Why the music cassette has never died

I was in Africa last Feb and cassette tapes are still going strong.
It was such a nice sight to walk into any music store and see a tape section.
Hundreds of them!

I also walked into a hardware store that had a wall of brand new old school ghettoblasters.
Still regret I didn't get the one with a double deck and fake wood laminate.

So Africa is really a worm hole to the 80s/early 90s? I agree, definitely should have picked that ghettoblaster up. Not surprised really, obviously no format truly dies.

i love the cassete sound, love how compact they are. and i love that you can find them cheap as hell.

i just don't use them very often because well, skipping and repeating tracks is a pain

there is a place in vancouver that does them wholesale so needless to say its very popular with all the musicians. i bought a bunch for our own release. painted them all pink.

I listen to Replacements' Let it Be on cassette in the car fairly often. Same goes for Misfits' Earth AD and Legacy of Brutality.

Satan 12.21.2009 03:05 PM

"Time reports that for a new edition, the dictionary is cutting the beloved term along with words like “brabble” and “growlery.”"

Pelle 10.07.2011 09:49 AM

Luv that! :p

The Soup Nazi 10.11.2011 07:58 PM

Ban also the term "cuneiform script" whydontcha - who could possibly want to know about that, right? Fucking idiots.

jennthebenn 10.12.2011 11:09 AM

I now vow to use the word "brabble" more in my daily life.

Actually, the definition IS my daily life.

Verb – “To quarrel about trifles; esp. to quarrel noisily, brawl, squabble”

StrayDog 10.12.2011 12:01 PM

after so long not listening through the cassette
this week I bought a cassette by Arrington De Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa about 4$, its still great

CASSETTE is a feature-length documentary that celebrates the past, present, and future of an endearing musical format.

nothing bumps harder in a good car sound system other than a pioneer tape deck. switching to cds and ipod has had certain perks, however the over all thundering low end of the cassette is unchallenged even by digital. also, I have only one word to explain the thriving of the cassette.. Africa ;)

The mix tapes shown there include, among others, Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory", the Minutemen, the Stones' "Beast Of Burden" and the Raincoats' "Fairytale in the Supermarket". Not bad at all!

Cassettes are my favorite format. They fit in your pocket, they're easily recordable, they're great. There are always blank ones at the Salvation Army by my house, so I always nab 'em when I can.

tesla69 12.02.2011 10:05 AM

I've been enjoying the small printing cassette release by Tom Carter and mv/ee and Ecstatic Peace over the past few years - I tell people, sometimes I just want to listen to music, I don't want to wait while the cd loads or the file loads and fight the drivers and all the digital shit that keep me waiting when I want IMMEDIATE relief. I've got lots of cassettes from the 80s that still play fine.

terminal pharmacy 12.03.2011 03:00 PM

i only use tape for making tape delay in my multitracker.

oh and i have an endless tape which is cool.

hirsute_biped 12.04.2011 05:17 PM

I just got one of these: http://www.listentocolour.com/09/innerworship.php

still have to figure out how to hook up my tape deck to my stereo amp while using these Harmon/Kardon computer speakers coming out of my tape-out jacks: http://www.harmankardon.com/EN-US/Pr...SOUNDSTICKS3AM
