The words "please" and "thank you".

There are far too many occasions on this board where someone asks for something and doesn't have the politeness to say please. And quite a few where people don't say thank you.

Could we all remember our manners in future, please? Thank you.

I dont think its really a question of 'please' and 'thank-you'. Politeness comes in many forms. I've tryed explaining to my mum this concept. I tend not to use please and thank-you but I show my appreciation and gratitude in other ways. On the internet it can be expressed by :D :p etc.

My mother often asks me why I dont say hello to my friends. Instead we nod and smile at each other. which to us is a visual form of politeness. The problem comes when the older generation think we are so rude, but we're not its just the way we express things are different to them.

The "hello nod" is great. I use that a lot.
Totally familiar to anyone who tends to socialize/congregate in environments where there is loud music being played and speech is rendered inaudible most of the evening.
I do like to use "Thank You," though.
One of my favorite bands in town is called Thank You as well.

Oi! Less of the "older generation", please! Thank you.

Just because I'm over forty... youngsters today... grumble, grumble...

SynthethicalY 05.21.2007 08:49 AM

I say thank you, but not in this board, sorry about that. And thank you for reading this post.

sonicl 05.21.2007 08:50 AM

You're very welcome.

sarramkrop 05.21.2007 08:51 AM

Politeness is fine for as long as it doesn't sound forced or fake. There's a person where I work who says thank you so much , it comes accross as he doesn't mean it.

SynthethicalY 05.21.2007 08:52 AM

Thank you for your kindness.

sonicl 05.21.2007 08:54 AM

It was no trouble at all.

SynthethicalY 05.21.2007 08:55 AM

No no, thank you, I really mean it. I know how much effort you put into these post, by looking at your replies.

I think Steve Martin sums the subject up best by thanking the crowd for attending and then starts thanking each of them individually.
