The BBC Radiophonic Workshop Thread

I don't think we've had a thread dedicated to the BRW. So anyway, any thoughts or info regarding it or similar workshops?

Have we really not? I'm sure there were Daphne Oram/ Delia Derbyshire ones kicking about.

What I've found with BRW is that I rarely enjoy it as much as I do composerly musique concréte from the same-ish time. It's certainly seminal electronic/ tape music, but apart from the aforementioned Oram/ Derbyshire, very little of it that I've heard is actually much cop.

Yeah there were a few threads looking at specific individuals or albums or programmes but not one just about the BRW in general i don't think.

Either way, I've quite a few compilations but I tend not to take too much notice of who's doing which track. I've been thinking about them a fair bit recently and, while I do think some bits really are amazing, I suppose my fascination with them is as much with the BRW as a concept as it is purely musical. They're like a nationalised Faust.

As well as Oram/Derbyshire, I also love John Baker. Check out the 'John Baker Tapes' that came out a couple of years ago. Rephlex released a great compilation on vinyl a few years ago with some of the workshop's more experimental stuff:

The two volume John Baker Tapes are definitely still available. They were only released a few years ago.

Hello ;-)

Yes, sadly the rephlex one is out of print, it was a limited release, but looking at the tracklist can give people pointers on other stuff worth checking out. Try this one: http://digitalmeltd0wn.blogspot.com/...son-brian.html

Of course the White Noise album is always worth a mention.
