Sonic Life w/ DJ RXTT

tesla69 10.03.2017 04:31 PM

I loved doing the oldies show on WRUV in the 90's- they defined it as anything more than 25 years, so I generally went for the heavy psych.

Is this a paid gig, Rob?

Rob Instigator 10.03.2017 04:38 PM

It is a former AM community station that got licensed to broadcast on FM. I am prepping packets and looking for sponsors for station, local businesses and such. I would make $$ from commission of sales, but right now doing it for fun and beacause I have always dreamed of beinga radio DJ. I play tunes from 1951-1992.

Listen online anywhere in the world, or outer space, at
96oldies.com or through the TuneIn app, look for 96 Oldies Sugar Land TX.

Bytor Peltor 10.07.2017 10:02 AM

This is welcomed news!

Exactly what is, "Positive Radio Frequency?"
The station only plays music with a positive message?

Is the playlist 100% yours? Are you playing songs stored in a system / computer or are you inserting CD's and pressing play? Could you play, "Ladies Nite In Buffalo" if you wanted?

I enjoyed the show!

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 08:43 AM

the station was RADIO Positiva (spanish music) and the guy has not yet re-branded.

The playlist is 100% me. I pick the 3 hours, and play what I want, as long as it is older than 25 years, suitable for weekend morning radio in a suburban area, but the format he has chosen is purely chronological. a fifties song, then a sixties, then a seventies, etc. I go up and down, from 50's to 1992 then back down and then back up.

that way I can play litle richard , creedence, the chi lites, talking heads, depeche mode, and back down the decades to the 50's. a big mix em up. I like to track the playlist so that similar vibe songs play after each other and it is not too schizo....at least I hope.

I can bring files with me, or use his files, or actually search online and play the HQ track off youtube. no turntables though.

I have some experience in radio but it was college and it was turntables and we had an engineers. this is all me, manning the board and the mic and the tracks.... fun as fuck.

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 08:44 AM

other than me, and a DJ that comes in to do evenings during week, they do not have a full staff, so the songs come off of a database he has and a program that keeps playing tunes and ads....most stations do this until they finalize a lineup

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 08:57 AM

since the station has no sponsorships yet i dont have to read ad copy or play ads, so I manage to get in about 50-52 songs in 3 hours.

TheMadcapLaughs 10.10.2017 08:58 AM

Haven't been on in awhile but congrats Rob, that sound rad!

I noticed and you did a great job at this. I didn't write anything down (I sometimes geek like that), but I recall you playing: Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin and Kansas - Dust In The Wind back-2-back. Each song has orchestral moments and they really complimented each other! Same for when you played, Glen Campbell......really enjoyed that mellow set!

I was most surprised (in a good way) to hear: Neil Young, The Stooges and The Church.

YES - it's more of an album track......could it be considered Saturday morning worthy?

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 01:42 PM

I will start taking requests in hours 1 and 2 and see if I can fit them in on hour 3.

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 01:55 PM

that's the setlist for this past Saturday's show.

I am aiming to not repeat any songs in any given month, and to limit the repeat play of the same bands. some bands are HUGE so they have a large discography and may pop up more often, but I try to keep those to my personal faves.

That way people know they will not hear the same music as last week or the next week.

This is an odd yet intriguing format to build a station around. If the lister doesn't care for a particular song / time frame, all they must endure is the one song and then you are moving on.

How is the FM signal? Sugerland only or can people in Katy or Westhimer / 610 area tune in as well?

Rob Instigator 10.10.2017 03:34 PM

from what I have gotten feedback on, the signal is strong in Ft. Bend Co., all the way to Katy, Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Alief, and even Spring Branch. However, On the center and east side of Houston, 96.1 is KTRU's new station, and so the stations bleed into each other somewhere around mid-west Houston.

Bytor Peltor 10.10.2017 08:29 PM

I wasn't aware KTRU (Rice station) was broadcasting again on the FM dial. Thanks for the heads up!

Rob Instigator 10.11.2017 08:22 AM

you should be able to pick up KTRU where you at on FM

Rob Instigator 10.13.2017 09:04 AM

Bytor Peltor 10.13.2017 03:34 PM

LOVE IT!!!! If awake tomorrow morning, I'll be tuned in.

Came in on I-10 East, hooked a right on Beltway 8 around to Hardy Toll Road out to The Woodlands yesterday to see our daughters high school band perfoorm at the football game. 96.1 was pure static. Buzz 94.5 Mix 96.5 and Country Classics 97.1 were coming in loud and clear, but not 96.1 ;(

Rob Instigator 10.13.2017 03:35 PM

KTRU must be having some issues.
