Oh!! Sooooo good. I live that album so much. |
EL GRAN COMBO DE PUERTO RICO - 20 AÑOS 20 ÉXITOS
this is an old album from when el gran combo was only 20 years old (they’re now pushing 60, lol). so, 1982. lyrically this is nowhere near the kind of stuff rubén blades put out — but the orchestra is fucking perfection. especially the brass section. oh damn. brass and percussion—so good. this is of course a party album. don’t come here looking for pain and gloom. the opening track is literally about fleeing death and enjoying while you can haa haaa haa. ok. don’t lissen if you don’t wanna. yo... me voy a gozar. |

i’m doing alright. living in the boonies away from all. some of us are hanging to this place like ticks ha ha ha. nearly deserted now but i don’t mind. |

I think INDIE CINDY is better. Really. "Alec Eiffel" is probably in my top 10, maybe even 5, but the rest of the album has left me a bit cold since day 1. Not sure why. Too glossy or something. |
Title track, Alec, Subbacultcha, Letter to Memphis, UMASS... Plenty of great stuff in my opinion. I like it more than Bossanova probably.

Whoah Whoah Whoah. What?! Indy Cindy better than Trompe? Incorrect opinion alert. (“Snob-snob!” snobbened he) |

Looking at the track listings, they're actually about even. So I take it back. Sorry, but there are four or five really good songs on INDIE. Same amount on TROMPE, imho. What's your problem with Indie Cindy? Oh, I see. Needledrop gave it 4/10. That's why you don't like it. Only reason. |
I like Indie Cindy just fine.
|
You do?
I agree with criticisms that it doesn't sound like classic Pixies, but I'm not sure Trompe does either. Actually, maybe better than both is Frank Black's eponymous debut. Recorded at same time as Trompe, right? Damn that's got some good stuff. |
Quote:
Figured me out, ya done did. A guy I openly disagree with about at least half of ALL THINGS doesn’t like that shit half-Pixies album everyone hates, and that’s the reason why I don’t like it. Didn’t even know what Needle Drop was when I formed an opinion on that Steamer. Maybe I just like the actual Pixies? Needle Drop guy bashed MBDTF and Yeeus you silly goose. Silly. |
Quote:
See, the Bush fan likes it. I rest my case. Nice needle *flop* evollvoe. Jk. Love ya both. “Greedy Fly” rawks. I just don’t think of Indy Cindy or that other recent one with the awesome name as being actual Pixies albums. |
It is so weird you said that as I listened to Razorblade Suitcase yesterday. Idgaf that album is great. Albini rules.
Today I listened to Sap. Not really great. Just ok. I don't see how those new ones aren't Pixies albums. Shrug. |
Quote:
No they don't sound like classic Pixies but they sound good for what they are. I like Trompe more than the first FB album but it's close. My fav FB is prob the self titled Catholics album I think. |
Razorblade Suitcase is better than Indie Cindy ha

Trompe Le Monde, for sure. |

I'm like, "What's this?" and punch it into Spotify and saw what it was. I am such an asshole I simply cannot push play for a single song. I like to think I'm pretty openminded, but I guess I have more work to do. To make up for it, here's some interesting Breeders stuff: https://www.premierguitar.com/articl...n-the-breeders |
Evol, just listen to "Personal Halloway". Pretend it's a band you never heard of that Albini produced.
|
been listening to Subaeris albums. spacing out.

I feel like we're an inch away from discussing the musical merits of "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" and "Gangnam Style". |
Seriously dude? Even if you hate Bush you think an album produced by Steve Albini is akin to that bullshit? Stop it.
|
Quote:
DUDE, I'm pretty sure ALBINI thinks the album is bullshit. |
Quote:
Not an argument. Albini thinks Surfer Rosa is bullshit. And counterpoint: Albini recording something doesn’t make it good. Razorbladr Suitcase is not good, but “Greedy Fly” is on my “I’m bored and wanna listen to ‘90s rawk” playlist with other stuff I kinda like but don’t really like. |

Oh fuck off already WHO CARES, the thing's a piece of shit. ART MATTERS for Chrissakes... |
Quote:
He actually said he enjoyed making it. Shrug. I'm not saying he makes it good. But his sound is great. I don't care what you guys think. I like that album a lot. |
Quote:
Done. It's alright. It's not utter shit. There are some novel touches that keep it from being too generic. Hate the singer's voice. It's very fake, full of affectations. Lyrics aren't bad. I like the overall sound. Not too slick. Yeah, that's the Albini bass/drum sound we all know and sometimes love. But I have no memories/nostalgia associated with the song/band, so it's just a song to me. I don't see myself investigating further. It doesn't help that when I type "bush" into search bar, KATE BUSH is the second result. An okay grunge song vs a music master. It would be difficult for anyone to look their best in her company. |
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to make such a thoughtful post.
|
I ignore all the "bush" bands
The Bush Tetras Bush Kate Bush all that boring shit |
BTW, art does matter, and satire is art, and Gangam Style is making fun of a certain breed of rich entitled asshole that comes from Gangam area in Seoul Korea, and it is fun as fuck and the video is genius and he is having a great time and good for him getting a music career going while being a fat, non-androgenous waif.
|
Art does matter. And all art hits us differently. I don't know why it's important to some folks that their preferred art is Good and art they don't like is Bad.
I recently went to a museum. Disclaimer I don't know much about painting. Three different painttings I liked turned out to be Whistler. This was blind taste test right? Just the paintings I happened to like. So that's it, my eyes/brain/heart liked how those looked. It's not right or wrong. I like Razorblade Suitcase. Ears/brain/heart. Nobody else has to. But there's no right or wrong here. |
I like late night infomercials.
|
“Swallowed” is OK too. I’d take that over all those Californicaion RHCP singles any goddamn day.
|
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven- Goodspeed You! Black Emperor
I still need to give their last two albums decent listens, but this one, FAO Infinity (I know that's wrong, but you know which one I mean) and Yanqui U.X.O. are all so great. Not to mention Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada. |
Quote:
Last two don’t really stack up in my opinion. |
