The Fall - discography in The Wire April 2006 edition

For those who are interested, there is a fairly decent, although selective, annotated discography of The Fall in April 2006's edition of The Wire.

There are also six different reviews of SY-related releases.

Hip Priest 03.23.2006 06:47 AM

Thanks dude, you've just reminded me to go and buy it. I also belieev there's something all related in this months Q, too, but I'd be too embarrased to buy it.

jon boy 03.23.2006 06:57 AM

ha ha yes q is pretty embarrasing. maybe you could put it in between the pages of the guardian or some such other high brow reading material and only show it to the person you are buying from.

or get someone to buy it for you.

sonicl 03.23.2006 07:00 AM

Put it between the pages of a copy of Nuts, or Knave. Even porn's got to be less embaressing that Q

Or maybe you could do a deal with one of those kids that hang around off-licences asking you to go in and get beer or fags for them.

the ikara cult 03.23.2006 08:23 AM

im going to see the fall tonight, lets hope they do a decent amount of time on stage.

sonicl 03.23.2006 08:27 AM

Is that part of their residency at some club in Croydon? I was tempted by that. I think Gallon Drunk are supporting one night, and I fancied seeing them too, but for me to get round to Croydon is a real pig of a journey.

sonicl 03.23.2006 08:31 AM

Hang on, no, it's Reading! Now that's more tempting. But are they likely to be worth 15 quid of my money?

toxic johnny 03.23.2006 08:46 AM

If you go let us know how the gig went... I would say that they are worth £15.00... I recently bought the 'Fall Heads Roll' on sumptuous marbled double vinyl after jamming it on mp3's for months and I still can't get enough.

soapbars 03.23.2006 11:33 AM

ive seen the fall 3 times and paid around £16 for each gig, worth every penny,

youd regret not going if you dont,

_slavo_ 03.23.2006 11:43 AM

Oh yes, discography of The Fall, I'm into it!!!
Can't wait to get mine by post.

At this stage in the proceedings, I should perhaps point out that there is a quite superb Fall discography online. It's right here, and if you go to the singles section and then to Hit The North, the scan of the cassette single cover is my scan!!!!!!!!! The cassette single has version 4, which is awesome.

Also, let me say that the Q Magazine article is about the years at Beggars Banquet only. The Wire article is getting much more praise.

As much as I like (but not love) The Fall, the most surprising fact to come from this thread so far is the news that Gallon Drunk are still going. Surely this can't be the case?

sonicl 03.24.2006 02:01 AM

The Gallon Drunk support slot was announced on the Nick Cave website. James Johnstone now has a band called Bender (hopefully named after the robot in Futurama?) so I guess that the Gallon Drunk show was a one-off.
([EDIT] I just checked the NC site, and, yes, it was a one-off.)

I lost contact with The Fall when MES started sacking the entire band halfway through concerts. I really ought to reacquaint myself.

You ought to. Apart fom the trundling monster that is the Peel box set, 00's have been a top decade for Fallgruppe. The Unutterable, Real New Fall LP and Fall heads Roll are great.

Also, the somewhat derided Rude (All The Time) and Interim have some good stuff on. The latter has Sparta FC No3, the definitive version of a great recent song.

Glice 03.24.2006 06:05 AM

I would say their last bad album (with the possible exception of panda, pander, panzer) was middle class revolt. But The real New Fall LP, Levitate , the unutterable and the Marshall Suite are up there with their best; some days I think they're even better than that.

I don't think they've done a bad LP ever, but Middle Class Revolt is the last dissappointing one, certainly. Strange, because hat peiod was strong.

Panda... isn't really a Fall LP, in my opinion it's MES doing somehing solo. It was okay though, I thought.

The Unutterable is a good one indeed - Cyber Insekt is a splendid opening track.

Th recent reissues have been nice, especialy The Infotainment Scan and Cerebral Caustic in particular.

Glice 03.24.2006 07:55 AM

Yeah... I'm still a few LPs short of a complete collection of studio albums.

I still think Levitate is my favourite thing they've done... mainly because it was the first thing I bought as a 14 year old indie kid. Didn't make the slightest bit of sense at the time, and not much changes. I often think are you are missing winner gets neglected... the production is ropey as, but there's some mighty strange songs on there. The acute, sometimes, is my favourite Fall song.

I quite like post-nearly man, but panda... didn't really catch me for some reason.

I think Middle Class Revolt was good... it's just a shame that the songs sound better elsewhere - particularly the Peel session version of M5.

Gah. I could rave about latter period Fall for ages.

the ikara cult 03.24.2006 10:27 AM

it was a great gig, well worth the money and travel, the oldest song they played was touch sensitive, and they did sparta F.C and Mountain energei from the real new fall lp, everything else was from Fall heads roll. Best thing was they didnt do any of the slightly iffy songs from FHR of which there are one or 2.
theyre reissuing everything at the minute, its getting mad. AND Les Savy Fav's first album is getting reissued soon. AND all the sonic youth stuff in the next few weeks! Im going to be so poor.... oh wait i already am.

The Fall reissues are cool, because you get a packed extra disc at no extra cost. In fact, in HMV, the very fine Cerebral Caustic reissue cost me £7.99!
