1, 2, 3, 4 can be so bland. What ways have people started out sounds live that you've really liked?

Many Ramones songs start out "wu'whofreefore!"
(har-har-har)

At the Drive-In's Enfilade has the kidnapper "hyena" (Iggy Pop!) dialogue. "H-hello?..."
"hello. I have yr cub... [...]"

A good few Refused songs from The Shape Of Punk to Come start out with cool speechs and things.

Thee Silver Mountain Reveries' (SMZ... alter-form) More Action! Less Tears!
starts out with a cool little spoken/yelled part.
"Hellllooo? Heeellooo? There wil*mess up**laugh* Hellllooo!? Heeellllllo! There will beee a meeting of the action committee in fiiiiive minutes! The name of this song is! More Action! The name of this song is! Less Tears! The name of this song is, One-two-three-four!" *song starts now*

"I'll sew your asshole up and keep feeding you and feeding you and feeding you and feeding you"-Method Man

When playing string quartets, I used to have to start us of sometimes, when I had the lead in movement - I would make eye contact with everyone and then slightly give the downbeat with my body followed by a quick breath and motion upward that was the upbeat. That should be enough to give the tempo. Very similar to a conductor.

fugazifan 02.23.2007 08:10 PM

1 2 3 4 5 6....... roasd runner road runner....
the cool groans at the begginning of cannonball by the breeders...

feel the rath, of my bombast (the fall)

12XU

i like how poly styrene starts each song on x ray spex's germ free adolecence by houting thename of the song (ie, "some people say little girls should be seen but not heard, oh bondage up yours!," or "my mind is a plastic bag....")

drrrtyboots 02.23.2007 08:28 PM

Any song intro by Warren Ellis of the Dirty Three. Just listen to a live recording of them and you'll understand.

Jerry was a Racecar Driver by Primus

Sonic Youth 37 02.23.2007 10:18 PM

I love how Karen O of the YYYs segues into "Our Time" by rambling on about something, spelling or whatever and then finally yells out "I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", that being the first word of the song.

ZEROpumpkins 02.23.2007 10:35 PM

Sludgefeast. Like right after Kracked has finished, this feedback comes in, it's just so awesome. Buzzo will know what I mean.

I like how Wire introduce it.

"Alright. . . this is. . . a game. . . and it's called. . . 12xu!"

porkmarras 02.24.2007 03:55 PM

The way Mogwai's 'Summer' starts on the 7'' and Ten Rapid version is the first one that i've thought of.

nicfit 02.24.2007 03:59 PM

You feeling romantic, pork?
I love the way Death Valley 69 starts
The faint's "desperate guys"
EITS "first breath after coma"
G'N'R "don't damn me"

dunno, I'm tired don't want to think.

No Star 02.24.2007 08:30 PM

i love how pavement start the songs on crooked rain with like bits of talking and whirring tape machines etc, i hate the way the fucking ramones shout 1 2 3 4 every god damn time they jump into a break neck D major based riff.
