cumbia / vallenato / chicha

last time i was at my parents place i was going through my mom's record collection, mostly checking out the discos fuentes stuff from the 60s and 70s. i converted a cumbia collection to mp3, but i want to get some stuff on cd... any recommendations?

Everyneurotic 10.30.2007 10:48 AM

stay away from it?

sorry, i only like classic salsa from the 70's and some scattered songs.

Disgruntled Youth 10.30.2007 06:04 PM

Fania All-Stars is the shiznite!!!

!@#$%! 10.30.2007 08:04 PM

dude are your parents colombian?

m1rr0r dash 10.30.2007 08:49 PM

thanks disgruntled, i'll have to check that out.

in the meantime, i just downloaded this compilation from amazon called The Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru. it's like some of the colombian cumbias that started me on this search, but with surf guitar instead of accordion. very cool.

also found a documentary on vallenato called Shotguns and Accordions: Music of the Marijuana Growing Regions of Colombia... hopefully this will yield some good finds...

any other latin peeps out there with pimp folklorico suggestions?

i see. that explains the vintage records.

well chicha is part andean part tropical music. a horrid mongrel, but if you enjoy, enjoy!

anyway if you're interested in the andean side, well-- google it?

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/MUSICA-DE-LOS-AN...QQcmdZViewItem

ouch-- pricey!

Everyneurotic 10.30.2007 11:04 PM

protest music from the 70's (often mixed with a wide amalgam of folk) kicks ass.

as i mentioned earlier, salsa is were it's at for tropical dance music, there's even some awesome contemporary stuff.

and, why not? check out ranchero/norteño music from mexico.

oh !@#$%!, you're so bougie. ...and being a mongrel, what would you expect me to listen to?

wikipedia on chicha:

It is a subgenre of the Cumbia, and it is very popular with the lower social classes. The higher classes generally view the music with contempt...

anyway, if chicha is a horrid mongrel, what does that make ozomatli?

You drive down Sunset Boulevard and turn off your stereo and roll down your windows and all the music that comes out of each and every different car, whether it's salsa, cumbia, merengue, or hip hop, funk or whatever, it's that crazy blend that's going on between that cacophony of sound is Ozomatli, y'know?

...or the spam allstars?

Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique – an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. But as we look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers -- we know something very special is going on.

Everyneurotic 10.30.2007 11:33 PM

ozomatli sucks.

ha ha ha. i dont know. i think i outmongrel you, genetically speaking.

i plead guilty on the bougie charges though. my derelict experiences were of my own choosing, not imposed by breeding. what can i do.

no it's not a "subgenre". it's musica tropicalandina. you could also say it's a "subgenre" of andean music. with electric guitars. and tropical beats.

it's the awful, awful lyrics, and the monotonous beats that get me though

what can i say.

thought chicha has evolved over the years, i don't know what's going on with it yet.
