Elliot Smith or Sufjan Stevens

Elliot Smith or Sufjan Stevens

Simple thread. Make yr choice, & post an explanation behind yr choice.

Savage Clone 07.05.2017 07:01 PM

They are both terrible. This is self explanatory and made clear by way of their terrible, terrible music. Gun to the head, Smith is better for being just ever so slightly less vapid.

Edit: seeing this Indoor Scarf Guy music being discussed on this once great forum makes me pretty depressed. More than usual, I mean.

YOUVE BEEN WATCHING DOCTOR WHO AND NOT TELLING ME?

Also... lol at what you did there ^

!@#$%! 07.05.2017 10:01 PM

yeah they have bunches on amazon.

i can't get any kind of continuity on earlier episodes. you know the clunky ones with the carboard box aliens they used to rerun on pbs in the 90s.

so i've started with this reboot. the ones with brona croft in it.

there's a chained up dalek in a utah basement right now.

marleypumpkin 07.05.2017 11:35 PM

For fucks sake you straight up attack me for posting something you don't like, which in no way takes anything away from you that you might feel for any given topic. & you say that I make this forum terrible to be on.

There's plenty of people on this forum who appreciate both of their main style of songwriting. Which in turn made me think it would be interesting to talk about music.

Savage Clone 07.06.2017 03:51 AM

I didn't mean it as a personal attack. If it came off as such (and rereading it I see how it could), I apologize.

I have been overexposed to this stuff on public radio during work lately and used overly strong language up there. I have certainly seen Smith discussed here in the past on occasion.

(And it is indeed poor form to go predictably negative in my first post here in a long time.)

I vote for neither. I'd rather listen to Neil Young.

aaaand you fell for it.

of course you're predictably negative. you hate most things. but that has nothing to do with his fake tears.

the funny part is that both of you suddenly came out of the depths of time to have that exchange.

but then it stopped being funny. "personally attacked me". what a drama queen. someone please make that thing go away.

Savage Clone 07.06.2017 08:41 AM

I suppose there was an element of falling for it, yes. Still doesn't change the fact that I didn't really need to enter thread just to rip on it. Especially when I came back here to see what was up because I miss being here sometimes. Ah well.

noisereductions 07.06.2017 09:07 AM

serious answer: There are Elliott Smith albums that I love (Either/Or, XO, Figure 8). And I've never been able to listen to a Sufjan album from beginning to end. So there you go.

!@#$%! 07.06.2017 09:07 AM

you should be here more often and criticize our bad taste

it's salutary and all

and the fact that you entered a thread just to rip on the shitty music was funny

especially after so many years

i mean, if something is gonna get you going, terrible music is it

Oh dude. Keep watching. You're in the absolute worst season of the reboot. Things only get better at the end of the season you're on, and then continue to get increasingly awesome until... well, ymmv, but for my money it's still going strong.

And continuity was not really part of the initial run. Not *really.* Whereas the reboot gets increasingly more "arc" oriented with each season.

Stick with it... you will soon meet one of my favorite television characters in history in David Tennant's 10th Doctor. :D

Hey man, don't worry. I don't think it was personal. When you open up a discussion like this (which should maybe be in Non-Sonic Sounds), you should expect some people to respond with negative remarks, because it's an opinion-based thing and you're asking what people like and saying, "This is what I like."
So to a certain extent, the "They both suck" stuff should be expected. But again I don't think it was personal.

NOW, as for me... I don't actually fucking know. :(
My gut just wants to say Lou Reed, but that's because he's just this huge personality for me, and one of my favorite artists ever, and fronted one of my favorite bands ever.

But is he my favorite songwriter? Hmm. Probably not actually.
And is he my favorite guitarist? No. Certainly not. That would be a really weird choice.

So I'll have to think about it and get back to you.

Favorite guitarist and favorite songwriter are gonna be two different people though, certainly. I don't see these things as being one and the same. Lots of good songwriters don't play guitar, or suck at it.

Hmmmm

noisereductions 07.06.2017 10:09 AM

oh, I misunderstood the original post. You're asking us to NAME the person we choose. I thought you were asking us to choose between Smith and Sufjan.

Rob Instigator 07.06.2017 10:18 AM

My fave singer songwriter is Neil Young. I love his lyrics, how he manages to capture so much with so little. I love how his voic goes from cracked falsetto to deep growl to low bluesy.

I love how Neil plays acoustic guitar, so delicate, so amazing, and then he plays electric guitar, and it is like hearing Hephaestus striking white hot steel against his anvil of the gods.....
Here are my top ten Neil Young tracks performed live, both acoustic and electric. https://rxttfaves.blogspot.com/2017/...ng-tracks.html

(I too misunderstood the thread, thinking it asked us to choose between sufjan and elliott)

noisereductions 07.06.2017 10:19 AM

wait what? Rob likes something acoustic? This doesn't make sense.
