FROM MATADOR RECORDS 8/13/13:

“A solo record works best when you feel like you’re opening a window into somebody’s life, experiencing the things they’re going through or thinking about, places they’re seeing, through their eyes. At its best, you find a universality in it.”
– Lee Ranaldo

On October 8 (October 7 in the UK and Europe), Matador Records will be releasing ‘Last Night On Earth’, the new album from Lee Ranaldo and The Dust (drummer Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht and bassist Tim Lüntzel). Expanding on the groundwork laid down on 2012′s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’, ‘Last Night’ — while certainly darker in tone & lyrical content than its immediate predecessor, is the sort of dizzying electric guitar clinic that ranks amongst the best from any era. After an exhaustive stretch of domestic and international touring (with more to come — see below) Lee & The Dust have formed a powerhouse unit, and we’re confident the results of these Echo Canyon West sessions will impress & inspire for months to come, if not far longer. Here an initial sample in the album’s “Lecce, Leaving”

PREORDER ‘Last Night On Earth’ on double LP or single CD from the Matador Store
PREORDER ‘Last Night On Earth’ from iTunes

Lee discusses the album with WNYC’s John Schaefer (airs 8/13 @ 9PM EST)

Sounds great!

sirki 08.14.2013 05:18 AM

This sounds really good. Even looking more forward now :)
I noticed that in iTunes you get a bonus track (Late Descent #2 Dusted Mix). Does anyone happen to know if that song will also be available for download with the LP-version? Or that'll be iTunes-only?

Magic Wheel Memory 08.14.2013 07:31 AM

In this album title, does "last" mean "previous" or "final?" Or is it intentionally vague?

Rob Instigator 08.14.2013 08:12 AM

both! This will be awesome

zelocia 08.14.2013 11:14 AM

I love the album color and the band photo. And I cannot wait for The Bell House show.

RanaldoNecro 08.14.2013 06:50 PM

That band photo is amazing. Well done whoever took it...

This is the only information in matador-sites:
LP includes MP3 download coupon.

So there is no tracklist. But I´m quite sure that same song is in that download.

I also like a lot Lee´s new album cover for the same reasons as you. It´s quite a long time anyone has made those "twisted lens" -covers. There is also lots of autumn-feeling & I love autumn.

Mortte Jousimo 08.25.2013 04:12 AM

These are also great.

November 8, Amsterdam:
  • Julia Wolfe Reeling
  • Florent Ghys An Open Cage
  • Christian Marclay Fade to Slide
  • Todd Reynolds Seven Sundays
  • Mira Calix meeting you seemed easy
  • Michael Gordon Gene takes a drink (met film van Bill Morrison)
  • David Lang unused swan
  • Tyondai Braxton Casino Trem
  • Nick Zammuto Real Beauty Turns
  • Lee Ranaldo How Deep Are Rivers
November 9, Antwerpen:
  • Electric Counterpoint (1987) Steve Reich
  • O Shut Your Eyes Against the Wind (2011) Bryce Dessner

And on a sidenote:
Scout Niblett's site lists that she will play together with Lee on 29 November in Rouen, France (as support probably). It's not yet listed on the SY calendar though'nor on the venue's site, so not sure whether it's correct.

The Soup Nazi 08.30.2013 06:33 PM

Does anybody know the status of the "acoustic" album recorded in Spain? September's just around the corner...

Lee is Free 08.30.2013 10:10 PM

let's not forget this one, fr Joni's first album:

Lee is Free 08.30.2013 10:11 PM

or this, AoxoMoxoA back cover by Robt Weir:

syouth69 08.31.2013 10:02 PM

Anyone know if it will be extra tracks in some Japanese/Australian/etc edition?

woofwoof 09.01.2013 06:56 AM

Yeah guys those are all cool examples. Shame Lee's isn't

Courtney Love is in this picture, no?

Mortte Jousimo 09.04.2013 03:47 AM

This is from Wikipedia "Aoxomoxoa" site:
A five-year-old Courtney Love appears on the album's back cover.[

And from this it is taken to Wikipedia:

Comment: I spoke with GRATEFUL DEAD historian DAVID GANS, and was able to
confirm the old rumor that COURTNEY LOVE does in fact appear on the back
cover of the 1969 GRATEFUL DEAD album cover, AOXOMOXOA. She was 5 years
old in the picture. DAVID GANS said: "CCOURTNEY LOVE did in fact appear
on the back cover of AOXOMOXOA as a child. Her father was HANK HARRISON,
one of the band's managers in the early days of the GRATEFUL DEAD."

It is a messageboard, so I don´t know can anyone rely on this...

wills123 09.07.2013 05:22 AM

There are clips on Amazon now - in the UK at least. Sounds great, really looking forward to this now!

RanaldoNecro 09.13.2013 01:46 PM

the album kinda looks like a similar version of adbusters...

This song is about my feelings for Lee, who rules all in the extreme, and is the nicest guy, and will chat with you like he is not some sort of pantheonic rock god, which he IS.

Here's some more ode's to Lee, sort of:

Vic Chesnutt - Splendid
Or check out Archive.org. The live version is even better but not found on youtube in complete form. For instance here
splendid Lee
full of life
wandering the countryside

Bettie Serveert - Love Lee
Pale light is shining in my eyes,
I want everyone to see that it’s Love Lee
Grand Central Station in my mind,
it’s imperative to find that this is me
It’s Love Lee, I love Lee
