trompe le monde is my favourite pixies album

there, i said it.

Rob Instigator 03.27.2015 08:26 AM

it is GOOD

Severian 03.27.2015 10:25 AM

Yeah, man. It is definitely good. You say this like you're somehow ashamed to admit it or something. Have you been hanging out with a bunch of assholes who have forked themselves into thinking that the only "pure" Pixies albums are Come on pilgrim -> Doolittle?

It's true that the band did some serious re-arranging of priorities after Doolittle. For one thing, the illusion of the band being something approximating a democracy lost a lot of its value, and having everything the band wrote feel like an extension of Francis alone became super important. So Bossa and Trompe feel less and less like Pixies albums, and increasingly like what would become "Frank Black." But who fuckin cares bro?

I for one enjoy the Beatlesque feel of the first few releases, BBC sessions, and B-Sides. I like the banshee howl of Black Francis better than the more compressed Hüsker Dü tael scream of the emerging Frank Black. But still, Trompe Le Monde is a goddamn classic and everyone who's anyone knows it.

As an album, it kicks the shit out of Bossanova (and Indie Cindy), even if Bossa has a couple tracks that Trompe can't top. Of the two, it's just simply the better album. It plays more seamlessly from beginning to end, and it fucking rocks, where Bossa takes lengthy detours into meandering, directionless nonsense.

Don't feel like your opinion is somehow invalid just because it might be less popular than other opinions. At least Trompe Le Monde features all four Pixies. It's not like saying that Where You Been is your favorite Dinosaur jr album.... (this would still be totally acceptable since the album is technically a "Dinosaur jr" record, even though it has fuckall to do with the original line-up, and plays more like a Mascis solo project)... So you're davorite Pixies album happens to be the one that history frowns upon the most. So what? Fuck history. "Letter to Memphis," "Alex Eiffel," "The Sad Punk," "Motorway to Roswell".... fuck it, every song on that album is pure nostalgic power-Pop on PCP.

Man, my favorite Sonic Youth album was A Thousand Leaves for years. I caught tons of shit for that, but I stood my ground because I'm the biggest SY fan I've ever encountered IRL, and I'll be damned if I'm going to be lectured on cultural relevance by some pitchfork-thumping little shit-nose who bases his opinion on arbitrary lists thrown together by a bunch of people just like him.

Well fuck them! Sgt. Peoper is not the best BEATLES album by a goddamn long shot. Revolver and Rubber Soul have it topped, and the White Album reigns above it like a god would reign over an illegitimate Titan with a learning disability.

And Ascension is better than Blue Train. As is My Favorite Things.

Oh, and A Ghost is Born is, like, immeasurably better than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Just my opinion.

Down with the status quo.

Severian 03.27.2015 10:30 AM

Went a little overboard there didn't I? Oh well. FUCK THA POLICE!

Rob Instigator 03.27.2015 11:37 AM

WE'LL REPLICATE YOU WITH SOUND!

Trompe Le Monde is the hardest rocking Pixies album. I love it. Alec Eiffel? Olympus Mons? Motorway to Roswell? HEAD ON? awesomeness./

You're all on crack if you think it's their best album. STOP TAKING DRUGS!

Rob Instigator 03.27.2015 01:21 PM

It is GREAT.

rebeccagotcursedout 03.27.2015 02:34 PM

im more of a Doolittle guy. Trompe is good too. they should play "Letter to Memphis" on any rock station at least once a day. but that wasn't the way the universe was built.

Toilet & Bowels 03.27.2015 09:39 PM

The Pixies are probably the most mediocre bands ever. They have a couple of quite good songs.

noisereductions 03.27.2015 10:14 PM

Every Pixies album is my favorite Pixies album.

rebeccagotcursedout 03.27.2015 10:17 PM

yeah really. whats up with this Toilet dude? Trompe is not as psychotic as the first three but there is great tunes there.

plz change yr name to 'party pooper toilet and bowels'.

noisereductions 03.27.2015 11:29 PM

if I had to choose I honestly say At The BBC was my fav. If I had to choose studio album, I guess Surfer Rosa. But honestly, every Pixies album is excellent for diff reasons and that's what made them a great band to me.

Genteel Death 03.28.2015 12:13 AM

I love the Pixies when I'm feeling like a girl on Instagram or Tumblr.

Genteel Death 03.28.2015 12:27 AM

Good fag. Bad fag.

More like "extremely correct toilet and bowels."
This band is not that great all. And I heard them from day one. Seeing them become a "touchstone" in the years since is extremely baffling.

rebeccagotcursedout 03.28.2015 10:06 PM

^^that's yr opinion. you do realize im an old fart too commenting in the hip hop thread too.

Pixies are a good band.

the Pixies are fanstastic!!!!

you can never compete with the old punkers and the old post punkers. dis the way it is.

Savage Clone 03.28.2015 10:09 PM

The music aged poorly.also the vocals were always irritating, as was the production.

rebeccagotcursedout 03.28.2015 10:15 PM

the production is fine and is the music. modern for the 80's but/and timeless for right now.

the pixies are jam up dude!!!!

do you have a fever or something?

ATL is fantastic. One of the few SY releases I actually managed to snag on vinyl. Contre Le Sexism is one of the band's worst songs though - such an atrocious start to a masterful album. If anyone here would like to explain the appeal of that track, in hopes of me growing an appreciation for it, I'd be extremely grateful.

And yes Trompe Le Monde rules. I never really listen to the pixies though. Still a chill ass band

Toilet & Bowels 03.29.2015 03:07 PM

Unless someone said nurse or rather ripped I think any choice of favourite SY is pretty reasonable

Diesel 04.02.2015 10:02 AM

Trompe is ok. It does have their best song on it. Distance = rate x time (Worst song name ever).. if anyone's interested in my awesome taste..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrGI_T3yE1E

I was aware of the fact that RR is not very popular on this board, but what's up with the Sonic Nurse hate?

Whaaaaaaaaaa?????

First off, you're fucking MAD, friend. Nurse seems to be viewed by many as the "best of ALL worlds" SY album... The one that connected the dots between Bad Moon's scorching post-hardcore, art-punk acid haze, the tense dynamics of the "trilogy" (Evol/Sis/DN), the pop-culture trash act of Ciccone Youth, Goo, Dirty, and the textured layers of controlled sonic chaos that the band achieved in their last decade together.

Nurse is a perfectly acceptable "favorite" Sonic Youth album for anyone who got into the band at any time.

Now, as for Rather Ripped... I know most of us probably jumped on board sometime between Dirty and ATL. A few of us got on the train during the late '80s; fewer still, I imagine, remember the anticipation and nervousness that preceded the release of Bad Moon Rising, their weird ass favorite band's first LP.

It stands to reason, then, that SOME folks who love SY as much as the rest of us, were only first exposed to the band back in 2006. They probably love Sonic Youth every bit as much as the rest of us do. Rather Ripped was a scary album, if you recall: it was pop! It was, like, Dirty/EJST&NS v2.0. Only I think it actually worked better as a true pop record than those albums did. I LOVE Rather Ripped, and I'm a child of the Jet Set/Washing Machine era.

I suppose I can understand how some fans might just not like or care about Ripped, but I'm still stumped about the Nurse comment. If I had to guess, I'd say a poll of all users would rank it in the top 3 albums of the band's career.

WeirdoS :p

Drjohnrock 04.02.2015 10:56 PM

Never listened to Trompe Le Monde. Bossanova sucked so bad I didn't bother with TLM. Maybe I'll check it out sometime. Or maybe not.

Toilet & Bowels 04.03.2015 08:11 AM

Nurse is SY doing an approximation of themselves but with overly fussy and ornate production.

rebeccagotcursedout 04.03.2015 06:10 PM

Nurse is my least favorite SY album. but Ripped is pop goodness. nothing more or less. it tis what it tis.

Ok, I respect your opinion even though I'm disagreeing explosively from my asshhole and esophagus...

But I've got to ask: why do you feel this is the case with Nurse, but presumably not with Murray Street or Nycg&f? I personally think Nurse is weaker than MS, if only because "Dude Ranch Nurse" should have been a b-side, and Murray Street's best moments are *all* on the shortlist of the band's best moments ever.... But why pick on Nurse's production alone when it has so much in common with these other releases?

It's not like they got all precious and corny with their production. Unmade Bed and Dripping Dream contain some of Sonic Youth's most tender guitar tones, but there's feedback swirling in the background, and there's the build up and release of tension...

rebeccagotcursedout 04.03.2015 06:23 PM

if you took all the best songs off of Murray Street and Nurse, it would make a fine album. same goes for Ripped and the Eternal.

or for those super fans....two great double albums.:)

there. you :) now?!?!

rebeccagotcursedout 04.03.2015 10:19 PM

non doubt in my mind. Thousand Leaves is best Sonic album of the 90's.

thought this at the time. has the most raunchy and pretty songs on any SY album. it's beauty and awkward to the non-believer.

Snare Girl is my fav.

tw2113 04.03.2015 10:23 PM

I have a mental love affair with "Sunday"

rebeccagotcursedout 04.03.2015 10:25 PM

wait!!! then there's NYC ghost and flowers. which is just as good

Washing Machine has shit boring production.

rebeccagotcursedout 04.03.2015 10:31 PM

I hate NYCG&F's production actually (extremely cold and dehumanised - and I think SY recognized it in interviews).

EDIT: I should add that most songs of the album sound way better live.

Genteel Death 04.04.2015 02:16 PM

NYCG&F may or may not have bad production but it's got some great songs and sounds like a band pushing their imagination. Sonic Nurse, on the other hand, sounds like they were pushing some of their fans' imagination. To me that's the difference and the end of Sonic Youth. I still love The Eternal overall but not in the same way I loved this band before Sonic Nurse.

I totally agree. I consider it one of their most perfect moments as a band. I never know how to order my Sonic Youth albums, but I always know that ATL is very close to the top at all times.

I have a really weird connection with "Female Mechanic now on Duty," "Karen Koltrane." "Hoarfrost" and "Heather Angel." The record spins me through a rabbit hole of emotions, while keeping me safely rooted to the warm sound of my favorite band jamming it out. The vibe stays positive, but hints at the existence of an underlying horror that is just out of focus.

Hoarfrost gives me the chills, despite being sung by the safest and most trusted of voices. "Heather Angel" feels like it should fill me with anxiety but it doesn't.
In fact it puts me in a very "punk rock" place, like Wire's "Mannequin" or something from Unknown Pleasures. I really would need a term paper or dissertation to fully describe my feelings about ATL.

dead_battery 04.04.2015 06:37 PM

ATL is def best of the 90s

do not get the nurse hate.

can easily imagine nurse as my fav of all sy albums.

nurse is def best of the 00s - better than murray and eternal. nurse would be in my top 5

dead_battery 04.04.2015 06:40 PM

if someone said ATL was the best sy album i couldnt disagree - all the 80s stuff is so different that its hard to compare with anything else.

EJSTNS has some weak stuff but also has the best thurston song of all (andro mind)

NYCG&F's is one of Sonic Youth's best. I refuse to let anyone tell me otherwise. it's perfect if you listen to the vinyl track order. besides that part where Thurston say's "blue jean fucking". I kinda wince during that.

Washing Machine is the one that sounds better live. the only time I've heard any NYCGhosts songs live was when I was a witness.

lucyrulesok 04.09.2015 07:58 AM

really happy that my thread turned into the board's millionth 'which sonic youth album is best?' discussion :P

it's evol by the way. tsssch.

lucyrulesok 04.09.2015 07:59 AM

didn't mean to sound so snarky in that post - i genuinely am happy.

also pleased that other people rate trompe le monde cause everyone i know irl thinks it's a load of shite
