Classic Albums #10: Can's Ege Bamyasi

I don't know why I chose this over the more obvious Tago Mago, but anyway.

Because the 'classic albums' thing has turned into a bit of a 'my favourite album' monster it'd be nice to get back to reality for a while.

Anyway, Ege is one of those albums that i think has a genuine place at the high table. An amazing band, playing music that only they seemed capable of creating.

agreed, i still need to own it, though.

why didn't can reissue their shit on vinyl too?

demonrail666 07.02.2007 04:09 PM

Yeah, it does seem weird that they never did vinyl reissues.

Savage Clone 07.02.2007 04:10 PM

A masterpiece for sure. Hard to choose between at least four or five Can LPs for "classic" status for me. Intuitive, influential, forward-thinking, and extremely well-executed. Jaki Liebezeit's drumming on this record is pretty damn incredible.

They reissued all that stuff on heavy vinyl.

Wow, it must've sold out pretty damn quick then. lol

Everyneurotic 07.02.2007 04:18 PM

i hope they are not entirely sold out!

Savage Clone 07.02.2007 04:21 PM

It was late 90s, maybe VERY early 2000s on Spoon records. Probably gone now. I have seen a possibly-not-legit but exact vinyl reissue of "Soundtracks" recently though. It wasn't even expensive.

demonrail666 07.02.2007 04:21 PM

One of the things I love about this album is the way that all of the instruments - including vocals - fuse together into a single organic whole.

Savage Clone 07.02.2007 04:29 PM

Oh, and one fun thing to do if you do have the vinyl...
If you play "Pinch" at 45 RPM, it sounds like a pretty good breakbeat/drum-n-bass tune until the vocals kick in.

demonrail666 07.02.2007 04:41 PM

A lot of people making Drum and Bass have used that break.

Savage Clone 07.02.2007 04:43 PM

Huh.
Makes sense I guess.

demonrail666 07.02.2007 04:48 PM

Those early albums anticipated more of how music would develop than almost anything else I can think of. What's more, they actually sound like they could've been made today, or even tomorrow. That's something that not even the Beatles or the Velvets, or even Kraftwerk, could claim.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 07.02.2007 05:06 PM

love this album, but why didnt you keep all the albums in one "classic albums" thread?

Torn Curtain 07.02.2007 05:42 PM

I prefer Tago Mago and Future Days (but I listened to those records more than Ege Bamyasi).

Well this is the last one I'm gonna do. The whole thing seemed to get a bit silly. If anyone else wants to do them though, cool.

At least with Ege I know i'm going out with a bang!

atsonicpark 07.02.2007 09:45 PM

yeah, i way prefer tago mago, and i may actually prefer future days to either of these. but all the early can stuff is great.

they were really doing something amazing on this release.. how much of it was improvised?

can can can can.

What? Is my LP made out of tar or something then?

My fave store has LP copies of Ege, Monster Movie, and one other regularly in stock on vinyl. They're expensive though. 20 to 25 bucks each. The manager says he has seen Tago on vinyl but it's more than 30 bucks retail, so he refuses to stock it. I think they're United Artist European imports.

My Ege is clear green vinyl, by the way.
