this is an old album from when el gran combo was only 20 years old (they’re now pushing 60, lol). so, 1982.

lyrically this is nowhere near the kind of stuff rubén blades put out — but the orchestra is fucking perfection. especially the brass section. oh damn. brass and percussion—so good.

this is of course a party album. don’t come here looking for pain and gloom. the opening track is literally about fleeing death and enjoying while you can haa haaa haa.

I think INDIE CINDY is better. Really. "Alec Eiffel" is probably in my top 10, maybe even 5, but the rest of the album has left me a bit cold since day 1. Not sure why. Too glossy or something.

Title track, Alec, Subbacultcha, Letter to Memphis, UMASS... Plenty of great stuff in my opinion. I like it more than Bossanova probably.

I agree with criticisms that it doesn't sound like classic Pixies, but I'm not sure Trompe does either.

Actually, maybe better than both is Frank Black's eponymous debut. Recorded at same time as Trompe, right? Damn that's got some good stuff.

Figured me out, ya done did. A guy I openly disagree with about at least half of ALL THINGS doesn’t like that shit half-Pixies album everyone hates, and that’s the reason why I don’t like it.

No they don't sound like classic Pixies but they sound good for what they are.

I like Trompe more than the first FB album but it's close. My fav FB is prob the self titled Catholics album I think.

It's alright. It's not utter shit. There are some novel touches that keep it from being too generic. Hate the singer's voice. It's very fake, full of affectations. Lyrics aren't bad. I like the overall sound. Not too slick. Yeah, that's the Albini bass/drum sound we all know and sometimes love.

But I have no memories/nostalgia associated with the song/band, so it's just a song to me. I don't see myself investigating further.

It doesn't help that when I type "bush" into search bar, KATE BUSH is the second result. An okay grunge song vs a music master. It would be difficult for anyone to look their best in her company.

BTW, art does matter, and satire is art, and Gangam Style is making fun of a certain breed of rich entitled asshole that comes from Gangam area in Seoul Korea, and it is fun as fuck and the video is genius and he is having a great time and good for him getting a music career going while being a fat, non-androgenous waif.

Art does matter. And all art hits us differently. I don't know why it's important to some folks that their preferred art is Good and art they don't like is Bad.

I recently went to a museum. Disclaimer I don't know much about painting. Three different painttings I liked turned out to be Whistler. This was blind taste test right? Just the paintings I happened to like. So that's it, my eyes/brain/heart liked how those looked. It's not right or wrong.

I like Razorblade Suitcase. Ears/brain/heart. Nobody else has to. But there's no right or wrong here.

Last two don’t really stack up in my opinion.
