Thurston digs Robe.

Cooley, wondering if you saw this.

A third recent cassette on Myasis Tapes is Floods by Robe., an increasingly intriguing duo from Columbus, Indiana. Their name, Robe., always has a period after it—like: Robe. These guys revel in deep-well sonar-death where the skies threaten to break in a rain of shrieking ghoul shred. Wicked from all points of access. These tapes are super limited and deserve to be experienced, as all these outfits represent the crucial excitement alive and rampant in this amazing underworld of sound psychosis. New Swedish cassette label Klorofyll Kassetter has reared its scintillating hoof with a raw magik ritual jammer by Luva, a wide-blue-eyed blonde lad who gets sweet acid rhythms happening to create fresh portals. Lovely junk yes.

From the Thurston/Cooley monthly article in this month's Arthurmag.

Atsonicpark, from now on you are obliged to feel enthusiastic about 'The Eternal' forever, re-think your opinions on 'Rather Ripped', and personally apologise to him for what you did to his poems. Robe is indeed your best music so far. Well done, man.

SYRFox 02.28.2009 11:13 AM

Will Atsonicpark stop liking his own band now that a generation of "people who suck Thurston's tastes" are going to like it??
(just kiddin')

fugazifan 02.28.2009 11:17 AM

way to go!!!

al shabbray 02.28.2009 11:23 AM

I agree to sarramkrop, I enjoyed every single Robe release very very much so far! and the album before the lst one is burned into my mind as the "empty-berlin-soundtrack" like forever, which is still a good thing

batreleaser 02.28.2009 11:27 AM

oh yeah, robe. much better than scissor shock.

nicfit 02.28.2009 11:34 AM

Sasha Grey suggested him to listen to Robe.!

al shabbray 02.28.2009 12:01 PM

^^buahahaha

Derek 02.28.2009 12:01 PM

I like Scissor Shock more...

Actually, he'd get more cred in the noise scene if he got the props from Thurston but proceeded to slag everything Sonic Youth has done since Master Dik. Even better if Ecstatic Peace! puts out a record for them, then he should mock Sonic Youth whenever possible and laugh about taking "the devil's money". Never mind that Robe. aren't noise either, that doesn't matter in the noise scene if you are vocal enough about not liking Sonic Youth.

I have to thank Thurston for getting me straight about the "." though. I've listed them in several playlists without it.

Tokolosh 02.28.2009 12:58 PM

I've only heard hadramaut [phage tapes - 2009] and it's very good.
Thanks again.

Derek 02.28.2009 01:00 PM

while you guys are at it, listen to MY album here: http://www.last.fm/music/UUUUUU/DDD%27DDD

ADAM COOLEY APPROVES!

atsonicpark 02.28.2009 01:36 PM

Hahaha thanks guys, I had seen this but would feel silly mentioning it on here! Even though I do self-promote (a little bit, in every post, at least in my sig), I didn't want to brag or anything!!...

But yeah, I saw that a couple months ago and we are going to continue to send Thurston music as long as he digs what we're doing. Thanks for the support!!

atsonicpark 02.28.2009 01:45 PM

I guess I'll use this opportunity to say.. in a week or two, TIME DILATION by Robe. will be out on Blackest Rainbow Records. Check it out!!

This is funny. You know, she never did wear that Scissor Shock shirt she had me mail her.

As for Thurston, he has a great taste in music. I don't agree with all his musical opinions, but who can I agree with, completely? You know. The dude's heard a lot of shit, and he knows what he's talking about. I question certain bands he likes, I'm not going to name any names, but I am definitely honored that he likes Robe.

As for the new album TIME DILATION, al shabbaray, the version I uploaded actually was a bit incomplete. We finished it a couple days later. Anyway, Blackest Rainbow is releasing that and a new Aidan Baker disc the same day. Another honor, to be working with a label that has released so many great bands. Anyway, it's limited to 200 copies, and personally I think if you're going to get a Robe. album, this is the one to get. It's the darkest, filthiest, and nastiest. It's probably not the best, but whatever. It's very Messiaen-influenced drone.

As for Scissor Shock, I'm working on the final Scissor Shock album, A Shrine to Salvaged Junk, which will be released by Placenta Records when it's done. It's very backwoodsy, kinda like Caroliner or Sun City Girls' "Jack's Creek", lots of finger picking guitars, banjos, and such. There's still some drum machine, but it's not crazy freak out drum machine shit from before.. most of the percussion is home made. Um, I keep telling people it'll be the final album, it probably won't be the LAST EVER but certainly for a while. I've been working on that project for 6 years and quite frankly I've taken it as far as it could go. The whole point was to keep completely reinventing the band with every album. I sorta did that but I dunno. I feel like... Robe. is more important to me, I'm more interested in creating these soundscape droney worlds rather than writing "songs". Don't get me wrong, we still plan out Robe. songs, but Scissor Shock songs are WAY more difficult to write.

Basically, I'm doing a surf band called THE DEATH POWDERS, just some small thing, only two members probably (overdubbed bass), will have samples of that up eventually. But my main gig is Robe., and I'm glad people here are digging it. It's a dream band for me to be in. It's like.. the stuff I've always wanted to make but never had the courage TO make. Because drone, doom, ambient, whatever is so played out. I always felt like.. fuck, I gotta do something really INSANE or no one's going to give a shit. But lately I've felt like, 'Okay, I can let feedback .. uh .. feed back for a few minutes and it might be compelling." So, Robe. is my main musical project.

But I'm also going to start devoting my time to making experimental films. More on that later.

Sorry for typing so much, but I just feel overwhelmed by everyone's love and support.

I never read him saying that he liked Marylin Manson

Derek 03.01.2009 09:00 AM

That's exactly what I thought at first glance. Hahaha.

sarramkrop 03.01.2009 09:02 AM

Scissor Shock are hideous rubbish.

Derek 03.01.2009 09:05 AM

Year of the Lips are hideous rubbish.

Rick Astley are hideous rubbish.

Derek 03.01.2009 09:08 AM

haha... you're the funniest person on here! I mean that!

SYRFox 03.01.2009 09:15 AM

atsonicpark 03.01.2009 09:32 AM

ONE MORE THING, since I am pretty sure there is only a few copies left, if anyone here is into robe. and experimental films, you have to check out FRACTURE. It's a film by me and Kyle, I'm the star and he did most of the directing/all the editing.. very Eraserhead/Begotten/Tetsuo like, set to a 50 minute doom drone soundtrack. Kyle and I, together and separately, are going to make lots of experimental films but yeah. If you look on the internet, you will be able to find a torrent of it. And if you get on soulseek, if kyle ever gets back on, you can download it from Robe Flesh, it's about 700mb. But if you want to order a copy!:

http://www.small-doses.com/doses/39/dosethirtynine.htm

There, done promoting.

Derek 03.01.2009 09:33 AM

What did you use to film and edit the movie?

atsonicpark 03.01.2009 09:35 AM

A $1500 digital video camera stolen from an Army base when Kyle worked there... He put it through a few effects to make it look as non-digital as possible.. I'm not going to reveal his magic secrets, but in all seriousness, it looks a lot better than, say, Inland Empire (filmed on a $2700 DV camera)!!

But for final cutting, he used uhh... final cut pro.

Derek 03.01.2009 09:50 AM

ohhh! I wish I had a $1500 digital video camera hah.

atsonicpark 03.01.2009 09:52 AM

Well, you can watch FRACTURE and film it with your webcam and pretend that it's a $1500 camera.

Honestly, you don't need a $1500 camera. You don't need a $150 camera. You could use the shittiest camera in the world and with some clever editing and enough creativity and spirit, you can make some absolutely genius films. I mean, my favorite director is Giuseppe Andrews, and I have 17 of his movies, and I am pretty sure none of them have any budget, but the dude's a fucking genius so it doesn't matter!

Derek 03.01.2009 09:56 AM

Yeah true. Same with making music haha.

I listened to Time Dilation. Pretty great. I love the guitaring on the second track and the crescendo near the end of the third track. I'll need to listen to it a few more times though of course.

By the way, I uploaded a track I did yesterday onto my myspace, check it out if you have the time!

atsonicpark 03.01.2009 10:20 AM

Thanks, uh.. on that album, tracks 4 and 5 are all me, and Kyle did track 6. But tracks 1-3, we collaborated on, and we did lots of funky shit, he used a church organ, his violin, and other bullshit. Glad you like the guitar, I was in a Fahey mood as usual.

I'm listening to "new tentative track" now... oh, this is excellent. Very lovesliescrushing... is my computer messing up or is there a rhythmic skipping sound every now and then? Sounds fucking great.

Derek 03.01.2009 10:41 AM

there is indeed a skip every now and then aha.

I'm writing an EP right now that might turn into an album... depends how inspired I get hah. I have school exams soon so I need to chill out wth music a tiny bit... but I'll definitely be doing another album later in the year... and this next one I plan on actually getting released and getting reviewed and blah blah blah

batreleaser 03.01.2009 03:40 PM

better not be gay porn set to robe., all though that is a venture that would make sense given your band's sound, haha.

fugazifan 03.01.2009 06:01 PM

this thread reminded me that i havent given hadramaut a good listen in a while. doing that now
its really great.
really!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 03.01.2009 08:42 PM

Are you gonna be too cool for school now?

atsonicpark 03.01.2009 09:03 PM

no. As previously mentioned (or not), my music has been enjoyed by people like sasha grey, alvarius b, the goslings, climax golden twins, our brother the native, uneven universe, warmth, large mound, and countless others for years. I'm still not delusional enough to think that the music I do will ever make me so successful that I can quit my job and do it for a living.
