So Lee is free. And I couldn’t be happier that he chose to bring his newfound freedom to Buenos Aires. I guess the show was similar to what they’ve done in the US or Europe; they played most of the tracks off Between the Times, introduced 3 new songs from the upcoming record (Last Night on Earth, Lecce & Keyhole), Revolution Blues by Neil Young and Thank You for Sending Me an Angel by Talking Heads, and ended the set with Genetic. It was such a treat for me to find out Lee is so talkative on stage! And what he does with the live version of Hammer Blows is just awesome. After the show the whole band went to the merch stall and spent like an hour signing records, tickets and what not, and Lee and Steve just proved once again that they are the coolest nicest guys on the planet. So hats off the Lee & The Dust, may Lee’s beautiful head of white hair keep playing shows like this for many more years… and come back to South America with the new record as he promised.

In Santiago, they did nine songs from Between The Times And The Tides (only "Stranded" wasn't played), four from the upcoming Last Night On Earth ("Key/Hole", "Lecce Leaving", "Home Courts" and the title track) and three covers: "Revolution Blues", "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel" (with its now classic one-two punch segue into "Fire Island (Phases)") and The Byrds'/Crosby's haunting "Everybody's Been Burned". They also played the hell out of "Karenology" during soundcheck, which was mighty bitchen to listen to through the wall!

Now, as for the post-show signing & selling... Yes, the guy is incredibly nice, UNLIKE the goddamn "fans" - pack of selfish rabid critters, man. GIMME GIMME GIMME. Give me your guitar pick, give me your printed setlist, sign my record, sign my ticket stub, sign my t-shirt, sign my dick. DO IT NOW. NOW NOW NOW! Dude, you're in the presence of greatness - how about a little civility you friggin' animals? It is indeed neat to have stuff autographed; I treasure my copy of the now ailing :( Slim Dunlap's The Old New Me, on which he wrote a personalized message, and my, um, Nels Cline Action Figure signed by the one and only Mr. N.C. himself. Usually, though, I prefer to give them, the artist whose work I love, something cool and hopefully unique for them to dig.

On this occasion I scanned a picture of my beloved Sandy Denny and tried to merge it with a pic of Lee so it would look like they were playing together; it wasn't entirely successful (I'm no expert photoshopper), but given the right black & white tone and printed on glossy photo paper it turned out decent, I think. I waited for Lee to come back for the encore to hand it to him (I was on the first row) and at first he didn't know what to make of it:

LR: This is the first time I have my picture taken with [I unfortunately didn't catch the name he mentioned]. No, this isn't [?]; [turns to me] who is this?

TSN: It's Sandy De--

Assclown standing a few rows behind me: PLAY SOME FUCKING SONIC YOUTH! WAAAAHHH!

TSN: [I turn around] SHUT UP!! [Turn back to Lee] It's Sandy Denny.

LR: Sandy Denny, holy SHIT!

Big smile on his face and he thanked me a lot. Absolutely beautiful moment on top of a phenomenally rockin' performance by him and The Dust. Bring on the new album!
