Metal Box book

Anyone ever read this? I ordered it bc i have been completely fascinated with early PIL for a long time and there is very little in the way of history about it.

I was a little let down by the book, I think because I really wanted MORE! The same way I feel about 2nd Edition. So I bought the Death Disco extended 12".

PAULYBEE2656 05.04.2009 02:20 PM

I love Metal Box. The cover art could not be more genius.

ricechex 05.04.2009 02:36 PM

i found this. hit the drop down there's some good info in there, esp about the original metal box itself.

I've always been fond of that one actually.

I guess i was half joking, but i only really remembered a few of the tracks as being anything of merit.. Track 8, Under the House, and Banging the Door...that is until i put in on again recently. It works as a whole album to me more now. Back then you could put Lydon in any format and that basically made it. I'm sure he would agree.

I can see that...it took me a while to get into it too. I've got an original copy of it on vinyl...I love the cover art so much.

batreleaser 05.05.2009 10:16 AM

first edition is rad too, ill put that on now.

i hav the vinyl that comes literally in this big metal box thingy. it was 40 bucks, but worth it.

Its never been confirmed to me that Metal Box is a different mix than Second Edition - or maybe there are some demos?

Has anyone ever heard Wobble's Blueberry Hill album? Supposedly Wobble took ('stole' if you listen to Levine) a bunch of the bass lines he had worked up for PiL for his own album. Wobble's upcoming biography could be interesting. I didn't follow his post-PiL music much because I bought that Human Condition cassette that came out after he left PiL and it didn't have the same kick. And hardcore punk took a lot of my attention.

I don't think there's a different mix between Metal Box and Second Edition. I think i had heard that too. I'm wondering if that's just rumor based on other similar things going on with them, like Commerical Zone, in which Levine took an albums worth of material after Second Edition that was a diff version than "This is What You Want". And then you had the Wobble album you spoke of. I have a few versions of Second Edition. Vinyl, 2 copies of the cd, and Metal Box and they sound the same. BUT the Metal Box canister reissue thing sounds utterly fantastic due to fine remastering. Don't know if they're still producing em', but I HIGHLY recommend it.

How we made: Jah Wobble and Keith Levene on Public Image Ltd's Metal Box
'The album was created with no talking. It's telepathy – Wobble and me just have that'

an article in the Guardian from this Monday

(promo for London club date in March at the end)

CHOUT posted about the book too

but placing this post here...

picked up the LP reissue of Metal Box on the 4MenwithBeards label a few years ago. only wish I'd been smart enough to grab the original thing when it came out. From what I've heard 4Men did a faithful job of recreating Metal Box.

I remember seeing it when it first came out and thinking it was interesting but I have no idea why I never picked it up. Probably too much under the influence of my Stones phase.

This myspace page has a few clips of what Jah and Keith sounded like in 2010 with Nathan from The Sex Pistols Experience on vox.

No, not different mixes. But because the box set is on 45rpm, the sound quality is markedly better.
