"Incinerate" should be this summer's "Hey Ya"

It deserves to be a huge radio hit, but I'm sure it won't happen. Although SY is my favorite band ever, I would rarely say this about one of their songs. Their music is not for everyone.

But Incinerate is different. It's that rare song that is really, really good, yet has broad pop appeal (At least I think it does. Who knows?) It's got a very catchy hook, and a happy, upbeat feel, despite lyrics about ripping someone's heart out. That's what made the Beatles so great. Their songs were amazing, yet they could be enjoyed by everyone.

(And yes, I know I'm about to get killed for comparing Incinerate to Hey Ya, but Hey Ya is awesome!)

val-holla-ing 07.06.2006 10:49 AM

'hey ya' is good and 'incinerate' is good, but 'incinerate' is a bit too long to get much pop radio play (even though it's a good pop song). not to mention, they lyrics aren't "baby baby oh baby, you hurt me, baby oh baby" or something to that effect.

porkmarras 07.06.2006 10:52 AM

Erm......i'm afraid but we are talking serious bollocks here.Hey ya is possibly the greatest pop song to come out in the last 600000 years, before even ants had a life on this planet.

fluxequalsrad 07.06.2006 11:03 AM

hey ya sucks ass

For today's pop standards, I don't think that matters. Consider the lyrics of "Feelgood, Inc." by Gorillaz, for example. What's that song about?

I've given this some thought, and now I offer this rebuttal: You smell

val-holla-ing 07.06.2006 11:07 AM

...feeling good? which isn't a far cry from the "baby baby baby"ness of most other pop.

If you forget the title and just listen to the lyrics, I don't think that's what comes across. At least not in any obvious way. In fact, "Windmill, windmill" is about the only memorable lyric. Despite that, the song was a big hit.

val-holla-ing 07.06.2006 11:14 AM

i don't know...the loop of damon albarn in the back yelping "shake it, shake it...feel good!" makes me think otherwise.

Magic Wheel Memory 07.06.2006 11:21 AM

OK, you have a point. I never realized that he was saying "feel good," but I just listened to it again, and now it seems so obvious!

Did anyone read the Wire interview? Thurston says they deliberately made a pop album with RR. They wanted to do what Blondie tried to do with Parallel Lines, make an album that crossed over into mainstream, but they wanted to do it right, he says, whatever that means. It's a bunch of bullshit, as is almost everything in pop culture, but I thought it was interesting and amusing bullshit, at least.

val-holla-ing 07.06.2006 11:31 AM

i read that interview and i see where he's coming from.

Rob Instigator 07.06.2006 11:33 AM

where does Oukast sing "baby baby baby baby" in hey ya?

_slavo_ 07.06.2006 11:39 AM

it's almost inaudible, but around 2:30 it's there

val-holla-ing 07.06.2006 11:52 AM

if you hadn't noticed, 'hey ya' is a bit of an anomaly.

and it is in there, just like slavo said. it's just played backwards and drenched in reverb.

_slavo_ 07.06.2006 12:06 PM

and it includes evil spells by mr. LaVey

I totally agree about 'Incinerate'.....best POP song I've heard in memory....I'm serious....I think it's PERFECT POP.....I don't feel the sellout at all...I'm glad they did it, to say the least. Maybe the hookiest POP since the Beatles, IMHO.......har har har har........(ooops...I see where the Beatles have already been referenced, oh well, glad to know I'm not the only crazy one !)

Something has struck me about it.....I know some would think it crazy to mention it this way.....I've become a fanboy.....thrash me...kick me...I'm good.

krastian 07.06.2006 03:13 PM

I like Ms. Jackson better....I think that's their best single.

Rob Instigator 07.06.2006 03:19 PM

Outkasts best song is BOB, Bombs Over Baghdad) that shit kills anything in it's path. it is beautiful, complex, fast, long, and insane.
