

Yoder hasn't been with the band since the 70's, too.

He plays acoustic shows at the Sudwerk brewpub in Davis all the time...and has done so for over a decade.

Until just a couple years ago, he never wanted to talk about his days with Blue Cheer, Kak, or Oxford Circle; he had totally forsaken rock 'n' roll. But after Big Beat from the UK reissued all of Kak's work on "Kakology" and Cingular Wireless used their "Electric Sailor" in a TV commercial, he changed his tune sorta. At least, he visited KDVS as a guest and talked about the old days of psych and garage-rock in Davis and the Sacto Valley.

wow

Lethrneck4 05.30.2006 10:42 PM

this show is worth it for Witch alone anyhow.....seeing Blue Cheer, even a lesser version is also well worth it...since im also a big fan of thiers...

DJ Rick 05.31.2006 02:06 PM

Seriously, you might be singing a different tune after you see Blue Cheer 37 years past their relevance.

Lethrneck4 05.31.2006 02:31 PM

i thought the same when i saw Jethro Tull back in 2000, and they blew me away

Witch will kick ass, if Blue Cheer is also good, its a bonus....if not...oh well

anytime a great show like this is 10 minutes from my house, im happy

BAR is a great venue.....they have free rock shows on sundays nights, and ive seem the likes of Dead Meadow(a few times there), Kinski, Acid Mothers, High On Fire and other notable acts thier...they also brew their own beer and have some of the best thin crust pizza in new haven

Savage Clone 05.31.2006 02:50 PM

I saw Tull in 1989, and at the time I was a huge fan. Afterwards I was not. What a display of cartoonish buffoonery and cheeseball sex-joke slide shows.

DJ Rick 05.31.2006 07:54 PM

In 2000, Jethro Tull were only about 25 years past their prime...about the same as your typical never-die British oi band these days.

But Blue Cheer hasn't made a good record in 37 years (and that was only one side of the third album (it's been 39 years since their one truly great album)), and that's a big difference.

kingcoffee 05.31.2006 08:35 PM

That sounds absolutely amazing!!!!!!

Lethrneck4 05.31.2006 10:50 PM

im hearing rumblings on the freakscene boards that leigh stephens is indeed in the band again, im trying to confirm this

i dont know man, when i saw Jethro Tull in 2000, it was amazing.....every song was nailed and ian anderson, despite a broken foot, was running around like a madman!! great show

i loved vincebus eruptum and insideoutside....never heard the self titled one, was that thier third?

Lethrneck4 06.14.2006 02:23 PM

hey, GUESS WHAT!!!

YUP, Witch has cancelled its second CT date in the past few months...this time blowing off the show with BLue Cheer

wow Witch, have you been following SY's lead of fucking the fans in CT??

so Witch plays the Iron Horse in northampton a few months ago, i was gonna go, but they had a date at wesleyan booked so i figured id catch them there....yeah right, wesleyan date was cancelled days after the iron horse show...ok, im mad at this point but not real mad...THEN, WItch announces its gonna play a show in new haven CT with BLUE CHEER!! hole cow!! i havent been this excited since SY announced they were playing new haven 2 years ago. but, just like SY, Witch has now CANCELLED the new haven show too...WOW!! and they just plaed pearl street in northampton last week, but again, they were supposed to be playing new haven, 10 minutes from my house...so i skipped the pearl street show, and BANG...screwed again

ok, lets hear how i have no right to be mad cause i live so close to NYC and MA.

this is complete and total classless bullshit, first pulled by SY, who STILL havent made up the 2 CT dates they cancelled, and now Witch, who has trumped SY by cancelling 2 CT dates in like 3 months.

The third album was called New! Improved! and it's watered-down folk-rock on one side, but the other side is a burly menace thanks to Randy Holden urging the band to return to the formula of Vincebus Eruptum and take it to new heights/depths.

Randy was a member only during this particular album, and after he parted, he went onto recorded a legendary album--Population II--which languished in obscurity for decades before being bootlegged and subsequently reissued with bonus tracks, and now it is treasured by many a fan of hard psych and early metal as a landmark album.

Locally, we have heard nothing about Leigh being back in the band...and we have our doubts based on the grudge he had.

Lethrneck4 06.14.2006 10:49 PM

yes, that population 2 album is fucking kick ass!

dude, i think you need to maybe see them again man....Blue Cheer fucking blew the roof off Bar last night in new haven.. i stood there stunned the whole time by how fierce and exact they sounded. man, the whole place was flipping out. they played nothing but old songs. all of vincebus eruptum was played, along with the hunter and just a little bit from the second album.

Blue Cheer now has gigs lined up with the likes of Witch and Dead Meadow now. i dont mean to say what you said isnt true, but maybe they got a second wind now. im a big blue cheer fan and i couldnt have been more amazed with how they played. dicki peterson looks like a bad ass still to this day, and he rocked that bass like it was the late 60s again, same for whalen, he is an amazing drummer. even the guitar player was great, not perfect, but he played strong and added his own noise and feedback effects to the end of a lot of the songs....plus he had a Melvins shirt on

i cant wait to catch them again, dickie said theyd be back around new haven in a few months..

highlight of the night was parchment farm > out of focus

pass the grass man!
