I found my No Fun Fest minidisc boots! TM w Paul Flahrety and KG/DJ O/JOR/IM

2004 or 2005 i think.
Kim's set fucking KILLED. I've been wanting to hear this again ever since but I lost it shortly after.

But I think the minidisc player is broken.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to rip them to pc? I don't want to ship them to someone who has a player and risk losing them.

Maybe i could find one on the cheap? I probably should have checked ebay before starting this thread.

You can probably find a cheap dvd or blu-ray player that has a disc tray. that's what I use to listen to mine.

a blu ray dvd video player that plays audio minidiscs that went extinct in the 90s? weird. how the hell do i even search for one? who would make such a monstrosity?? who has this need???

edit: did some searching... woooo. they are antiques. functioning ones go for hundreds of dollars. i can't find the combo blu ray anywhere on the internet. you must have been joking?

srsly? for hundreds? hold on let me check

edit... well you can find some from sixty up to hundred as well.

minidiscs must be bit tricky. Id say you can read them only via minidisc reader.

that No Fun Fest recordings must be sweet.

check some of my SY related live recordings throughout my minidisc era.

I have ripped mine to .flacs back in the day.

my MZ N707 is retired for a moment, eventhough I like to think I could use it in my live setup sometime.

All the ones I saw on ebay in the 60 range were parts only. That's still more than i was expecting. I should try fixing my old one again. Maybe it just needs a new battery. Damn thing is from singapore though. They got the 24 bit and codec upgrade.

depending on number of discs, why not just extract/convert? as i recall minidisc was a pcm file. just jack to any audio port and blam.

anyway quick search spits out $20/disc price

e.g. http://www.minidisctocd.us/

http://www.mdconvert.com/

but a used player is just fitty dollah...

oh i have way too many to pay per conversion.

I hate bidding on ebay items because 50 dollars sounds fine, but when it goes for 75 to a 150 dollars at the end I feel very annoyed at spending all that time at it. the buy it now's are a good indicator of what the final winning bid will be, in which case, no way it's going for 50 bucks. there are already 5 bidders.

yeah. i wonder why people don’t borrow things more from each other. i mean, you just need the thing temporarily. what ever happened to borrowing tools from your neighbor? now everybody must have one or else there is great shame.

could you put the word out in your circles that you need to borrow a player a bit? then you could buy the person lunch or a nice bottle or something.

otherwise, perhaps freecycle, though it’s a long shot—i’ve been looking at freecycle lately and in my area it’s just a bunch of junk. maybe its heyday has passed.

then again, you could “borrow” from the universe by buying and then reselling after using. no need to hang on to the thing once it served its purpose. you could even maybe profit from it, after all is said and done, even add in some extras (e.g. your clutter becomes “extra accessories”).

anyway if you manage to extract those files i’d love to give them a listen...

When my PlayStation 3 died a year or two ago, I went to Best Buy and found a blu ray player for less than 100 bucks. Just make sure whatever you buy has a tray that you put the disc on and you’re set.

but why add more clutter when you can get rid of it AND keep your music at the same time?

Are you confusing mini cd’s with minidiscs?

I fixed my player!

Good thing too as I realized all the upgrades over regular minidiscs meant a replacement player would have to have been made after 2004 for all the discs to work.

I will start posting as they come.
