Jesus

How many SY songs have the word "Jesus" in the lyric?

Additionally, how many songs contain other religious/spiritual terms?

How many contain religious/spiritual themes?

Double-check your work. No cheating. This will count for 25% of your grade. Due by the end of class on Friday.

Secret Girl: "Must be dead and gone to heaven"

Kotton Krown: "Angels are dreaming of you"

Silver Rocket: "Splice yr halo and take it to a moon"

Starfield Road: "Jesus is screaming your name" (One of my most favorite T lyrics ever).

Androgynous Mind: "Hey sad angel walks and he talks like a girl"
"God is love"
"Hey hey are you gay? Are you God?"
"God is gay, and you were right"
"God said it's alright"

Severian 03.03.2013 03:01 PM

Satan is Boring?
Catholic Block?
Kotton Krown?
Radical adults lick Godhead style?
Snare, Girl (..."guide this child to heaven"...)
Karen Revisited ( she screams religion kills more than it saves you man)
Ineffible Me (for seceral reasons, but here's one:
Reductionist lie
Fundamentalist
Alibi
Hate castrater")
Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit
Schizophrenia (Jesus had a twin.... Come on, you know the rest! Too obvious)
Androgynous Mind

Man. The bitterness over the enforced guilt of catholicism really stuck with Thurston. I can relate.

TheMadcapLaughs 03.03.2013 03:22 PM

"lets go walking on water" "now i feel like satan's daughter"

How are you going to forget Do You Believe in Rapture?

"Burning eyes see Jesus coming
Jesus comes to pave the way"

Interestingly I always felt differently, I wouldn't exactly call it bitter. True, there some glaring criticism, but in truth there is also a fairly obvious spiritual theme across a lot of Sonic Youth's music for many years, as attested by many tunes on this thread. I mean really, are there any outwardly negative songs about faith? I can't recall anything as similar as Subhumans, "No I don't believe in Jesus Christ, my mother died of cancer when I was five.."

Holy shit. Good job everyone. Just remembered another: "Satan's got her tongue."

Man, I should've asked what songs DON'T have a religious/spiritual component.

And yeah, I thought it was cool of Thurston to be so openly religious on "Rapture" and not givin' a fuck.

Well bitter was the wrong word. I had a similar childhood actually, in terms of religion, and I'm not bitter. I'm actually quite sentimental about my religious upbringing, which lasted until my mid teens (when I started listening to... Well, guess who?). I don't think he's bitter.. But I think it's left a permenent impression on him.

Also, I don't think that line in Rapture is necessarily Thurston being openly religious. I think it's more poetic than anything else. He's definitely talking about religious thought, but I don't think he's exactly singing the praises of Christianity. Could be wrong though.

I didn't necessarily think that either, but clearly its not overtly negative either. Music is what the listener makes of it as much as what the artist intends it to be. So if a religious person like myself can find meaning and substance in my life through a few carefully crafted words from Thurston's head, that works for me. Put it this way, whenever I was at a Sonic Youth show and that song came up and that verse was sung, I still chanted a loud chorus of, "JAH, Rastafari!" as if I were at a roots reggae show ;)

Oops, did I forget White Cross? I was thinking "white Cross" but I don't think I actually included it.

Severian 03.04.2013 07:01 AM

Heather Angel.

Severian 03.04.2013 07:02 AM

Heather Angel.
Tuff Gnarl ("Saints preserve us," etc.)

Rob Instigator 03.04.2013 06:33 PM

Yes. White Cross "I cross myself. It doesn't help because I'm not smart enough."
