Record Store Day 2014 (April 19)

Leaving aside reissues and "First Release" titles that will be more widely available later, I'd have to say my two picks are Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band's Solar Live 11.15.13 and J Spaceman & Kid Millions' Live at La Poisson Lounge. Murphy's Law dictated, of course, that the former should belong to the "Limited Run / Regional Focus Release" category, which means I'll be lucky if I find it on eBay or Discogs as my plastic money dissolves into the ether...

I also wouldn't say no to:

Deerhoof/Ceramic Dog split - Deerhoof & Ceramic Dog
Townes: The Basics - Steve Earle
"Brightside"/"In The Picture" - The Julie Ruin
American Beauty - Bruce Springsteen
The Garden Spot Programs, 1950--Extended Play - Hank Williams

I can't be bothered with RSD this year, it's got too big. I'll wait for the stuff I want to come up on Discogs and then pay over the odds for it.

All great stuff (well, The Cure I don't like, but that's a mighty Dino take :)); I just didn't list them because they're reissues. Not that I haven't bought a billion reissues before, mind you...

I don't believe I see this one on the website's list.

Mine is all This Heat's records but apparently they're all getting the reissue treatment, which is nice. Hopefully Camberwell Now reissues on vinyl will follow.

On vinyl, you mean? I have the 2006 CD reissues of This Heat, Health And Efficiency and Deceit and they sound great. I should've gone straight for the Out Of Cold Storage box though...

By the by, was "Graphic/Varispeed" originally meant to be played at, well, various speeds? On the CD, the track is called "Graphic/Varispeed (45 RPM)". If I extract the audio, does anybody know how to make the file play at 33 RPM? And 78 too, whynot!

chocolate_ladyland 03.30.2014 05:37 PM

Gunna spring for the Die Kreuzen reissue.

I meant on vinyl. I don't really buy cds because they get on the way of my erotic lifestyle. All these reissues are bootlegs and are subpar to the way the band wanted the records to be heard. It's a gay world, I know.

I'm too cool to even know what record store day is.

EVOLghost 04.01.2014 02:35 PM

Japan has some releases I want, so I"ll probably spend friday night saturday morning trying to find some copies of Kyary's Ninjari Bang Bang 7" and Seiko Oomori's pressing of her album.

Rob Instigator 04.01.2014 02:49 PM

Record Store Day is where the consumer gets fooled into over-paying for new "limited release" shit that will be worthless in 6 months.

EVOLghost 04.01.2014 03:04 PM

Kyary's 7" ARE limited release.....they don't release Jpop on vinyl...so that's what I'm savin' up for...that is....if I am able to buy that stuff online....like from the stores, not some jagbag.

Agreed. It's a shit day for music. Occasionally they re-release some great records for the day, obviously, but why beg people to go into record shops if they only want to download mp3s on the internet? Their loss. Musicians should get more precious about their craft and expect to treat some of their own so-called fans with contempt, if necessary. Having 3 fans has never stopped anyone with a bit of talent doing what they like to do, and besides, fans are now the people who often do the most talking about music and reveal themselves to be pretentious bores with a knack for nihilism with no direction or real interest in anything. Just the time it takes to make your own failures as a human being that little more public in the midst of billions of words. Another way to say your taste doesn't appreciate the taste of such and such because you find it distasteful. What a waste of time if that's all there is to you.

Rob Instigator 04.01.2014 03:20 PM

waiting in line at RSD is the worst. At least several years ago I managed to snag an extra copy of Hits r for squares after overpaying for my copy. I sold that shit on the ebay quick fast in a hurry.

The two sonic youth splits, with Jay Reatard, and Beck (the wrong guy died) are fairly boring and I never play them...

I think RSD should focus more on things that are currently out of print. That would be cool, and they do not have to be 180g audiphile vinyl. Just a plain old reissue of the good old shit will do.

Rob Instigator 04.01.2014 03:20 PM

There are so many things out of print and unavailable on illegal downloads.

SonicBebs 04.01.2014 03:21 PM

i don't know, surely it's better to let as many people hear your music as possible?
it shouldn't mean that you stop making the music that you want to make but once you've made it let people have it

I agree, but begging people to buy your records is the worst, if you're in the business of creating music and would like to sell it. It's uncool and ultimately shows you as a music merchant, rather than an artist. Getting your work out there and advertising it's on sale is fine, and it doesn't mean you have to emphasize its limited edition status in order to make it appealing to a potential record-buying public. If one doesn't want to shell out for it, it's obvious they haven't got that much interest in music anyway. Unless you, the artist, make it available for free.

Rob Instigator 04.01.2014 03:38 PM

I just wish it wasn't all treated like we are buying some rare boutique items.

They never list prices until you get to the record store. That Dinosaur/Cure split will likely be $15-$20 for 2 songs, which I already own both versions, original and cover, on vinyl which I found at a record convention for $5 each.

It is a cool idea, and I LOVE record stores, but RSD does not mean people browse the record stores, which is like the whole fucking purpose right? People just buy what they choose off a list, some fuck takes it out of boxes and hands it to you, then you leave after paying at least double what it is worth.. I would say that describes 90% of everyone I see at RSD events.

SonicBebs 04.01.2014 03:41 PM

i liked the idea of it - i dont have a record store near me, not even a chain

but it seems like it's more about rinsing nerds of their money rather than promoting record stores
